The Biggest Music News Stories Of The Week

Metallica’s ‘Master of Puppets’ earns 400% increase in streams post-‘Stranger Things’

Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” is the latest recipient of the coveted post-“Stranger Things” bump.

According to Billboard, the title track off the metal legends’ 1986 album has seen a 400% increase in streams since it was used in the season four finale of the Netflix sci-fi series.

While that certainly is a major bump, “Master of Puppets” still has a long way to go if it hopes to match the resurgence of Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill,” which soared all the way to the top five of the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 after its use in an earlier episode of “Stranger Things” during the fourth season.

Metallica previously commented on the show’s use of “Master of Puppets,” which is heard during a significant scene involving the Dungeons & Dragons-loving character Eddie Munson, sharing that they were “beyond psyched” about the song’s placement.

“We were all stoked to see the final result and when we did, we were totally blown away,” the band said.

Irv Gotti Sells Murder Inc. Master Recordings In Reported $300 Million Deal

Irv Gotti has sold his stake in Murder Inc’s master recordings in a deal worth a reported $300 million.

Irving Lorenzo founded Murder Inc in 1999 following his success at Def Jam Records. The label helped launch the careers of artists like Ja Rule, Ashanti, Charli Baltimore, and many others. The deal sees Irv Gotti sell a “50% ownership stake of his masters, with additional funding for various film and television projects.”

Gotti sold his stake to Olivier Chastan’s acquisition vehicle, Iconoclast. The Los Angeles-based firm entered the music rights acquisition space in February 2022 following the purchase of Robbie Robertson’s music publishing, name, likeness, and recorded music interests.

YouTube Touts Success Of TikTok Rival, Shorts

In data shared exclusively with Bloomberg, the social media site said artists are using Shorts, its TikTok competitor, to rapidly grow their subscribers. In addition to JVKE, others benefiting from the product include singers Madilyn Bailey, Cooper Alan and Emeline, who increased their subscriber counts by 480,000, 290,000 and 150,000, respectively.

“It is a very important opportunity that both the fans and the artists have,” Lyor Cohen, YouTube’s global head of music, said in an interview.

Cohen is excited about the music industry’s opportunity in the short-form space, though he’s also “deeply concerned” some viewers might only watch short-form content without exploring an artist’s deeper, longer-form work, like music videos and interviews. He called short-form videos that don’t link to long-form content “junk food.”

“I think short-form video could help crowdsource and make it easier for kids to find the soundtrack of their youth, but then you have to be prompted, and it has to lead you [to long-form content], so it’s not empty calories, but it leads you to learning and discovering and becoming a fan,” Cohen said.

Crosby, Stills, & Nash Return to Spotify

Crosby, Stills & Nash music can now be streamed on Spotify once again, five months after David CrosbyGraham Nash and Stephen Stills requested their labels remove their recordings in support of Neil Young‘s decision to leave the streaming service.

Their music is available via Spotify as of Saturday (July 2). CSN will donate proceeds from streams to COVID-19 charities for at least a month, a source tells Billboard.

In February, the band members commented, “We support Neil and we agree with him that there is dangerous disinformation being aired on Spotify’s Joe Rogan podcast. While we always value alternate points of view, knowingly spreading disinformation during this global pandemic has deadly consequences. Until real action is taken to show that a concern for humanity must be balanced with commerce, we don’t want our music — or the music we made together — to be on the same platform.”

How To Make The Industry Care About Your Music [Video]

There are a million songs written about virtually every topic imaginable, so why should anyone care about your music?

Music is all about who you know. If you don’t know anyone, like most people when they start, you better be good at making connections and selling yourself. It doesn’t matter if you’re pitching music or your talent as a professional—nobody will care unless you give them a reason to pay attention. Don’t know how? No worries. I can help.

There are countless ways to gain exposure in 2022, but most will agree that playlists are the primary way people discover new music. Be it through algorithmic selections like those curated by Spotify or the trusted taste of an influencer, placement on the right playlist can change any artist’s career overnight.

But there’s a problem. Everyone who is anyone wants to be on playlists, and that means curators are inundated with requests for inclusion. The big-name talent often has little-to-no problems getting heard, but what about regular musicians? How can up-and-coming talent stand out from the overwhelming amount of competition?

Your story is unique, but you have to know how to sell your story for tastemakers to understand that.

Each day, in offices and remote workspaces around the globe, playlist curators and industry gatekeepers sift through countless songs from artists hoping they’ll give them one of the very limited spaces available on editorial playlists. Certain tastemakers specializing in mood-themed playlists may hear upwards of one hundred or more tracks with a similar theme or story in a single day.

If you want to be the ONE song that stands out from the competition, there are two factors you have to nail:

  1. The song needs to be GOOD. Obviously.
  2. You need to sell the heck out of that song.

Part one is up to you. As for part two:

The only thing separating your story of wanting to leave home and every other dreamer is how you sell it to someone else.

Start by breaking your song down to the simplest description possible.

“My song is about growing up in a small town and waiting to escape.”

Great! We have a relatable perspective that millions, even billions, can easily recognize.

The only problem is—everyone has a song about wanting to leave their hometown.

If you want to attract playlist curators, tastemakers, or anyone, you need to be more specific.

Let’s start with the “why” of it all. WHY do you want to leave your hometown?

“My song is about growing up in a small town and waiting to escape because I have big dreams.”

That’s better. You’ve narrowed the target audience slightly, but you’ve also gotten closer to your true market.

Let’s add another detail, perhaps explore WHAT made us want to leave our hometown. Was it our family, the community, or something more existential? Maybe it’s all three!

“My song is about growing up in a conservative small town and how nobody, not even my family members, can relate to your ambitions of a life outside the village limits.”

The significance of your song and your perspective on life increases exponentially with each detail we add to our story. Those same details attract entertainment gatekeepers and inspire countless passive listeners to seek out more of your music.

With a little effort, our song about growing up in a small town and waiting to escape can be sold as an epic tale of wanderlust and misadventure inspired by unfortunate yet relatable circumstances.

“My song is about growing up in a conservative small town and how nobody, not even my family members, can relate to your ambitions of a life outside the village limits. It’s about taking advantage of the opportunities presented to you and exploring them. Sometimes we will fail, but that’s okay because failure is part of the journey. What’s more important, to me, is that we try in the first place.”

A few things to keep in mind as you develop your selling power:

  1. You are already a storyteller. Your music proves that. Don’t let the lack of music cause you to lose confidence in yourself. The story you are telling is yours (or one you made up). Nobody can sell it better than you.
  2. Storytelling is a skill you never stop developing. It will take time to build great pitches, but it’s worth the effort.
  3. As you refine your story, always look for new angles to promote your single. Maybe the song elicits a very specific feeling or reaction from the listener. If so, there’s probably a playlist for that.
  4. Not all stories are created equal, and the same goes for the recipient. You may need to develop multiple pitches for a single song to maximize its reach.

Playlisting is the way of the future. Taking time out of your schedule now to develop and refine your pitching skills will expedite the promotional process down the line. Best of luck, and if you have any questions, email james@haulix.com for advice.

How A&P Reacts Built A YouTube Empire [VIDEO]

The wildly popular father-son review duo known as A&P Reacts share their secrets to success in an all-new ‘fast five’ interview with Haulix.

If you’ve spent any time on YouTube, you’ve undoubtedly seen the hordes of reaction channels that exist in response to virtually any product or piece of entertainment you can name. Some channels review beauty products, and others cover toys. Some even cover music, which we’re going to talk about today.

Music reaction and reviews channels are, by and large, all the same. From one to five people (or more) gather in front of a camera while enjoying a notable artist’s latest song/video. If it’s a reaction, the people on camera consume the song/video in real-time while capturing their response. Hearing/seeing the music is far less likely if it’s strictly a review, but the commentary remains.

Music Biz is now available on Spotify as a VIDEO PODCAST! Subscribe today.

A short time ago, Pedro Almeida sought a way to connect with his teenage son. A lifelong fan of metal, Pedro believed his son could similarly benefit from the genre, and together the pair launched an unassuming YouTube channel called A&P Reacts. A couple of years and hundreds of heavy metal reviews later, the channel boasts more than 76,000 subscribers and has yet to monetize. For them, it’s all about the music and the togetherness. Everything else is a distant second.

Now, the father-son duo is gearing up for their biggest adventure yet. In the coming month, Pedro and his son will be headed to Iceland to judge a battle of the bands in connection with the Wacken Music Festival. This is the second time the team has traveled internationally because of their channel, and we have a feeling it won’t be the last.

In the latest edition of our ‘Fast Five’ interview series, Music Biz host James Shotwell chats with Pedro Almeida about his channel, its growth, and where he sees reaction channels going in the future. Pedro’s goals for his videos are among the purest we’ve heard, but make no mistake—The Almeidas plan to see how big their channel can become. Check it out:

KNOW YOUR ROLE: The Difference Between Artist Managers, Publicists, and Agents

A great team can take any artist’s career to the next level, but collaboration only works if everyone understands one another’s roles.

Nobody is an island. You think you can make it alone, and you might go pretty far, but everyone that becomes a headliner does so with a team of supportive people at their side.

Artists are no different. A great song and an invigorating live show can put you on the map, but unless you understand every element of a successful music career, you’ll soon find you need help. Which brings us to a very important question: Who do you need, and what can they do to help you?

We speak with musicians weekly who are actively building a team without fully understanding the roles they are trying to fill. Some believe their publicist should develop a great marketing campaign, while others assume their manager can get them on SNL. The artists in both examples ask the wrong person for what they want, which can only lead to frustration and wasted money.

With that in mind, we feel it is important to explain the roles of an artist’s team. That way, you know who you need and what they can do for your career. Check it out:

Publicist

It is a publicist’s job to create and maintain a positive public image for their client. They have connections to local and national media outlets, and they create press releases, urging media coverage for their clients’ work. Most publicists work for a publicity company and handle a number of clients at the same time. Today’s publicists have to be knowledgeable of internet resources as well as standard print and television outlets so that they can best promote their clients to the public.

Job responsibilities of a Publicist include:

  • Preparing information and press kits for the media
  • Handling inquiries from media about their clients
  • Arranging interviews and other press meetings
  • Designing publicity plans for their clients

Manager

Managers handle business and career decisions in collaboration with their clients. They develop overall strategies for clients so that they can plan for a productive and lucrative career. At times, managers negotiate contracts for their clients. They also work to find alternative income sources, such as marketing or promotional tie-ins to the work their clients do.

Job responsibilities of a Manager include:

  • Developing a strong network of contacts within their clients’ industry
  • Scheduling appearances and signings for their clients
  • Building a career-long plan for a client’s career
  • Managing a client’s financial decisions

Agent

The main focus of an agent’s job is representing their clients in negotiations for work. They represent several clients at once and do their best to promote and secure work for them. Most talent agents are bonded and licensed by the state they work in and are limited in what they can do for a client. Agents commonly work for a talent agency.

Job responsibilities of an Agent include:

  • Staying updated on current trends within their clients’ industries
  • Being aware of union, state and industry rules that may affect their clients
  • Collaborating with talent agency executives to develop strategies advantageous to clients
  • Explaining negotiations to clients before and after decisions are made

Surviving The 2021 Music Industry Slowdown

After another wild and unpredictable year, the music industry at large is taking a break, and you know what? You should too. You deserve it.

It’s finally happening. After 12 long months of pandemics, pipeline issues, discovery algorithms, and more social media content than anyone cares to think about, the annual music industry slow down is upon us. For the next three weeks, the best majority of the music industry will be on some form of vacation. As one industry contact put it, “Ask yourself: Is this a December issue, or is it a January email?”

Hopefully, news of the slowdown brings a feeling of relief. But we know that’s not the case. You still have things to accomplish! Other people may be taking a break, but you have something to do! Your to-do list is long, and you will finish it before the holidays. At least, that’s what you keep telling yourself.

Or maybe you still have to work. My team and I will be working through the holidays, as will many other industry professionals. There will be fewer meetings and fewer emails, of course, but the wheels of entertainment never fully come to a halt. There are always support tickets to answer, databases to update, press releases to prepare, songs to write, etc.

Whatever the case, it’s fine to feel the way you feel. The holidays are difficult for everyone, But they are a time for the rest of reflection, even if you have to work! Over the next few weeks, there will be things you cannot accomplish. There will be people you cannot reach, contact you cannot complete, and calls that go on returned. Good! Let those people rest. They’ve earned it.

Please do what you need to survive and scratch that creative edge, but I must urge you to approach the next three weeks with an increased focus on the rest. Make time to think about the things you’ve accomplished and the things you are working toward at the moment. You probably can’t believe all that you accomplished over the last 12 months. You’ve done so much, and you’ve yet to do so many things that will be incredible, no doubt, but right now, your power is limited. Take that as a sign and rest. Do that in whatever form is best for you, but walk away from work. You’ve earned it.

The Music Industry ‘Holiday Slowdown’ is Fast Approaching [Video]

The end of the year is a weird time for music professionals, but we’ll explain what you can expect in the latest Music Biz update.

With Thanksgiving nearly here and countless ‘Best Of’ lists not far behind, 2021 is coming to an end. Soon there will be holiday shows, an appearance from Santa, holiday sales, and one or two crazy reunion gigs that happen just before the ball drop at midnight on January 1, 2022. A new year will then begin, and what comes next is anyone’s guess. Will it be better than the last two? We have to hope, right?

November and December are strange times for music professionals, but good as well. Every year, from the week of Thanksgiving through the beginning of January, the industry experiences what many people call ‘the industry slowdown.’ During this time, offices begin to close, unimportant emails get ignored, and professionals everywhere do the one thing they rarely do: Take time off.

Yes, the industry slowdown is an unspoken agreement amongst the biggest names in music that provides space for reflection and relaxation before another busy year begins. It is a cherished tradition that continues in the digital age despite consumers’ constant demand for fresh content and ideas. We at Haulix take it very seriously, and many of our peers do as well. We’ll let Music Biz host James Shotwell explain the rest:

Overthinking The Fall Concert Season As A Music Industry Professional

Every day someone asks me the same question: Where do we go from here?

On July 8, something incredible happened. For the first time in over 14 months, I stepped inside a music venue and watched multiple bands perform to an all-ages crowd without masks or social distancing. I cannot lie and say it felt normal. The first sign of a mosh pit made me cringe, as did the first person I saw crowd surfing. Over time, however, I grew comfortable. Everything was the way it would’ve been at any point before March 2020, and for a moment, that felt great.

Then I snapped back to reality. The year is 2021, and we are still in a global pandemic claiming more lives with each passing day. The world as we know it is not returning to normal. We don’t know what normal looks like anymore.

But entertainment is one of several industries leading the charge for normalcy. The last several months have included countless tour and festival announcements, each with on-sale dates and massive promotion. Tickets for these events have been selling in record numbers. Some analysts describe consumer behavior right now as “the YOLO economy.” People are spending more money to do more things than ever because they’re sick of the way we’ve been living for the last year. It seems everyone is willing to do anything that gets them out of their house, and most will pay whatever it takes for an experience that makes them feel a bit more alive.

At the same time, news of new COVID variants makes daily headlines. The cold hard truth is that nobody knows how to defeat the beast that this pandemic has become. Vaccines are incredibly effective at preventing sickness and keeping those who do contract the virus from dying. Still, there is a large segment of the population who are seemingly unwilling to get a shot. Then there’s the ongoing discussion about the possibility of needing additional injections down the line, as well as disagreements at every level of government as to what citizens should be made to do and what should be considered optional. All that, coupled with the increasingly aggressive variants that are continuing to emerge, the ongoing wage crisis in America and the worker shortage it’s creating, and that potential for a positive COVID diagnosis to completely derail any event at a moment’s notice, is making a lot of hurdles for people hoping to maintain the illusion of normalcy.

I cannot remember the last week that passed without one or more of my coworkers asking me what the industry at large was thinking regarding the coronavirus pandemic. At first, everyone was delaying their projects and tours until they could properly promote them with face-to-face fan interaction. Certain people who made that choice later pivoted to digitally releasing their creations without a proper promotional tour. Others are still sitting on ideas that have been percolating for nearly two years.

Elsewhere, some people are touring, and others are canceling tours. A few festivals are requiring proof of vaccination to enter, but others are not. Jason Isbell says he’ll cancel shows if they don’t require proof of vaccinations. Don’t test it. He’ll do it.

To put it in the simplest terms: The music industry as we know it is a mess right now. Nobody agrees on the right way to do things, and that is confusing the entertainment ecosystem. That confusion inevitably leads to anxiety, which creates stress, and before you know it — everyone is miserable.

But what can we do? The answer, for most of us, is nothing. We are at the mercy of the public. How millions of strangers choose to live their lives will decide what happens in our careers. If people are irresponsible, more music professionals will lose jobs, and live shows will disappear once more. If people protect themselves and others by following the guidelines of those on the frontlines, then maybe touring can continue. If touring can continue, albums can release, artists can sell merchandise, and everyone can make money. That money will then help pay to support label staff, publicists, management, booking agents, promoters, marketers, merch sellers, bus drivers, road crew members, producers, engineers, studio and office overhead costs, etc.

Trying to stay positive in the music industry right now is a lot like trying to stay positive about the future of civilization while being fully aware of climate change. In both instances, we recognize the need for change, but we also understand that the level of change needed is greater than what we can accomplish alone. The best we can do is stay safe, stay informed, and support one another. There will always be music. There will always be people writing songs and trying to find ways to get those songs to people who need to hear them. The music industry as we know it will inevitably change, but that change will hopefully lead to a better entertainment business for everyone. Change may be scary, but it is (usually) also good.

If you’re reading this right now and you or someone you love is working in music, please know you are not alone. Whatever storm of thoughts and doubts are circling your brain right now are plaguing many others as well, myself included. Nobody knows what next week is going to look like for our industry, let alone next month. What matters most is that we support another, talk to another, and never lose sight of why we fell for music in the first place. Music is the great equalizer. Throughout time, music is what brings people together. It is there for us in our darkest hours and our most brilliant moments. Music means so much to so many, and that will never change. Our roles in the industry will evolve and (more than likely) disappear in time, but new needs and opportunities will emerge. Throughout it all, music will remain.

Take it easy, my friend. There is nothing to do that isn’t already being done. For every problem, there is a solution, and we will find the answers we need in time. Until then, in the immortal words of Laura Jane Grace, “Don’t Lose Touch.”
