Monday Motivation: Skillet

If you’re anything like me, you probably started the day by recognizing that the start of a new work week had indeed arrived and then immediately began shaking your fists at the sky in anger. Monday is rarely anyone’s favorite day, and from what I have seen firsthand it feels safe to say it’s the one day of the week some people outright hate. I guess to them the arrival of the work week symbolizes the end of their quote/unquote freedom, and as a result they head into the office/factory/restaurant/store with a negative outlook already on their mind. This leads to bad attitudes, which only makes the experience of being at work worse, and for some reason it also seems to make time slow to a crawl. We’re not about that life, and we hope this post can do the same you that the song contained within it did for us.

When I was growing up in the midwest during the 90s and early 2000s there was a clear division between contemporary Christian music and mainstream pop/rock music. The Christian music industry was an entity all its own, with artists and charts specifically catering to those who chose their entertainment based on their religious affiliation. Those things still exist today, but the niche market of contemporary Christian music is not at all like it was in the past. Bands trying to make it in that corner of the industry today need to thematically meet certain standards while musically pandering to a much larger and for more general audience. The need to have some level of crossover appeal has never been higher in terms of ensuring longterm monetary success, and as a result fewer and fewer bands are able to establish a notable presence in both secular and religious arenas. Many tenured acts are struggling to keep afloat as well, but one band has endure the turbulent trends of the industry while continuously raising their profile world wide, and they just so happen to have one of the silliest names in music.

Skillet is a band I first encountered in my young teens when every piece of audio my parents allowed in our home was undeniably labeled Christian. The band built throngs of fans around the globe with a uniquely edgy take on modern praise and worship music that was kept grounded thanks to hard-hitting originals with creative themes that spoke to the feeling of being outside mainstream society in a way few artists could achieve. Skillet wrote music for outcast youth that told them there was a place for them within Christianity that they could feel safe calling home. I cannot speak for other teens of the time, but for a boy like me from a small town where he was bullied for being different than everyone else those songs felt like the answer I had been seeking throughout my young life. I took solace in the music of Skillet, and because their originals rocked so hard I had the confidence to tell my non-religious friends about their music (something that is typically difficult for me and many other young people to do).

As I grew older my continued interest in music lead me to bands and ideas well outside the world of contemporary Christian music, which in turn caused me to care less about bands I had previously clung to, but my love for Skillet never wavered. I could hypothesize why this was for several hundred words, but in short it’s due to the fact no other band to my knowledge was ever as forward-thinking as Skillet. With each release the band would push themselves to be something entirely different than whatever they were when recording their previous record. Sometimes they were obsessed with how they saw those with faith as being akin aliens, but other times they were tackling the monsters inside themselves. The only constants in their music was quality, creativity, and an unflinching desire to share their beliefs and faith without being so on the nose that they were written off as too preachy. I believe the band has achieved these goals with each album, and their latest is no exception.

Hitting stores this Friday, Unleashed is Skillet’s ninth studio album in a career that dates back to 1996. It’s a remarkably infectious release that builds on the sonic foundation of the band’s previous records without repeating any key themes. When I play the record, and in the last month I’ve probably logged at least three complete plays a week, I find the strength to fight through whatever stands between me and the things I wish to accomplish. While I will admit the band still caters to my belief in the unknown, I don’t think anyone needs to share their beliefs in order to be inspired by their music. Skillet are not trying to convert you as much as they are trying to encourage you to fight for what matters to you. They want you to find the success and empowerment that comes from recognizing you have the power to be whatever you want to be. That may sound corny written here, but it’s true, and their latest single(s) are proof of this:

Regardless of your religious affiliation, you could stand to learn a thing or two from Skillet. Don’t sleep on Unleashed.

Monday Motivation: Stray From The Path

We’re not about that life, and we hope this post can do the same you that the song contained within it did for us.

There is a quote from H.L. Mencken that I have kept on the wall in my office for the better part of the last half decade. It reads:

“Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.”

I could spend several minutes and paragraphs exploring the history of the black flag and its use in counter-culture proclamations against perceived acts of tyranny throughout time, but suffice to say it’s a symbol intended to send a message that a person, group, or community are no longer willing to sit idly by while corruption and wrongdoing continue to thrive. If there is anything we in the alternative music community have learned in 2015 it’s that no one has the right to say they have no place in the battle for a safe, welcoming scene. Between the rampant accusations of sexual misconduct, the low payout artists receive from streaming services, the rise of crimes against bands on the road, and the ever-present, albeit rarely discussed division that exists between various sub-groups of kids who claim to belong in this scene, there has never been a more urgent time for people to speak up, be active, and in other words fight for the community they claim to love.

This isn’t just a message to you, the reader, but also one to myself. I think it’s entirely possible for anyone to get caught in a routine of subpar living because we think we lack the power to drive substantial change,and it often isn’t until an outside forces tells us otherwise that we begin to believe in ourselves. If you feel the same, don’t worry. It’s normal. Too normal, in fact, and that is why it’s important to remain aware of your surroundings at all times. It doesn’t take long to find some corner of alternative music where controversy or problems exist, but it’s almost impossible to find anyone taking it upon themselves to inspire meaning change. It seems everyone wants to be the person who yells “Fire,” but no one wants to grab an extinguisher, and if that trend continues it won’t be long before we no longer have a scene at all.

Stray From The Path have long been a band who wore their opinions and hearts on their sleeve(s). They may have started out as any other unknown hardcore band from Long Island does, clawing and fighting for any piece of publicity they received, but over their last two releases it has become increasingly clear this band has undergone a change that made them something akin to a modern day Rage Against The Machine. I’m not saying they have the same sound or technical prowess of that group, but the reason for their existence, as well as the reason they continue to grow from release to release, seems to revolve almost entirely around the fact they say what others are afraid to even acknowledge. In a time where it seems most artists would rather write about the same three or four topics that have always been a selling point for alternative music than risk being seen as controversial, Stray From The Path are breaking down walls and shoving a fat middle finger in the face of anyone who says they are out of line. Their music is about awareness over sales, and it’s because of their diehard dedication to seeing improvement from the community, as well as the individuals who populate it, that I knew they had to be featured in one of our Motivation Monday posts.

The new Stray From The Path Album, Subliminal Criminals, finds the band being outspoken as ever as they tackle everything from the rise of sexual assault within music, to the misguided complaints of those experiencing ‘first world problems.’ It’s a chaotic and heart-pounding listening experience that can and will inspire you to fight for change in your own life. It’s the kind of record that could provide the soundtrack to the day you finally take a gamble on the lifelong dream you’ve kept a secret from your friends and family, or it could be the score to the day you kick the ass of the bully who has been making fun of you or people you know due to sexual preference. Whatever the case, it will motivate you to make a positive change in the world around you, and in my opinion there could be no better sign of a great record. New Music Tuesday: Citizen, Kacey Musgraves, & Leon Bridges

We know it would take far too long to highlight every client’s new release each week, so we’re going to choose a few select titles each week that we feel everyone should support. These are albums we will be buying ourselves, and we hope at the very least you give them a proper spin before deciding to purchase something else. James may write the column, but everyone at Haulix will have a say in who gets chosen.


Citizen – Everybody is Going To Heaven (CD/LP, Digital, Stream)

I didn’t know what to say the first time I heard Michigan natives Citizen perform their unique brand of boundary-pushing alternative rock, but I knew what I heard was something special. Their music feels like the impossible love child that could only result from the combination of Brand New and Nirvana, with just a dash of Thursday sprinkled on top to make you feel something beyond the typical ‘woe is me’ type emotions found in the underground alternative realm. Anyone familiar with the band before now is already familiar with this sound, but on Everybody Is Going To Heaven the band come into their own as only they are able. This is the record their debut, Youth, wanted to be, only better.


Kacey Musgraves – Pageant Material (CD/LP, Digital, Stream)

There is no such thing as country music anymore, or at least not in the classic sense. If people perform music that sounds like it could have been crafted by George Jones or Merle Haggard they’re labeled ‘traditional,’ while those who blend pop sensibilities with country structures are considered mainstream and/or crossover talents. Kacey Musgraves falls into the latter of those two descriptions, but there is no denying the influence of classic country hits on her latest album. Pageant Material plays like a collection of perfectly sequenced radio-ready singles, many of which have lyrics that feel written while Musgrave’s tongue was planted firmly in her cheek. It’s cute, but not cutesy. Fun, but not necessarily funny. It’s the future of modern country as far as I’m concerned, and it’s quite possible the catchiest album you will hear this summer. Don’t miss out.


Leon Bridges – Coming Home (CD/LP, Digital, Stream)

I won’t even beat around the bush on this one. There are some amongst the Haulix staff who believe Leon Bridges is destined to be the biggest start in the music business within the next five years, and they point to his newly released debut album as proof of his potential for global domination. It’s hard to describe what you’ll find on Coming Home without referencing the golden days of Motown and soul music, as the heavy influence from talents like Sam Cooke is oozing from every note and lyric on the entire record. If you close your eyes while the record plays you can actually picture the hazy, smoke-filled speakeasy where music like that created by Bridges was first rising to popularity over half a century ago. You see the men and women, all dressed to the nines, dancing as if they’re the only people in the world while alcohol splashes to the floor as they attempt to hold glasses and swing around a crowded room at the same time. You see and feel it all as if you were actually there, and then you open your eyes to realize everything you just experienced was caused by a twenty-something Texas native with a world of promise ahead of him. That is the power possessed by Coming Home, and I cannot recommend enough that you allow it to change your life as soon as time allows.
