Someone wrote about your music online…Now what?

Gaining the attention of blogs and their readers is no easy feat, especially for unsigned talent with little-to-no history. You can write the best songs and have the nicest videos, but if you do not know how to network and pitch yourselves no one will ever learn about your talent. Once they do however, there will only be a small window of time for you to capitalize on having won a moment of their attention, and this afternoon we’re going to learn what you should do in the hours after first receiving media attention.

1. Take time to celebrate, but realize there is still a lot left to accomplish.

I was never in a band that became popular enough to appear on sites like Absolutepunk or the like, but I would be lying if I said I didn’t spend many nights wishing one of the influential tastemakers of the scene mentioned my efforts in their publication. If your music/video/album gets mentioned, celebrate! You’ve taken yet another step towards your goal of a career in music, and while it’s certainly not enough to pay the bills it does serve as a strong reminder other people in the world care about your art. Don’t take that for granted.

2. Tell everyone in the world about the news (and ask them to share it).

This one probably goes without saying, but the unwritten rule of exposure on music outlets is that the band featured will publicly share and/or promote the publication’s content once its live. Don’t just share link to stories with fans, but ask them to share it as well, and don’t be afraid to request they comment on the post if time allows. Sites that see a bump in traffic or discussions from coverage of your band are likely to cover your band again in the future because they believe there is a value to your content that other unsigned acts cannot provide. In order to show them that value you will need the help of your fans, and its up to you to sell them on sharing your work.

3. Engage the comments section, but don’t antagonize them.

If the reason you’re reading this post is because the first article about your music just went live, you need to understand the response in the comments section may be very slow at first. As much as sites love to help expose young talent, people are not always quick to comment (especially in a positive sense) about something they are unfamiliar with. A great way to combat this is to actively participate in discussions taking place in the comments section of articles about your band. Answer questions for people, offer insight into your creative process, and generally speaking do whatever you can to be a decent human being that is open to criticism. It’s not that difficult, but it can make a world of difference in how quickly people become engaged with your art.

4. Say “thank you” and/or support the publication that wrote about you.

You would not believe the power the phrases “please” and “thank you” have in the music industry. From labels, to bands, publicists, and everyone in between you would be hard pressed to find anyone who thinks they hear either of those phrases too often. People tend to do as they please and take what they want without giving much though to the process behind it all, but you can stand out from the countless unsigned artists of the world by voicing your appreciation to the sites that give you space on their front page. It does not have to be anything formal, but it should be sincere. People remember those who are kind to them, and they’re far more likely to want to work with you again in the future as a result.

5. Don’t be afraid to begin teasing your next announcement.

Once people learn about your art it’s very likely they will want to know everything they can about your current efforts. Using social media and the comments sections on posts about your work, take a moment to tell people about everything else you have going on while your name is still fresh on their minds. They might not buy the album or see the tour you’re trying to promote, but at least they’ll know of it and will have the ability to share that information with others if such opportunities present themselves.

What do Shark Tank, Haulix and potatoes have in common? A very clever way to promote music!

Recently, our longtime client SideOneDummy Records found a unique way to get attention for an upcoming release using our system. Publicist Jamie Coletta was busy promoting the upcoming album from Rozwell Kid when she learned a company that is willing to send anyone a potato with a customized message. This is a real product that you can order today. The company behind it was even featured on Shark Tank:

Jamie approached us about her idea to use a Potato Gram several months ago because she wanted to ensure she could use Haulix for the promotion. To accomplish this, Jamie created a promo in our system and generated a unique promo URL for each user. She then used bit.ly to generate a shareable shortened URL for each Haulix URL that she then placed on each potato. Here’s what the final product looked like:

The promotion was so well received the potato itself got some attention from the media:

We love outside the box marketing. If you have an idea and are looking for help making it a reality, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Constant evolution is the key to professional stability

Roughly ten months ago, we (Haulix) messed up. Some of you may remember, but others may not. We planned for over a year to launch a new, completely overhauled version of our leading digital promotional platform, but when the time came for the updated system to go live there were bugs – a LOT of bugs.

We knew something was wrong almost as soon as the new system was live. Even though we had spent months of work on the updated platform, not to mention tens of thousands of dollars, we did not have a way to know if everything would function as it should without turning it on and letting our users run wild. So we tested as much as we could internally, wrote help docs to aide in helping people transition to the new layout, and hoped for the best.

Within hours of the updated system going live we were buried in complaints from clients and members of the media alike. Some could not even load the new site, while those who did encountered a number of bugs. Some people had very few issues, but those cases were decidedly rare. Despite our best efforts, our long-promoted new system was junk.

The next few days passed like a blur, with stress and confusion falling on our team, as well as our clients. Our system wasn’t working, which in turn meant our clients could not do their jobs. It was the worst thing to happen to our business since our launch, and it was entirely our fault.

We quickly realized the fastest way to right our wrongs was to tear the new system out of our service and replace it with the original one. The process took several hours, which came days after the problems first arose, but within a week we were back to where we started with a fully-functional, if somewhat dated platform.

In the weeks that past we came to learn a few things:

  • The people who cared most about the remodeled look of our platform was our own staff. Many clients who were able to access the new platform commented on how drastic the changes to our UI appeared to be. There was a shock value that wasn’t necessarily good.
  • Our core system remained the same on both versions of the platform, meaning despite all the money we spent we were still more or less offering the same product with a few additional bells and whistles.
  • Some of the changes we wanted to make were good, great even, but delivering them all at once could have been confusing. Even longtime clients would have had to learn new ways to navigate our platform.

For months we laid low, allowing clients to conduct their business as usual as we sat in meetings talking about what we should do next. In order to complete the broken update we would have to spend tens of thousands more, but was that really the right move?

Ultimately, we decided to shelve the new system and keep the one we knew was working. Instead of making one drastic change we decided to work on small, meaningful updates that we would release periodically throughout the year. So far in 2017 alone we’ve had no less than three of these updates, each bringing a new tool or capability to our system that would have been found in the overhauled platform.

As these updates have rolled out the response from our users has been largely positive. People appreciate changes that simplify their workflow, and by spacing out the updates we avoid confusing users by delivering too much new stuff at once. In turn, our business has been growing in an industry that is plagued by stories of stagnation or failure.

We still talk about that week in August when everything fell apart. It is something of an embarrassment for all of us, but in hindsight it needed to happen in order for us to understand the difference between what we felt was needed and what our clients actually wanted. We were able to find a path to growth that did not endanger our users understanding of the system, and in fact found great success through an alternative approach to development.

As the year progresses you will see more updates roll out from Haulix. The same goes for the year after that and so on as long as we’re a company. We will never stop growing and changing, but we know now that drastic change is rarely – if ever – the recipe for sustained growth. That kind of success lies in small, meaningful changes over an extended period of time that considers both the needs of our audience and their ability to navigate our system quickly. We stopped listening to ourselves and returned to the people who know us best, the ones who engage with our platform daily, and that has made all the difference.
