OP-ED: What movies got right about streaming is everything music got wrong

The following opinion piece was written by Haulix Digital Marketing Coordinator James Shotwell. We’d love to hear your opinion on this piece, so once you finish reading head over to Twitter and tell us what you think.

Before I dive too deep into this piece I want to stress that I am a huge supporter of streaming services in general. The age of streaming has made it possible for artists at every level to continue making money on older releases long after consumer interest in purchasing those titles has been depleted. We can argue all day about whether or not the royalty rate is acceptable (it’s not), but that is another conversation for another. Streaming provides a steady stream of income for artists even when they have nothing new to promote, which in turn makes it possible for more artists to continue creating even when their latest release is less than well received by the general public.

Okay? Okay.

The more I think about the digital age and how it has impacted the entertainment industry as a whole the more I realize that the film industry may have handled the war against piracy far better than those working in music. Unless a film is being released on VOD (video on demand), those interested in seeing a new title still have to buy a ticket and visit a theater in order to experience the film immediately following its release. Those who are not willing to do that must wait for the film to hit VOD (usually three months after a theatrical debut) or wait for the title to be made available on streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime (which typically happens six-nine months after the theatrical debut). Some may choose to pirate the film before that happens, but if they do their only viewing option is a significantly lower quality product, often captured by handycam or similar home video recording device.

This is not the case with music. Aside from a very select number of releases, every new album is made available on streaming services and in stores at the exact same time. More often than not, full streams of new releases hit the internet days before an album goes on sale, so even if you bought a copy through pre-order you are able to access the music as the same time as everyone who didn’t bother to support the artist in question. As long as you have access to YouTube you can more than likely hear a new release in full 2-3 days before it’s available for sale, and if you have an account through Spotify, Tidal, or AppleMusic you can hear the vast majority of all music ever made available in the digital format for less than the cost of one album in stores.

This is a long way of saying new release streaming on release day is a bad recipe for financial success. The ease of access does not raise the value of a product in the streaming age, it diminishes it. Why should consumers even consider paying $10 for an album they can essentially access for free? If I pay $10 a month for a streaming service and stream at least 1000 songs each month that means each song stream cost me one cent. As we already know, artists do not receive even a penny per stream, so the actual value of each song played is less than a cent. Add offline streaming to the mix, which is the equivalent to downloading an mp3 onto your computer or mobile device, and you’ve basically got an endless supply of digital albums at your disposal whenever you need them.

One could argue that cost to produce a movie is far greater than the cost of producing an album, which justifies the need to push direct sales and rentals longer than music, but cost of production matters very little in this situation. No artist or record label releases music hoping to make just enough money to cover the cost of production. Artists and their labels want to make as much money as possible, and I believe they may be selling themselves short by rushing to streaming services on release day.

If you think about it, the promotional efforts for new movies and new albums are basically the same across the board. A trailer for a film is like a music video or single for an album. Filmmakers and actors do interviews to build awareness for their upcoming release just like musicians. Stills from the movie are like promo photos for an artist or group. Posters are album covers. The difference is, when release day comes you still have to go to a theater to see the film. It’s not available on your phone as soon as you wake up unless it’s purchased in advance on a VOD platform. Your excitement for a new film may been building for weeks or months, just like it would for new music music, but on release day there is still a barrier to entry because studios understand those who really want the product are still willing pay for it. Those who are not as excited will wait for the cost to decrease or for the title to hit streaming platforms. Some will pirate the material, sure, but those people were never likely to buy a ticket or purchase the film in the first place.

If I had to pinpoint where music went wrong I would wager it happened somewhere around the dawn of the new millennium. Napster targeted music long before film piracy was a hot topic, and no one really knew how to respond. The music industry panicked, and soon the powers that be decided that the best way to fight piracy was to give everything away themselves in hopes of controlling the conversation. Their reasoning in this action was sound at the time: If labels and artists control how people access free content they can directly interact with and market to fans that are eager to hear the material.

As time carried on however, the ability to control the conversation by granting immediate/advance access began to shrink. Streams went from being hosted on an artist’s website to being available through third party platforms like Soundcloud and YouTube, which in turn made the material embeddable for anyone with a website. As you can guess, and as we now know thanks to numerous studies, this approach didn’t really solve anything except how easy it was for people to access music. According to a 2015 report from Cisco, music piracy is currently 48% worse than it was in 2008, and it’s expected to double by 2020.

A great example of immediate streaming hindering the sales potential of a record can be found by examining the rollout of Kanye West’s latest release, The Life Of Pablo. The album, which allegedly received 250 million streams during in its first week of availability in February 2016, was released exclusively through Tidal without an option for fans to buy the record. This lead to a surge in Tidal signups, which in turn garnered a good deal of press for the platform, but it also lead to a surge in music piracy. According to a report from TorrentFreak, a rip of the The Life Of Pablo was pirated through torrent sites more than half a million times in that same first week. This does not take into account direct downloads of the pirated album – AKA downloads from services like ZippyShare or MediaFire – which would likely place the number of stolen copies closer to, if not above, one million in a single week.

The Life Of Pablo was eventually made available for download on April 1 for $20. The album moved the equivalent to 90,000 units and hit number one on Billboard with more than half of its ‘sales’ being generated by streaming equivalent albums. That means Kanye actually sold, at most, around 40,000 downloads. Compared to the 327,000 first week album sales (pure album sales, no streaming) of his previous release, Yeezus, this is a dramatic 87% slide in first week sales. Furthermore, The Life Of Pablo has not sold more than 1000 downloads in a single week since its second week of availability, which puts Kanye’s total pure sales for this release to date (May 31, 2016) around 55,000 or less.

Kanye is not the only one covering low actual sales with big streaming numbers. The rate of streams is impressive, but the payout most likely is far lower than the total that could have been made from actual album sales. With this in mind, I posit that streaming’s impact on overall sales would be much lower if new releases didn’t hit streaming platform for a month(+) after their initial release. We cannot undo the last decade of content being made available instantaneously, largely for free, overnight, but we can adjust our release efforts moving forward in hopes of creating greater demand for downloads and physical product.

Some believe people are not willing to buy albums anymore because they do not want to risk purchasing something they might not like, but again that is exactly what happens in the world of film. Trailers for new movies can be very misleading, and we’ve all been fooled by a good trailer for a bad movie. Still, consumers spend billions of dollars every year to see new titles of all sizes in theaters or on demand. One could also argue the risk is even greater with film, as most ticket prices – especially for 3D films – are far higher than the cost of a record and they only allow for a single viewing/entertainment experience. Downloads and physical sales allow consumers to spend time with material, and more often than not repeated plays of a record have a tendency to change people’s views of the material.

Fans who are unwilling or unable to purchase an album outright can and will wait for the record to be available on a subscription platform. What artists and labels alike need to do is create demand up front, push sales hard for a short period, then – only after the core buying market has been depleted – make the content available everywhere. Once your product is a click away, especially at little to no cost to the consumer, you’re forever fighting an uphill battle for sales where consumers win far more often than content creators.

UNSPENT (Or “How to Avoid Becoming A Real Estate Agent”)

Rey Roldan is someone we consider both a client and friend. His Reybee PR team is one of the industry’s best, and no matter how busy he gets Rey always finds time to help aspiring professionals find their way in music. We asked Rey if he would be interested in contributing to our site on a regular basis earlier this year, and fortunately for us he said yes. The piece that follows is his latest creation, and we sincerely hope you enjoy the insight it has to offer.

“What do you call an ex-music industry person,” a friend asked me recently.

“I dunno, what,” I asked.

“A realtor,” he chuckled, and took a swig of his beer. But then, almost instantly, his expression changed, his laughter stopped, and he slunk away.

The funny thing is, this friend of mine was once a really successful music industry guy, handling flashy names and pop stars.  One day, while doing his PR gig at a major label, he decided he just couldn’t hack it anymore. He walked into his boss’s office and gave two weeks’ notice.  He was done… spent… over it.  He suffered career burnout.

I ran into him at the bar a few more times that night, and each time he asked me about the music business. When I’d answer, I’d temper my responses so it didn’t feel like I was rubbing it in his face, but still, he looked more and more bummed out with each of my answers. I could tell he really missed it. I guess realty just wasn’t as sexy.

The older I get and the more years I log in as a publicist, the more I worry about ending up like him, getting burned out at this job…  What on earth would I do if I had to start over? And really, I hated the thought of selling houses.

Needing some sound advice and words of wisdom from editor friends and publicist peers who were still in the industry, I asked a few if they fear getting burnt out and, more importantly, how they overcame it, because, God knows, I have no intention of talking about square footage and how many parking spaces come with each unit.

Whether you call it Writer’s Block, work fatigue, or career burnout, the ability to “keep on keeping on” is something that every each one of us encounters. Whether you’re an editor, staff writer, freelancer, blogger or publicist, getting unstuck when you’re hopelessly trapped in a mental headlock is a very real and sometimes difficult obstacle to maneuver. How each of us deal with it was what I was interested in learning.

For some, like Jason Pettigrew, Editor in Chief of Alternative Press, the nation’s leading publication in alternative music, mental fatigue is easily overcome by completely unplugging and getting back to the basics. “Given the 24/7/365 cycle of the internet, burnout is positively inevitable,” he explained to me. “The demands of various people in a journalist’s life—management, readers, loved ones—are hard to navigate and negotiate.”

When I asked him how he avoids hitting that brick wall, he replied, “The best way I’ve learned to cope with burnout is to take a vacation from devices. Don’t go on a conventional vacation: stay at home and don’t plug your phone or laptop in for a day. Try it. See what you’ll actually miss. Don’t take your phone to bed; take the love of your life.”

Even though I don’t have a “love of my life” (unless my dogs count and cozying up to them in bed just sounds wrong), Jason’s advice about shutting out technology and unplugging for some time sounded like really great advice, though the thought of being away from my iPhone even for an instant seems like it’s create mass chaos and emotional decay for me.

I turned to my buddy Robbie Daw, Editor-in-Chief of Idolator, the uber-trafficked site for pop music and gossip. Like Jason, Robbie logged years upon years of employment in the industry. “In my experience, burnout can happen with almost any field you enter into — and I’ve worked in film, television, print and online journalism,” he told me. “What I always remind myself is that at the heart of everything, I’m a writer, and when I’m feeling a bit creatively spent at any job, I try to create some kind of other outlet for me to get the juices flowing again, even if it’s in my spare time. For instance, during my six years working at a print publication, Instinct, I created Chart Rigger, a pop music blog, at home one Friday night in January 2005. I still bang out the occasional post on there and work on other types of writing in my spare time, and it alleviates a lot of day-to-day job stress and helps keep everything in perspective.”

Personally speaking, when I was a full-time journalist years ago, I kinda did what both of those guys did but in a slightly different manner.  Since smartphones hadn’t been discovered yet, unplugging wasn’t a problem, so I’d walk away from my computer and ride my bike around Boston.  Or, since I freelanced for a ton of different magazines, if I hit a mental block writing one article, I’d switch gears and redirect my creative energy and work on another article.  Either of those usually did the trick.

But now as a full-time publicist, I was curious how my PR peers dealt with it.  Unlike writers, publicists suffering from a mental block aren’t just affecting their own careers, but their clients’ careers as well.  Our own paychecks aren’t the only things at stake… our artists’ livelihoods are too.

So I thought I’d ask a hot shit whippersnapper publicist like Tito Bellis who works for well-known and respected indie music publicity and marketing firm Big Hassle Media. Considering the level of artists they handle such high-pressure clients as Against Me!, Jimmy Eat World, and The Replacements, among many others, Tito for sure must come dangerously close to breaking point.  “Due to the sheer pace and pressure surrounding the job of a publicist, burning out from time to time is bound to happen,” he explained. “For me, this tends to occur more in the summer time due to every single band and their mothers being on the road, festival season being in full swing, and the constant expectations and requests being flung at you from so many directions.” I wanted to make a crack about bands and their moms, but before I could interject, he continued, “Making time for yourself is important, but from within the job, I try to do my best to keep my plate manageable and work to include projects that are a little out of my wheelhouse just to keep things interesting, challenging and personally fulfilling.”

Tito does raise some great points… I mean, at the end of the day, we work in music.  We make a living out of writing, talking, and plugging away about music. So looking within our own spheres and finding something in there to keep things interesting and challenging must be pretty easy. And unless you’re a glutton for punishment and only work with music you absolutely despise, finding interesting stuff in our own artists is a great way to liven things up.  I mean, think about it: Instead of balancing spreadsheets and discussing mutual funds, we shoot the shit about music all day. Whether we’re talking about the Taylor Swift/Katy Perry feud, oogling Miley Cyrus’ Instagram feed, or pitching the new Electric Six album titled Bitch, Don’t Let Me Die (yes, that’s the REAL name of their new album that comes out in October… Hit me up if you want a copy… Shameless self-promo.  Oops?), the fact that we write about, talk about, and listen to music all day is probably one of silliest ways to make a living… so why on earth would we want to jeopardize that career because of something as transient as burnout??

Sometimes though, burnout isn’t due to our doing, but something that happens as a result. When I asked my pal Maggie Poulos, founder of Mixtape Media, the awesome Brooklyn-based music boutique firm who handles The Fontaines, BETS and Bird Dog among others, about her experiences, she relayed a story that sounded pretty soul-crushing… though the silver lining is that she regrouped her energy in… wait for it… Fiji. “I have absolutely suffered from publicist burnout,” she told me.  “In 2009, I was laid off from a very high-pressure situation and was able to take some real time off and went to Fiji for a few weeks. That was instrumental in helping me overcome my burnout that time, but I can’t always take off for the South Pacific.”  If only… but if you can turn lemons into lemonade while decked out on a tropical beach with a toucan on your shoulder and a pack of hyenas dragging buckets of Coronas to you, why not? (CONFESSION: I don’t know where Fiji is but I know it’s tropical).  “Lately though, when I’ve felt burnt out, I’ve sought out publicist friends and asked for advice on certain situations. It’s always helpful to have a fresh perspective and some new ideas heralded in by others in similar situations.”  Seeking solace from publicist friends and venting is also good because you can bitch about clients and they’ll understand you without stopping you to ask, “So wait, what exactly is ‘lead time’?”

A lot of times, it’s not just the work load that causes a mental and emotional shutdown.  Journalism and publicity alike is rife with pressure to deliver, often with a client at the ready to constantly remind you of the impending deadlines.  Managing client and editor expectations while delivering our journalistic pièce de résistance or brandishing our PR magnum opus is a balance we strive for, but achieving it can be extensively draining and soul sucking.

Detaching from the job, as Jason previously mentioned, seems to be the best way to relieve that stress and tackle it with a renewed sense of energy.

Similarly, Maggie feels the same way.  “I’ve also made a larger effort to compartmentalize my work things and not let them bleed over into the rest of my life as they have in the past,” she explained. “It’s hard, but I find it’s better for me to stick to designated work hours. While it’s not always possible with this job, I do try to keep work in check. It’s also important to maintain a healthy social life – it’s always beneficial to me to remember that my life is more than my job. That all being said, music is still my passion and I still enjoy doing what I do.”

So with this precarious game of weights and pulleys, how does one stay connected and effervescent in our chosen careers… and is it possible to maintain a lifelong career in these fields? “I remember someone once telling me when I was working in print that most editors switch jobs within five years — and usually it’s to become a publicist,” laughs Robbie.  “Whether or not that’s the actual case, I don’t know. But I do see writing as a lifelong career for me. Whatever form that takes as far as actual nine-to-five jobs down the line, we shall see.”

Jason agrees.  Once a writer, always a writer.  “In the journalism world, I don’t think anyone in this line of work ever leaves writing full stop,” he says. “Robert Christgau [music journalist, essayist, and self-proclaimed “Dean of American Rock Critics”] is still very much offering his personal take on eras, be it his youth via his personal memoirs (His recent memoir, Going Into The City) and on things that are very much all about right now (his “Expert Witness” series for Vice). What’s good for music writers who are aligned to a particular era or movement, is the old adage of “history is what’s happening now.” Those who are entrenched in something are documenting history. Then decades later, when the inevitable revival or interest in a cultural adjunct is revived, consider who should be read – a well-constructed press release or someone who was there? I didn’t fully realize consider this until Alternative Press turned 30 and music fans and industry types reminded me of that scope.”

The publicists agree as well… It’s like a chosen field.  You don’t chose to be a publicist… it chooses you.

“I don’t believe this job [as a publicist] has a shelf life,” explains Tito. “There is always a story needing to be told and this is a job entirely based on relationships. So the longer you commit to it, the more valuable you are. Keeping up with the constantly changing climate (e.g. lower press budgets/decreasing editorial real estate, etc.) can be frustrating and exhausting in general, but those who can continue to navigate it successfully will find it to be a career they can enjoy for the long haul.”

“I’ve seen many people do this work for decades and on the flip, but I’ve seen plenty of people get burnt out and move on to entirely different careers,” adds Maggie. “I love music and cannot imagine my involvement with it not being a part of my career, but I am not certain that it will always take the form of working in music publicity.  We shall see!”

******

I ran into my friend again last weekend.  I asked him how the real estate business was going.

“Dude, I’m thinking of starting an indie label with my friend… Real small, working with local bands here in North Jersey, who don’t know what they’re doing, but at least this gives them an outlet and a sense of accomplishment, and it’s one foot back in the door.”  I could see some fresh life pumping behind his eyes. The color was coming back into his face.

“What about the real estate business,” I repeated.

“It’s meh… It’s a job.  But the label, I’m working on big things…”  His voice trailed off as he detailed excitedly all the plans he had.

I guess it’s true that one does not choose to be in the music industry.  It chooses you.

The Problem With Warner Bros. Response To The Leak Of ‘Suicide Squad’ Footage

Yesterday afternoon, two days after their San Diego Comic-Con panel took place, Warner Bros. entertainment released the first footage from David Ayer’s upcoming adaptation of DC Comics popular Suicide Squad comic book series. This was just under forty-eight hours after incredibly low quality footage captured by fans attempting to simultaneously hide their phones spread like wildfire across the web. If you have not seen the official trailer yet, you can do so below, as I feel it’s only right to promote the film before we address the problems with how the footage was shared with the public.

Had the footage above been released with a basic press release announcing the film’s release, everyone would have rejoiced and moved on. Instead, Sue Kroll, President Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, released a statement alongside the clip that essentially attempts to shame comics fans for doing the same thing they do every year at this event when footage is not released. Her message reads:

“Warner Bros. Pictures and our anti-piracy team have worked tirelessly over the last 48 hours to contain the Suicide Squad footage that was pirated from Hall H on Saturday. We have been unable to achieve that goal. Today we will release the same footage that has been illegally circulating on the web, in the form it was created and high quality with which it was intended to be enjoyed. We regret this decision as it was our intention to keep the footage as a unique experience for the Comic Con crowd, but we cannot continue to allow the film to be represented by the poor quality of the pirated footage stolen from our presentation.”

We would never encourage the proliferation of digital piracy in any form, but companies like Warner Bros. need to understand how fandom works in the digital age in order to properly cater to today’s youth market. The fact people share poor quality videos of unreleased footage online is a shame, and that is certainly a point worth being made. You cannot, however, hold a public screening of unreleased footage in a setting where everyone is allowed to have their smart phone, especially if that place has a long history of video piracy, and not assume some level of risk. That’s just common sense.

The worst part of it all is that Warner Bros. seems to have been aware of SDCC’s history with video piracy this entire time. Within moments of premiering the latest trailer for Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice, which was screened during the same panel as the Suicide Squad footage, the studio made the same trailer available on its official YouTube channel for the world to see. If I had to guess why this happened, it may because the Comic-Con exclusive teaser for Dawn Of Justice that was screened in 2014 suffered a cell phone captured leak immediately following its premiere, but that may not been a factor at all. Whatever the case, the release of the latest Batman V Superman trailer set a precedent for the event that the studio did not follow with the other footage screened, which infuriated the throngs of online comic fans who were relying on those clips to feels as close to their favorite characters as the people able to afford the trip and time needed to get into Comic-Con’s beloved Hall H. The studio had met the demand for content once, but why not twice? The Suicide Squad film may be over a year from release, but WB has shown teasers and trailers for other properties this far out, so why not this one?

The reason studios appear at Comic-Con is to show fans of various franchises that they are not going to bastardize their beloved characters by making them into something they are not. It’s fan servicing done in the hopes of creating long term buzz for big budget projects that play a large role in a company’s financial gambles in the year(s) ahead without the expense of a large scale marketing campaign. The idea, at least in theory, is that the people who attend events like Comic-Con are the biggest fans in the world, but as the market for comics, science fictions, zombies, and fandom in general has boomed over the last decade that is no longer the case. The people on the floor at Comic-Con are simply the luckiest of the lucky fans. They were able to register for San Diego Comic-Con while the rest of us were stuck on a wait list, hoping the page would refresh before every pass was taken. They may be the biggest fans, or they may just have good connections. Either way, studios big and small need to realize that it’s a far better play to release whatever teaser footage themselves, both at Comic-Con and online, if they want to maximize reach and fan engagement.

To be fair, WB is not the only studio who has yet to learn from past encounters with digital pirates during fan-centric events. Fox, another studio with major properties to promote at Comic-Con, also refused to post footage of their latest properties. Though fan filmed footage of trailers for both Deadpool and X-Men: Apocalypse have found their way online, the studio remains quiet. Marvel, whose films were absent at Comic-Con this year, suffered multiple footage leaks following their Phase Three announcement event in Los Angeles last fall. Proper versions of that footage remained unavailable for a long time, but some has since been released (as part of Avengers: Age Of Ultron).

Studios need to realize that it’s not only fans who want this footage anymore, but legitimate news outlets as well. Every major entertainment reporter may be on-site in San Diego, but everyone knows posting a video of new footage is always better than writing about footage no one will see for weeks, if not months. The ‘X-Men’ footage mentioned above, which was leaked online a few hours after the Fox panel ended, was spotted on sites like YahooThe Wrap and Business Insider, though the clips were later removed. Still, these are legitimate news outlets posted cell phone captured video of unreleased footage for no reason other than the overwhelming demand for such content to be shared online. It’s as if sharing this material has become commonplace, and that is a very dangerous thought to entertain.

If studios wanted our advice we would tell them the same thing we tell anyone in music who tells us they suffered from a leak, and that is to find the fastest way to control the conversation. When low quality bootlegs are the first way fans engage with a studio’s new film, the studio itself has no say in the experience the fans have when viewing their content. They don’t control quality, supporting text, or even who has the quote/unquote ‘exclusive,’ but if they release a proper HD cut of the footage themselves the tables turn back in their favor. By sharing the footage when demand is already at an all-time high, as it is during Comic-Con weekend, Warner Bros.-or any other studio-can maximize their ability to hook fans early and generate buzz that, hopefully, will only continue to build in the many months leading up to the film’s release.

At the end of the day, you just can’t have it both ways. You cannot hope to build fan excitement for a high profile property by screening footage in a room open to the general public and not expect someone to share it with someone who isn’t in that room. Our culture today is defined by our ability to share seemingly everything we experience, often in real time. Until studios understand that fans will always find a way to share this content with other fans and stop scolding the people they are trying to get into theaters there will continue to be leaks. If you want to generate buzz from the diehard fans through sharing footage you need to make that footage available to everyone. It’s the simple. Just as life finds a way even in the harshest of environments, fans will find a way to get footage to other fans even if a sign or two told them to put their cell phones away.
