Inside Music Podcast #142: King 810 (David Gunn)

“All my life I learned that one day we all burn”King 810

Someone once said that the only story any of us have to tell is our own. That advice is responsible for countless novels and memoirs, not to mention songs, movies, and other forms of art. It’s also the reason why the music of King 810 feels unique a world flooded by heavy bands making hard-hitting music influenced by the world around us.

Founded in Flint, MI, King 810 begins every song by first recording stream of conscious lyrics delivered by founding member David Gunn. The music, which has incited mosh pits around the world, comes second. That fact alone is enough to set the band apart, but when you listen closely to what Gunn is sharing you begin to understand what it’s really like to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes. Gunn has lived a life like no other in a city the world never gave a damn about, and now he’s sharing his journey through music. It’s jarring in the most memorable of ways.

On this episode of Inside Music, host James Shotwell calls King 810 founder and lead vocalist David Gunn to discuss his group’s new album, Suicide King. Gunn recounts the influences and motivation behind the new record, as well as the events that lead him to pen his upcoming memoir. James also asks about Gunn’s perspective on the world, which plays a pivotal role in the sound of Suicide King, as well as Gunn’s thoughts on some of today’s most talked about philosophers.
