What we have learned thus far in 2017

The end of June is upon us, which means we are already halfway through 2017. Can you believe it? We set high goals for ourselves this year, many of which we detailed in a length post that ran on this very blog back at the beginning of January. We promised we would be better, smarter company. We promised changes both big and small. We told everyone we knew that we would not let the setbacks of 2016 continue to make us afraid of change moving forward.

We are happy to report that we have stuck to our commitments and as a result have seen some growth in 2017. This growth falls in line with the growth our industry as a whole has experienced lately, but it is not something we ever take for granted. We have also – and perhaps far more importantly – succeeded in pleasing new and longtime clients through our development efforts. We have made good on promises that we may have let slip in the past, and through doing so improved our relationship with users.

If you told us we would be here back in December we might of told you it was all wishful thinking. We were never truly in dire straits, but after a platform relaunch failed spectacularly in the middle of August 2016 we tucked our tails between our legs and laid low. We did not talk about developing things further as much as we did better marketing what we had, what we knew worked and what we knew people wanted. “Why change?” We thought. “People like us just the way we are.”

Around the end of the year we had a change of heart. People may have liked us as we were, but we were not happy. We wanted a better platform, and we knew what needed to be done to get there. We could not afford to hire more development. We also could not afford to wait to pay the bills hanging over our heads of before making changes. If we wanted something done we had to do what we had always done, which meant doing it on our own.

Beginning in January we made lists of every update we felt our services needed. These items were pulled from conversations and emails with customers from the last five years, and we used the frequency they were requested to make a list of our top priorities. From there, we discussed the logistics of each update and tried to arrange them on a timeline that allowed us to make frequent updates throughout 2017 and beyond. We were no longer thinking about a single overhaul, but rather dozens of tiny updates spread out over time so that no one could ever feel as if the system they loved changed overnight.

We started small. The first few updates we made were not even noticeable to the average consumer, but the upgraded critical elements of our backend that we had been meaning to attend to for some time. Then we turned our vision to our site, our presentation, and even the layout of our help pages. We revisited every single page on our platform and made note of everything we knew could be better. We don’t have a final tally as to changes desired, but we know it to be in the dozens.

Most recently, our team began taking aim at the MyPromos and Profile pages. These elements of Haulix are some of the most important in our system. We don’t know when various elements of our planned changes will go into effect so we won’t detail too much right now, but do know changes will begin to appear in this section of our platform in early July.

It’s unclear if we have learned something new this year or if we just remembered what lead us to success in the first place. Haulix was never the result of hired gun developers coding a system they would never use or need. Haulix was built by members of the music industry for members of the music industry with security, ease of use, and customization in mind. Before last year we had done everything ourselves because we knew we could fulfill our dreams better than anyone could interpret them for us, but for some reason we lost our way. We tried to do something different that removed an element of authenticity from what we do. That might not be the sole cause of our relaunch failure, but it certainly contributed to it.

This year we have learned that we can – and should – do things ourselves. We have always promoted those who take it upon themselves to make a positive change in their lives because we know deep down that is the only true way to succeed. Maybe we forgot that at one point, or perhaps we thought we knew a better, more efficient way. Whatever the case, we know now we were wrong, and thankfully we are able to look back on this past year as a learning experience instead of something that nearly broke us.

Moving forward, every change and update made to Haulix will come through the work and input of the Haulix community. We are going to continue to serve our audience as we always have, making changes that fall in line with their needs, and we hope they continue to growth with us. For the first time in a year we can say the future truly looks bright, and we thank you for joining us on this journey.

Haulix Weekly Update #132: “Remember when I said I’d eat you last? I lied.”

Hello, everyone! We hope this update finds you staying cool as the summer temperatures begin to roll in. It is currently 93 degree in Minneapolis as we write this post, which for midwesterners like ourselves feels like the surface of the sun. Thankfully, there are a number of crazy good album releases arriving in stores today, and we’re going to try and keep our minds off the heat by enjoying those works. If you need a recommendation, check this out:

As I mentioned above, each and every weekend we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

Development updates:

We told you last week that we were finally prepping for the release of our long-awaited platform overhaul, and we are happy to report we are still on track to meet our desired deadline. We don’t want to jinx ourselves by putting an exact date out into the world just yet, but know that we are within 2 weeks of seeing our vision for the future of Haulix (and really – promotional distribution as a whole) realized. More news on that will appear on this blog in the days ahead.

Blog updates:

If you have been following our daily posts you’ll have no doubt recognized a lot of content being produced as of late. This is admittedly part of a two-fold plan. On one hand, we want to provide you with everything you need to navigate the modern music business. On the other hand, we know as we near the launch of the new Haulix we will not have time for content creation, so we’re shoveling out a lot of posts now to hold you over until we can return to business as usual. If you missed anything as of late, especially our podcasts, please head over to our archive and catch up ASAP.

That’s all we have for this week. Check back Sunday for an all-new music industry job board.

XOXO

Haulix Weekly Update #121: “Do you follow my husband around to sell him hot dogs?”

Greetings, ladies and gentlemen. Thank you so much for carving a small bit of time out of your surely busy schedule to browse our company blog. The month of February has been hectic so far, but each and every week we like to take a little time to sit back, reflect, and review everything that has transpired at HQ in the recent days. Before we get there however, we wanted to share a song that has been on repeat around our offices in Minneapolis. Check it out:

As I mentioned above, each and every weekend we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

Development news:

We know we say this a lot, but you would not believe how cool the next version of Haulix will be. We understand that we tease the forthcoming update, currently codenamed ‘Falcon,’ a lot, but that is only because we find a new reason every single week to believe we are closer than ever from providing consumers with the perfect promotional distribution platform. From uploading and customization of promos, to the way journalists access our system and the quality of streams they’re able to access, we have made improvements big and small across the board. Functionality won’t change much, if at all, but the power offered to users will be greater than ever before.

As for a release date, it appears we are still not ready to drop that information just yet. When we are ready however, you will be the first to know.

Blog news:

With all the planning and work being put into the next phase of product development we have admittedly put our blog efforts on the back burner a bit. That said, we are still churning out 5-10 original columns every week, including our podcast (Inside Music). We may not be hitting the same quantity we did three months back, but we believe the quality of what we create is better now than ever before. Don’t believe us? Head over to the archives and see for yourself.

That is all the news we have to share this week. Have a wonderful weekend and be sure to check back tomorrow for a brand new Job Board.

Best,

Team Haulix

Haulix Weekly Update #115: “I’m A Star Wars”

Hello, everyone. We, like many of you, are counting down the final hours of our work week in hopes of seeing the latest Star Wars film before anyone spoils it for us. That has been a mission of our since the film was announced, but we don’t think anyone could have predicted just how hard avoiding spoilers would prove to be. This site, however, is a safe place. We don’t even write about Star Wars! We’re here to talk about the music business, and to be far more specific this post is about our role in the business of music, as well as how that role is changing. It’s also a place where we share songs we love, like this:

As I mentioned above, each and every weekend we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

Development News:

This is similar to the update from last week, which is another way of saying we are still working on our long-gestating site wide relaunch. Our development continued to work on the new version of Haulix all week long, and we will tell you first that a great deal of progress has been made. We know we originally planned to have this massive update done in time for the new year, but right now we are looking at a release closer to March. If that feels like forever away, trust us, we feel the same. Every effort is being made to complete this project as fast as possible, but we refuse to cut corners. We pride ourselves on having a product of the highest quality, and we refuse to let that slip in order to be a bit more timely with our release.

Blog News:

This week was the first of the holiday seasons where we noticed many of our peers logging off for the year. There is always an industry slowdown around Christmas, but some seem to be getting an early start on their vacation in 2015. Not us! We will be posting content right up to, and immediately following, Christmas Day. We don’t want you to spend a single day without having a place to turn for new lessons on music, so our efforts won’t stop anytime soon.

Haulix Weekly Update #108: “The doll’s trying to kill me and the toaster’s been laughing at me!”

Good afternoon, everyone. Thank you for finding a few minutes in your busy schedule to browse our company blog. Life has been rather hectic around HQ this week, and like many of you we are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the weekend. Before we get there however, we want to take a little time to reflect on everything we have accomplished in recent days. We also want to share this killer song with you, which has become something of an anthem for us as of late:

As I mentioned above, each and every weekend we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

Development News:

After a few weeks of teasers regarding the new platform we’re sorry to say this week arrives with no new updates from the Haulix Dev team. Our small team is doing the kind of work that would usually be handled by 10 or more developers, and the progress they’ve made so far is nothing short of stunning. We cannot wait to share our new platform with all of you, but right now we must ask that you be patient just a little while longer. We hope to have all work completed by the end of November, but we cannot guarantee when the updated site will launch just yet. Maybe next week.

Blog News:

This was a weird week for a our blog team. James Shotwell, Marketing Coordinator for the company, actually abandoned his post behind a computer to travel to Pennsylvania for a speaking engagement at Mansfield University. While there, James engaged the student body with tales from the front lines of the war on piracy, as well as stories from his career in the industry. All that said, James still managed to churn out a bundle of great content, which you can find links to below:

Haulix Weekly Update #106: “Are these idiots getting louder or dumber?”

Hey there, everyone. Thank you for taking a few minutes to explore our blog. If you’re reading this post on the day it goes live then you are likely waiting for the weekend to arrive. We’re in the same boat as you, and to be honest we all have some wild plans for the days ahead. Before we get there however, we want to take a few minutes to reflect on all that has happened at HQ in recent days. We also wanted to share thing song with you, which a few of us plan to have on repeat all weekend long:

As I mentioned above, each and every weekend we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

DEVELOPMENT NEWS:

We actually have some news to reveal this week, though it is admittedly not the type of thing we are excited to share. Due to a few minor setbacks over the last week, we are now expecting our updated platform to be ready for public consumption during the last half of November. This means you might have to wait about a month longer than originally anticipated, but I can assure you it’s worth it.

In other development news, our team actually spent some time together this week. Our staff is spread across the country, but a few times every year we join together to focus on our future plans. That was the agenda on Friday night, and we’re excited to say some really cool stuff was discussed. We can’t talk about it, but please know the gears are always turning at Haulix HQ.

BLOG NEWS:

We have been busy planning the relaunch of Haulix, so most of our time outside of content creation has been dedicated to that. We are thrilled to finally have Inside Music back on a regular basis, and we appreciate those of you who continued to support and/or request the show during its absence.
