Most Billboard Album Charts Now Include Streaming

The future is here, and it is changing what we consider a best-selling album.

Years after updating the Billboard 200 chart to reflect both streaming and track sales, Billboard has announced it will now do the same for most of it’s other genre-based album charts as well.  The following charts now reflect the new measurement methodology starting this week:

Top Country Albums

Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, plus:
-R&B Albums
-Rap Albums

Top Rock Albums, plus:
-Alternative Albums
-Hard Rock Albums
-Americana/Folk Albums

Top Latin Albums, plus:
-Latin Pop Albums
-Regional Mexican Albums
-Tropical Albums
-Latin Rhythm Albums

Top Dance/Electronic Albums

Top Gospel Albums

Top Christian Albums, plus:
-Christian/Gospel Albums

Soundtracks

Top Catalog Albums

Holiday Albums

The charts are still essentially based on sales, but 10 digital track sales from an album will equate to one equivalent album sale (TEA), and 1,500 on-demand song streams from an album will be equivalent to one album sale (SEA). Sales and streaming data is compiled by Nielsen Music.

Billboard will also continue to publish pure album sales charts for the above genres using Nielsen’s sales data exclusively.

Several on-demand subscription streaming services provide data for the charts, including Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, Amazon Music, Soundcloud, Slacker, Napster, Google Play, Groove Music and Medianet.

How this change will impact who ranks where remains to be seen, but it stands to reason that artists with viral hits – such as Migos’ with their hit “Bad and Boujee” – could see big first week numbers once streams for their singles are factored into the equation.

Haulix Weekly Update #138: “Dear Mr. President, there are too many states nowadays.”

Hello, everyone! We hope this update finds you staying cool as the summer temperatures begin to roll in. It is currently 83 degree in Minneapolis as we write this post, which for midwesterners like ourselves feels like the surface of the sun. Thankfully, there are a number of crazy good album releases arriving in stores today, and we’re going to try and keep our minds off the heat by enjoying those works. If you need a recommendation, check this out:

As I mentioned above, each and every weekend we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

Development updates:

What if I were to tell you this is the last or second to last Weekly Update post before the new version of Haulix arrives? I’m not saying that is absolutely true, but I am also not saying it’s a lie. I’m actually not allowed to tell you when the site will be live just yet, but know within 14 days our world is going to change in a big way. More news will come on Monday….

Blog updates:

Now that the new site is basically complete (shhh, you didn’t read that here) we have been recently become able to focus on our blog a bit more. There was a steady stream of content throughout the week, and a lot of it focused on how to improve one’s own email game. You may think email is simple, and it is for the most part, but actually making smart business moves through email can be fairly complicated for the inexperienced. If you missed anything as of late, especially our podcasts, please head over to our archive and catch up ASAP.

That’s all we have for this week. Check back Sunday for an all-new music industry job board.

XOXO

Haulix Weekly Update #131: “This better be about pizza”

Hello, everyone! We’re a day late posting this update, but rest assured that all is well at Haulix HQ. We have some big changes on the horizon, and starting with this post we are going to reveal some of what lies in store. Before we get there however, we would like to begin this recap with a song we have had on repeat all week long. Check this out:

As I mentioned above, each and every weekend we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

Development news:

The long-teased Haulix platform update is so close. In fact, by the end of this month we will all be enjoying what we have dubbed ‘Project Falcon’ in full. We don’t want to give away the exact launch date just yet, but know it’s coming much sooner than you think.

Blog news:

Activity on the blog was up this week, but content creation is still taking a back seat to work on the new platform. We are quite proud of the material shared as of late, so please take a few moments to experience everything we have prepared for you. The best way to do that, at least in our opinion, is by scrolling through our archives. Enjoy.

That is all the news we have to share this week. Have a safe and productive weekend. We will see you back here on Sunday for a brand new job board.

Best,

Haulix

Haulix Weekly Update #126 – “Homer Simpson, smiling politely”

Hello and welcome to another end of week recap from Haulix HQ. The month of April is now in full swing, but one look at the forecast and you wouldn’t be wrong to ask if winter was still lingering in the air. Spring may have sprung, but it doesn’t feel like it on the Minneapolis streets outside our front door. Still, we make due with whatever mother nature hurls our way, and part of how we do that is by listening to great music like this:

As we mentioned before, each and every weekend we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

Development news:

Yes, we have news! After many months of teasers and promises we have finally set a desired launch date for our major platform revisions at the end of this month. Our entire team is working round the clock to make that goal a reality, and as we near the end of April we will begin revealing all we have in store. Stay tuned!

Haulix Weekly Update #124: “He calls himself ‘The Wallet Inspector’”

Hello again, everyone! We hope this message finds you well. March is already a quarter of the way done and we are finally starting to feel like we have a firm grasp on everything we wish to accomplish in the coming months. We like to use Fridays to reflect on everything we have done as of late, but before we get there we wanted to share this track that has been on repeat in our offices this week. Enjoy:

As I mentioned above, each and every weekend we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

Development news:

The long-teased Haulix platform update is still a few weeks from completion, but progress is being made with each passing day. Our company recently switched to Microsoft Azure, which has proven incredibly beneficial. Our costs are lower, but we have more power than ever. The implementation of Azure was the last ‘big piece’ we needed before piecing together the new platform, so it feels safe to say we are finally in the home stretch of this development process.

As for a release date, it appears we are still not ready to drop that information just yet. When we are ready however, you will be the first to know.

Blog news:

With all the planning and work being put into the next phase of product development we have admittedly put our blog efforts on the back burner a bit. That said, we are still churning out 5-10 original columns every week, including our podcast (Inside Music). We may not be hitting the same quantity we did three months back, but we believe the quality of what we create is better now than ever before. Don’t believe us? Head over to the archives and see for yourself.

That is all the news we have to share this week. Have a wonderful weekend and be sure to check back tomorrow for a brand new Job Board.

Best,

Team Haulix

Haulix Weekly Update #122: “No, it’s the children that are wrong.”

Hello, everyone. Welcome to the final recap of February 2016. It’s kind of hard to believe this year is already 1/6 complete, but that appears to be the case. Have you been tackling you new year’s resolutions, or putting them off? We’ve done our best to do the former, but it’s hard to resist a lazy weekend at home. One of the things motivating us has been music, especially this song:

As I mentioned above, each and every weekend we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

Development news:

The new version of Haulix is coming along smoothly, though we are uncertain it will be ready for unveiling at SXSW as originally planned. As a result, we wish to keep most the details regarding the numerous updates planned under wraps. We will say that the new Haulix will be easier to use and offer better security than any of our competitors can claim. We have poured everything we have into this project, and we will continue to do so until it is as good as it can possible be. You deserve nothing but the best, and we will find a way to make it available.

Haulix Weekly Update #118: “Batman’s a scientist”

Hello, everyone. We’re here to talk about the music business, and to be far more specific this post is about our role in the business of music, as well as how that role is changing. It’s also a place where we share songs we love, like this:

As I mentioned above, each and every weekend we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

Important update:

We are doing a large server upgrade this weekend.  Our new network will be able to auto-scale as we continue to grow and you continue to create and send out more promos.

While we are working on this upgrade, there might be some down time. The scheduled block of time will be between Saturday January 23 – 9AM CST to Sunday January 24 – 6PM CST.

If you have any questions, send them to matt@haulix.com.

Development news:

After the underlying server infrastructure is upgraded (this weekend), we will be getting ready to launch the new Haulix website.

The site will include over a dozen new features, as well as a completely re-built email engine that will support press releases AND promo invitations using a new drag and drop email designer.

We will be releasing more information about the new site in the next month or so.

Blog news:

Things on the blog continue to progress with each passing week. This is always the case, I suppose, but in the past week it has especially been true as we have been attempting to plan the remainder of 2016. If there is anything you would like to see us cover, shoot James an email at james@haulix.com

If you missed anything this week, use the archive and get caught up.

That’s all we have for this week. Check back on Sunday for a new Job Board!

Haulix Weekly Update #117: “Hi, Super Nintendo Chalmers!”

Hello, everyone. Thank you for finding a few minutes in your schedule to browse the Haulix blog. Life has been hectic for our team as of late. We have been working around the clock to bring the next version of our platform to life, and along the way we’ve been creating a wealth of industry-focused content to help you better navigate the industry at large. We’re planning to tell you all the latest news in this post, but first there is a song you absolutely need to hear:

As I mentioned above, each and every weekend we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

Development news:

As mentioned in the opening paragraph, work on the next version of Haulix continued this week, and our developers tell us there are still several weeks of work ahead. Anyone who has followed this project since inception knows this has been the news pretty much every week since November, but we assure you progress is being made with each passing day. We believe we could release the product as is and patch things as needed or we could get it right the first time out. The latter takes longer, but we believe it is the better choice, and we appreciate your continued patience.

Blog news:

Activity on the blog was up this week, but content creation is still taking a back seat to work on the new platform. We are quite proud of the material shared as of late, so please take a few moments to experience everything we have prepared for you. A list of recent links can be found below:

Haulix Weekly Update #116: Hi-Diddly-Ho Neighboureeno

Can you believe three weeks have passed since we ran one of these updates? Work around Haulix HQ hasn’t stalled in the slightest, but we figured there was no real point in creating content on Christmas Day or New Years, and we hope you understand. We also hope you had a wonderful holiday break. Our was good, but like we said above our team’s hustle never really slowed. This week was like any other in that respect, but still some cool stuff developed that we would like to discuss. Before we get there however, listen to this:

As I mentioned above, each and every weekend we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

DEVELOPMENT NEWS:

The new version of Haulix is coming along smoothly, and we believe now that it will be live in time for SXSW in March. We still wish to keep most the details regarding the numerous updates planned under wraps, but we will say that the new Haulix will be easier to use and offer better security than any of our competitors can claim. We have poured everything we have into this project, and we will continue to do so until it is as good as it can possible be. You deserve nothing but the best, and we will find a way to make it available.

BLOG NEWS:

The blog has been a bit of a background piece this week, as our entire team continues to focus the majority of their time on the upcoming debut of our new platform. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announces 2016 inductees

The Rock And Roll Hall of Fame has announced its five inductees for 2016. The ceremony to welcome them will take place on Friday, April 8, 2016 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York for the second time. HBO will broadcast the ceremony in spring 2016.

Each act on the list spent decades developing their place in music, and that is one of the requirements for inclusion consideration. An act has to be in business for at least 25 years after the release of its first album to be nominated, but they do not have to be active that entire time. If the group comes out, releases an album or two and breaks up they are still able to be considered for placement in the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame.

Of the nominees considered this year, N.W.A, Cheap Trick, Deep Purple, Steve Miller, and Chicago are the ones who were selected to be added to the pantheon of all things rock. Most of the artists chosen have been around for upwards of 40 years, but some have only recently become eligible for nomination (N.W.A).

A group of more than 600 artists and music professionals vote on the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame inductions every year. For five years, the Rock Hall has allowed fans to vote, too. But their top pick counts as a single vote. In 2015, Chicago was the band with the most votes, as the 37-million ballots cast with their name on it accounted for 23% of the total votes for the year.

Dozens of iconic artists who recently became eligible for Rock Hall consideration did not make the cut. Listing them all would take far too long, but a few serious contenders were The Smiths, Nine Inch Nails, The Cars, Chic, Janet Jackson, The J.B.’s, Chaka Khan, Los Lobos, The Spinners, and Yes. It’s a little bit of a surprise that Janet did not make the cut, as women are not represented in any of the newly inducted acts, but perhaps next year will be her year.

To celebrate the artists chosen for induction, please join us in revisiting some of those bands’ biggest singles…
