4 Things Every Artist Can Learn From The Incredible First Week Sales Of Adele’s New Album

The first week sales numbers for Adele’s third album are in, and the results are even better than the most absurd predictions suggested they would be. With no streams made available through any service and only one single released to radio, Adele’s 25 moved just over three-million copies in the United States during the week ending last Friday, November 27. That number is almost a million units above the previous best first-week sales, which was set by the boy band *NSYNC in a year when the industry as a whole moved over 700 million units. This year, the industry will move just over 200 million units, meaning Adele’s sales already account for money than 1% of all music sold in America during 2015, and that number is going to continue to rise as we head further into the holiday shopping season.

There are many things that can be inferred from these numbers, and in the coming weeks there will no doubt be a number of sites hoping to highlight these points in one or more listicles. We probably haven’t covered everything, but there are four major takeaways from this news we felt were important to highlight here on the blog…

Despite streaming figures that might suggest otherwise, quality still trumps quantity when it comes to winning over consumers

25 is the first release from Adele in years. In the time since her last album the pop superstar has made it a point to keep details regarding new material to a minimum, and she has spent very little time fussing over social media or the way she is perceived in the press. In an age where almost every marketing book will tell you that developing and maintaining constant fan engagement is the key to success Adele has proven such efforts matter very little if you have quality music to share. She understand that no amount of marketing or witty public observations can compare to the selling power of a great song, so she chooses to focus her time on crafting the best new material possible. Everything else comes second, and because the quality of her work is so high fans are willing to accept this fact. More importantly, they are willing to pay to ensure it continues.

Word of mouth is everything

Adele only allowed a select number of critics to hear 25 in its entirety prior to release, and most did not share their reviews until he album was made available to the public, so it’s a little hard to say critical acclaim played any role in the album’s success. While I am confident Adele’s numerous appearances in the press did bring more attention to her new release than what would have existed if she had chosen to remain silent, the real motivating factor behind the initial album sales appears to have been the court of public opinion. People of all ages and races connect with Adele for one reason or another, and anytime she chooses to share new material there are people who are willing to share it with everyone they know. If fact, she doesn’t even have to ask for help. People share Adele’s music and videos because it makes them feel something they otherwise might not have felt, and they long to share that feeling with other people. As long as she continues to deliver powerful observations on life and love through music that trend will continue to develop, which means more and more people being exposed to her art.

Sticking with what has always worked instead of taking creative risks isn’t always such a bad idea.

I would never suggest someone try and force their creativity to fit one idea or style, but there is something to be said for choosing to master one sound instead of becoming sufficiently good at numerous styles of music. 25 is an album filled with the same grandiose ballads that have been found on all of Adele’s albums, and outside of the radio-ready pop sound of “Send My Love (To Your New Lover)” there are very few surprises on the record. For most artists that would be received by critics and fans as playing it safe, but I have seen very few people complain about what Adele has created with her new album. The only explanation is, again, that the quality of the material is so good it essentially voids most basic complaints. Would it be cool to hear Adele try something a bit more in the style of, say, Fleetwood Mac? Hell yes. Am I going to complain that power-ballads like “When We Were Young” were recorded instead? Hell no. Adele has made it a point to perfect her sound a bit more with each album, and that, to me, is just as exciting as taking risks.

Streaming may help sell records, or it may not.

Adele chose to keep 25 off of every streaming service on the planet, and there were many industry analysts who thought this might spell disaster for first week sales. Full album streams, they suggest, are what sells people on buying an album. They think music fans have become so fickle that they will not risk making a bad investment on an album they haven’t heard. While that may be true for some consumers, the success of 25 proves that many simply are not sold on certain artists’ ability to create an album filled with quality material. Most, it seems, are believed to be better at making singles.

I think it’s smart for all developing artists to make sure their initial recordings are available everywhere imaginable, but as their careers continues to develop they should continually reevaluate just what, if any, direct impact streaming has on their sales. Are you moving units on the strength of singles and digital promotion? If so, maybe there is no immediate rush to stream your first full length. What matters most is that you never take for granted what does and doesn’t work for your career. You and your music are unique, so you should never expect what works for others to also help your career.

Thinking Outside The EDM Box

In a post on Finnish music that went live last week we mentioned our desire to begin exploring areas of music beyond the scope of our Haulix staff. While we like to believe we know a lot about the inner-workings of the music business there is a veritable world of entertainment we know little about, including EDM.

With this in mind, we have begun reaching out to clients and talent with expertise in various areas of the industry in hopes of sharing a more complete image of life in the modern music business. The latest artist to accept our offer is King Complex, a genre-defying talent who has been working to innovate the world of EDM over the last several years. We asked King to explain how he plans to build on the sound he has been refining up to this point, and thankfully for us he was happy to oblige our request. You can find his thoughts, as well as a taste of his music, below.

When I first really started getting into guitar and playing music around the age of 15 I was heavy into the blues. I was digging Derek and the Dominoes, Buddy Guy, Stevie Ray Vaughn, etc. As a result of my influences I developed a very strict idea of what music is and how it’s brought to life. Shortly after I started getting deep into the guitar, something called dubstep showed up in the mainstream. People were buying systems for their cars and freaking out over a show where a guy stood behind a computer, I was far from amused. I went through the next four years very turned off from the idea of electronic music mostly due to misunderstandings and stubbornness. It wasn’t until I was about 19 that I changed my mind on the matter.

I went to Bonnaroo 2013 with the intention of seeing Paul McCartney and a good handful of other bands. I left Bonnaroo 2013 trying to get my hands on every Pretty Lights record I could find. I spent a long time thinking electronic music was cheating because of all the technology that can be used to correct mistakes and take the human quality out of music. I thought the live shows were an excuse for some egotistic producer to press play and fake a performance for people to lose their minds over. I was in the dark, but now I have seen the (pretty) light.

That Pretty Lights show and most of the shows I’ve gone to since have been unlike any other show i’ve experienced or music i’ve heard. The realization that this was something fresh and original was what opened my eyes to what I really loved about all the music I listened to before and the music I will listen to in the future, it was innovative. The blues players I liked were the ones who brought new elements to the game. The rockers I liked were the ones that brought such a variety of influences to an old formula that it sounded completely new. Without the manipulation of sound and technology we wouldn’t have a good chunk of what’s considered The Beatles best work.

Unless you want to listen to rip-offs of your favorite records or just spin the classics forever, electronic music is the future. It’s the biggest avenue toward originality in music. The idea of using a chord change that’s never been heard before is somewhat absurd, but new sounds have unlimited possibilites. These producers aren’t cheaters, but masters of technology, and explorers of new soundscapes. We also have to keep in mind that this style of making music hasn’t been in the mainstream for very long, there is still a lot of evolution left for the world of electronic music. I think we’ll see a drastic change before too long as more musicians come around to the idea. People still use the old formulas to make good music, but great art comes only with innovation.

The other aspect I want to discuss is the live show/culture, which seems to get a bad rep from a lot of “hipster” bashers. Granted we live at a time where people do things simply to be seen doing them, but who’s to say the flower power movement wasn’t made up of people also looking to join the next cool thing? This is an environment where individuality is flaunted with ridiculous antics and clothing, drugs are heavily associated with the scene, and it scares the old people who claim this is a passing fad (similar to the mindset of many adults in the 60’s regarding the electric guitar and guitar bands). The point I’m trying to make is that this closely resembles the origins of rock n roll and the movement that followed. Perhaps this is the millennial’s rock n roll.

MONDAY MOTIVATION: Ice Nine Kills

If you’re anything like me, you probably started the day by recognizing that the start of a new work week had indeed arrived and then immediately began shaking your fists at the sky in anger. Monday is rarely anyone’s favorite day, and from what I have seen firsthand it feels safe to say it’s the one day of the week some people outright hate. I guess to them the arrival of the work week symbolizes the end of their quote/unquote freedom, and as a result they head into the office/factory/restaurant/store with a negative outlook already on their mind. This leads to bad attitudes, which only makes the experience of being at work worse, and for some reason it also seems to make time slow to a crawl. We’re not about that life, and we hope this post can do the same you that the song contained within it did for us.

Before I was ever thought of as a music nerd I was a drama nerd. I was the kid in the back of his middle school math class who was repeatedly caught reading Arthur Miller’s Death Of A Salesman instead of learning long division, and while Math may still be difficult for me at times I have no regrets. Great dramatic writing is only made better with innovative musical accompaniment, and unfortunately there is very little of that to be found in the world of music today. The bands who do offer it however, are often so good you almost understand why aspiring musicians never even attempt to find a similar sound.

I probably couldn’t tell you the first band I discovered that used what I would describe as ‘theatrics’ in their music, but I remember thinking it would spawn a musical revolution. The avant-garde nature of larger than life rock and roll is something that has left me in awe all my life, and it continues to grab my ear even in today’s overcrowded music scene. I wish I had a good reason for this, but it’s simply what I like, and I think if you give it a chance you will grow to love it as well. That is, if you don’t already.

New England has been considered a hub for many alternative sounds over the last century, and thanks to a group called Ice Nine Kills the home of the Patriots and Red Sox is quickly becoming known for a new take on alternative music that has genre fans losing their damn minds. It’s theatric rock like My Chemical Romance or Coheed and Cambria might produce, but its influenced by a wide array of post-2000s punk music that gives the group an undeniable edge that is incredibly hard to deny. It’s as if they have stumbled on a way to meld aggression and dramatics without coming across as simply trying too hard to get attention, even though that is exactly what they will receive when their new album arrives in stores later this week.

Every Trick In The Book is a 10-song collection of material inspired by some of the greatest novels ever written. Each track is based on material found in a different literary classic, and they’re each performed in a theatrical style that is entirely the creation of Ice Nine Kills. It’s part punk and part metal, with just a dash of pop, and damn near overloaded with thick synth/keys to make the accompaniment a little more epic. I fell in love from the moment the first song hit my ears, and I have continued to fall deeper in love with each repeat listen over the last month. The album will not released until December 4, but you can get a taste right now:

A lot of the Monday Motivation posts I have written were born out of a deep connection to the material or artists mentioned, but this entry is a little different. I have no connection to the band, and I don’t think the music necessarily moves me on an emotional level, but something about Every Trick In The Book  keeps me coming back again and again. The fact music like this is not only being made, but produced by a band with very little money or fame, is a reminder to me that the best thing you can do in life is whatever feels best to you. Art should be a reflection of self, and in the case of Ice Nine Kills their art is an unabashed open door into their reality. It’s the kind of honesty I think we should all strive for in life and art, and I hope listening to it will inspire you as much as it has me in recent weeks.

Happy Thanksgiving

Hello, everyone!

We at Haulix know most of you are going to be busy with family today, but we wanted to take a moment to thank you for your continued support. We say that a lot, but honestly it’s never enough.

Haulix is a company run by a very small team of people who share a common desire to see artists and entertainment companies at every level of the music business succeed. We can’t make everyone a bestselling artist or a widely recognized record label, but we can simplify the promotional process and help keep media safe. We have dedicated our lives to doing those two things to the best of our abilities, and in the months ahead we will be furthering these efforts through a series of long-awaited, user requested updates to virtually all components of our platform. We know we have been teasing this for a few months, but we swear all will be reveled soon.

Your belief in our service has been apparent from day one, and in recent years the vocal support of our platform has been downright overwhelming. We are able to chase our dreams and do what we love because you trust us to help you chase your dreams, and for that we are forever grateful. So again, thank you for your support.

Happy Thanksgiving!

My Time In The Finnish Music Scene

Haulix is a company based out of Minnesota, USA. We have clients all over the world, but none of our core staffers have spent much, if any time abroad. We like to think we know a lot about the way the music business work, but truth be told all our knowledge is based on our experiences here in the United States. We wanted to expand our understanding of music as a global industry, so we turned to Finnish native Peppina to shed some light on her personal journey through music. You can read her response below.

Not familiar with Peppina? No worries. We’ve embedded here fantastic EP, Follow Your Gravity, at the end of this post. Consider this your last chance to hop on her bandwagon because we have a feeling 2016 is going to be a very big year for Peppina. Enjoy!

In Finland, just like in most countries, while the superstars in the world are superstars there as well, the charts are very much filled with Finnish artists – all of them singing in Finnish. That’s a big thing – there are barely any big Finnish artists in the pop field who perform in English, and it feels like some kind of a cultural thing where the idea of a Finnish artist singing in English seems weird.

I think it stems from the fact that i’s not that common in the Finnish culture to think or dream big, to believe in or seriously reach for international success – simply because it has happened so rarely in the past! I guess that’s why many choose to be a big fish in a small pond instead. To me that’s the biggest difference between the music scene in the two countries: In the US, you think big and reach high – and you have all the reason to do so since so many others have made it here already!

I think this cultural difference also translates to the musical side of it all. Pop music, for example, is produced big in the US. The singers bend high and lyrics are often anthemic, with subjects about things that are “larger than life.” While the top pop hits in Finland are of course also produced big and epic in their own way, they’re often not as ambitious as the ones in the States; the subjects are often negative and singers don’t show off with their vocal abilities as much. I couldn’t really say who would be “the Beyonce of Finland,” for example. I’m hoping to portray the best of both cultures through my music – and it’s been quite an experience being in the midst of each one at different times in my career.

November 24, 2015 | by Jonathan Diener I had a week off in Los Angeles and decided to catch up with as many of my friends as possible. As it turns out, a lot of people I grew up with in my travels are pretty successful in their respective crafts. GOOD READ: The End Of Music Blogs As We Know Them

We pride ourselves on creating some of the best content on the web regarding the state of music blogs, where they are headed, and how those interested can participate in their proliferation, but to be honest there are dozens of other outlets producing quality material on these same topics. One of them, Pigeons & Planes, is a favorite among our staff. We read a post from their founder last month regarding the state of music blogs in 2015, and we knew right away that we had to share his thoughts here on our site. Out of respect to the site and author, we decided to wait a full month before sharing some of his insight here.

Below you can find a large excerpt from the original P&P article. If you like what you read and you want to know the rest, please follow THIS LINK to the original post. Enjoy:

When I started Pigeons & Planes in 2008, I didn’t even know what the word “blog” meant. I only started the site because Eskay, from my favorite website Nah Right, stopped responding to my requests for a job. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. My marketing plan involved going to the most popular music videos on YouTube and commenting: “PIGEONS AND PLANES. GOOGLE IT!”

I have no idea if anyone found the blog that way. I still think it was a decent idea. Back then, things were different. This was before social media was the lifeblood of any online publication. Back then, a spot on a blogroll (remember those?) was more important than a social media presence. Back then, there was an actual community of music blogs. If I needed help setting up some new plug-in, I’d just email Modi from DC to BC, or Legend from OnSmash, or Will from We All Want Someone To Shout For, or Luis from Pretty Much Amazing. We all shared ideas, strategies, and, of course, music. Back then, if you wanted to keep up with hip-hop, you needed to follow Nah Right, 2DopeBoyz, XclusivesZone, and OnSmash.

In 2008, the small start-up blogs were the ones keeping up with music in real time. They were posting 20+ times a day, engaging with the latest social media communities, and covering new music with an urgency that the internet demands. The major publications still hadn’t caught up. They were focused on bigger projects with longer turnaround times. They had not yet learned to move at the speed of the internet. In 2008, I started Pigeons & Planes with no intentions or master plans. I had no resources, budget, or know-how, but I also didn’t have any old practices to unlearn.

That same year, Brendan Frederick, who was Deputy Editor of Complex at the time, called the entire Complex edit staff together and announced something that would immediately change the company forever: “You’re all bloggers now.”

For years, blogs dominated the music space on the internet. Among the larger media outlets, Complex was early to realize that they needed to change their ways if they wanted to keep up. It took a few years, but the entire business model changed.

“The reason Complex was able to succeed in the digital space when so many others failed,” Frederick explains, “is because Complex was smart enough to develop a real business model for making money off of the web—the media network. This allowed Complex to fund additional heads dedicated to the web, and made it less risky for them to divert editors’ attention away from the magazine. Other magazines didn’t change their business model—they stayed focused on selling print ads and doing events—so they didn’t have the cash to hire additional web staff, and couldn’t risk diverting attention from the print magazine. So, for these companies, the best they could do is have one or two separate ‘web editors’ focused on the website, but because they didn’t have the underlying revenue model, they could never fully make the shift.”
