Inside Music Podcast #125: From Ashes To New

Roughly three years ago, Inside Music host James Shotwell was attending a conference for aspiring music professionals when he received a hot tip from an industry contact. “You need to see this band,” they told him. “They are going to be the next big thing in rock.”

That band, as you can probably guess by now, was From Ashes To New. Formed in Pennsylvania, FATN delivers a hard-hitting sound that borrows from both the Warped Tour scene and more mainstream acts like Linkin Park. The final result is something wholly unique in the current music landscape, and we could not be more thrilled to share insight on how it all comes together through today’s episode of the podcast.

From Ashes To New’s latest album, The Future, is available wherever music is sold.

2017 Recorded Music Revenues (CHART)

2017 was a banner year for the global music industry. Music revenues reached $17.4 billion in 2017 in trade values, up from $16 billion in 2016, an annual growth rate of 8.5%. That $1.4 billion of growth puts the global total just below 2008 levels ($17.7 billion) meaning that the decline wrought through much of the last 10 years has finally come to an end.

Recently, MIDia compiled all the data related to 2017 music revenues to create the graphic you see above. The image represents how the industry’s massive year was divided amongst the various key players, as well as how little ultimately went to independent talent (2.7%, to be exact).

Where do we go from here? The future is not clear, but it is bright. The revenues in 2017 were higher than that of 2016, and pending some unforeseen setback the industry will likely continue to grow this year. Follow Haulix on Twitter for updates.

A beginner’s guide to producing quality music festival coverage

This post comes to us from Matt Leimkuhler, a writer for the Des Moines Register.

Ahhh. The ever-so formidable task of mastering festival coverage. It’s not easy, running around like a chicken with your head cut off for 12-18 hours on end — making sure every must-see band has been seen, every must-shake hand has been touched and every must-interview act has been chatted with. Not only must you balance every minute of your time and energy, but you must focus that energy to make sure you are creating better content than every other writer on the scene. What does it take for you to stand out during this festival season? Here are five questions I ask myself when going into all types of festivals:

1. What story hasn’t been told before?

Every blog, ‘zine and YouTube account is going to give you the typical, “Must See” lists for festivals, and this is okay. It’s cool to give your thoughts on what the standout acts are. But why not push this idea further? Instead of the “Five Must-See Acts at the Vans Warped Tour,” why not the “Five Songs to Crowd Surf to at the Vans Warped Tour?” Centralize your ideas — make your thoughts unique and insightful. This doesn’t need to pertain to solely preview content — think about different angles for every aspect of the festival.

2. What questions haven’t been asked yet?

If you’re interviewing a band on a festival bill, odds are the act is going through an extreme press run. Don’t waste the band’s time with monotonous questions the likes of “where did you get your band name?” or “how did you all meet?” Goodness, what a waste of time. You [probably] have a smartphone…Google different interviews, visit Wikipedia, or at least read the band’s bio before stepping into the box. Dig into insightful conversation with the musician and you all might actually learn something from one another. And better yet — the artist might actually want to work with you again in the future. A good musician always knows when you’re skidding through an interview and it is a bad reflection on everyone involved. Always do your homework. Don’t be afraid to step away from even insightful and traditional interviews to have a little fun with the artists. Does the band want to talk about the best food to eat on the road? Great! Grab that opportunity and create the best damn “must eat places according to this band” piece possible.

3. What can I do to stay ahead?

Okay: you’ve done amazing preview pieces, you’ve locked in the best interviews, you’ve relentlessly prepared for those interviews and you’ve just landed at the festival. What now? Staying ahead and in your element is tough. Typically, festivals offer the best distractions possible. Food, booze, after parties and sideshows are all fantastic for fans, but you’re at this festival to generate content. Stay in communication with your publicists or tour manager. Embrace the notion of being a public figure. Live tweet sets and daily agendas, reach out to other professionals you know will be in attendance and do your best to not make an ass of yourself (it happens to everyone at least once). Do daily write-ups and reviews of what you’re experiencing at the festival to give the outside world an idea of what’s taking place.  Make the most of every second. Stay focused and make great impressions but don’t forget to have fun and enjoy the fantastic music you’re getting to cover.

4. How do I sum it all up?

Congratulations, you killed your interviews and you made it home safely. Now, time for post-festival coverage. Again – tailor to your audience and strive to be unique in your post-festival coverage. Everyone will have a photo gallery and everyone will have the “best of” lists going live. Try to step back and think about the bigger picture. What really was the best part of the festival? Embrace the entire community you were apart of, not just the music. At this point of your coverage, more than ever, it’s time to be a journalist and tell a story.

5. What about next time?

Be sure to send the required follow up message upon returning home and be timely in turning your interviews around. Never take on too many interviews or you’ll dilute your product and slow down the process. Five well-thought out interviews stand out against fifteen half-hearted interviews any day. Make sure all of the appropriate parties know you are turning your content around in a timely fashion and thank them for the opportunity. Always be humble.

How to make the most of a festival performance

The temperatures are finally starting to rise, which means festival season is upon us. The popularity of music festivals has exploded over the last five years, and 2018 is shaping up to be the busiest season on record. Every week there are numerous events taking place all over the globe, each drawing thousands to see upwards of twenty, thirty, or even fifty artists. The competition for attention will be fierce, but if you start right now, you can use the exposure these events provide to your advantage.

Every festival is different, and depending on the genre you perform in the culture around the event may be somewhat unique as well. It is important to recognize that every festival has its own sense of community and vibe, which you should consider when planning your marketing efforts. That said, these 5 tips will help get you started:

Set goals now and begin working toward them immediately

Festivals are crazy places where thousands gather to enjoy art and consume overpriced food. The number of things vying for the attention and money of any one person is too high to count, but you can take a step toward cutting through the noise by setting goals for your time on-site as soon as possible. These goals should be reasonable and achievable. For example, you’re not going to make 10,000 new fans, but you could plan to distribute 500 promotional items and sell X amount of merchandise. You could also plan to engage with fans by hosting a gathering or hangout at your tent that you promote in the weeks leading up to the event. Anything goes, just keep it simple.

Work the line or, if a line does not exist, simply engage festival goers

The hours before your performance should be spent on promotion. Most smaller artists playing festivals will have sets early in the day, which means those performing will have to work hard to get those unfamiliar with their sounds to show up. The best approach to making this happen is also the most personable one. Get out there, shake some hands, give some hugs, share your tunes via a mobile device, and ask people (politely) to consider checking you out.  Not everyone will come, but those that do could easily be converted into new, long-term fans.

Network your ass off

In addition to offering small acts the chance to say they played with some of the biggest names in entertainment, festivals also provide an opportunity for up and comers to network with people who may be able to help them both nationally and far more locally. Festival sponsors, for example, are often companies and people who fund a wide variety of music-related projects. They also tend to know others who do the same, which means they or someone they know could probably help you get ahead if they like what you do. While the same can be said for artists, most up and comers never think to approach the sponsors, and they are arguably far more likely to take a genuine interest in what you do. Don’t let the opportunity to meet with the movers and shakers of your community pass.

Instagram stories / Live

To make the most of a festival appearance, you have to find the best way to bring the experience of that show to those unable to attend. Instagram’s Stories feature and live streaming capabilities make it ideal for bringing your global audience into the festival experience. Share images, videos, and Boomerang clips from your initial practice sessions through the event. Showcase your load in, merch setup, merch location, and – of course – clips of the set.

You may also consider pitching an ‘Instagram takeover’ to a music publication. Sites often allow artists to control their Story feed for a single, twenty-four hour period. This will allow you access to their audience, which in turn creates the potential to convert new consumers to your music.

Consider a Snapchat Geofilter

Snapchat is one of the most popular messaging apps on the planet, and the company’s recent decision to allow practically anyone to create custom geofilters has given artists of all sizes a new tool in the war for consumers’ attention. Fans can capture your performance, or even just their time at the event, and use your filter to promote the experience to their followers. Rates for geofilters start as low as $10 (cost varies based on length of campaign and size of the area you want to be covered).

Market your upcoming gigs

People who enjoy your performance will likely be interested in seeing you again, so make it a point to advertise where you will be next during your time at a festival. This includes mentioning gigs during your performance and through one on one engagement at your merch table. You should also collect email addresses so you can remind new listeners of upcoming events once their festival buzz has worn off.

Want to build your portfolio? Write for The 405!

The internet is filled with music blogs that promise to help aspiring professionals get their foot in the door of the industry. Most of these blogs cannot actually guarantee exposure to the movers and shakers of the business, nor can they promise contributors will ever see a return for their work. The terms ‘credit’ and ‘exposure’ are often included in pitches from these sites as if your mounting student loan debt can be paid by such things, but in reality, it’s all a ploy. Sites like that want, no, need free help to continue shoveling out content that is immediately forgotten because they lack both an original voice and audience. They’re scrambling for clicks, and by working for them, you will only end up doing the same.

The 405 is something else. Run by actual professionals who know a thing or two about how the industry works, The 405 has been delivering quality content to music fans around the globe for years. The site has been home to dozens of writers who have gone on to contribute to Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, and other leading publications, as well as contributors who would later find work in the business side of music. Learn to control your high

There are a lot of bad things said in regards to the music business and how it can sometimes appear to be an endless party where adults can act like perpetual children as long as actual young people continue to support their craft. There may be some truths to that, but as a whole, the industry is filled with people who know how to focus when it counts. That doesn’t mean the temptation to indulge does not exist, nor does it suggest that professionals always refrain. If anyone knows how to have a good time it’s music professionals, but it’s how people handle those moments that determines their career trajectory.

Commit this to memory: Control your high.

What is a high? A high is anything you do to cut loose. That can be drinking, smoking marijuana, eating fast food, combining all three, or doing something else entirely that makes you feel good and helps you unwind. Whatever that thing is that you think of when work is at its worst, that is your high.

A high can be good. Everyone deserves to relax and have a little fun after working hard. As long as no one gets hurt, including the individual, people should be able to do whatever they please to enjoy life a bit.

The problem is, not everyone can control their high, and some find themselves in a losing battle with the thing they thought was an aide. Addiction is a beast like no other. It has claimed countless industry lives, both on the artist and professional side. Attached to the monster, but also a creature in its own right is depression. There are more killers out there, but these two are in a league of their own, and many see the opportunities working in the music industry presents as a means to ignore the pain in their lives.

Let’s be clear: You should have a good time. There are perks to working in entertainment, and one of them is the opportunity to experiment with a variety of lifestyles and behavior.

If you want to drink, you should drink.

If you want to smoke, you should smoke.

If you want to do anything that does not harm yourself or others, that is your decision.

AND – If you want to success in business and live a long life, you must learn to do all these things in moderation.

You have to control your high because you cannot afford to have it control you, and that is what will happen. If you are lucky, there will be people along the way who help keep you on track, but you could as easily meet people who encourage behavior detrimental to your well being. You have to look out for you. Your life depends on it.

You need a ‘When-Then’ plan. Here’s why:

There are few feelings better than the sensation you get when you’re about to explore a new idea. Creativity, of any kind, is a rush unlike any other, and far too many of us are forced to suppress original thinking throughout the majority of the day because our current careers do not fall in line with who or what we aspire to become. Most people find they need to set aside time outside their 9-5 to try exploring any creative endeavor, but following through is much easier said than done.

There is a great and frustrating old saying, “Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans.” Maybe you hope to dedicate an hour a day to doing something creative, and perhaps for the first few days or weeks, that goal is reasonably easy to meet. Inevitably, however, a day will come when something happens to break your newly established routine:

  • A late night out causes you to sleep in
  • A child, pet, or loved one falls ill and needs you to help care for them
  • Your job demands you spend more time at the office
  • A family event (birth, death, etc.). unexpectedly occurs
  • That little voice inside that tells you there is no chance you will succeed convinces you not to take a day off
  • Your alarm doesn’t go off

There are countless reasons why our best made plans go awry, both big and small. When those things happen, our new routine of purposefully setting aside time to create is jeopardized, it can be incredibly hard to get ourselves back on the right track. We tell ourselves that people meant to succeed would never allow themselves to slip so easily. We tell ourselves we cannot trust ourselves to chase our dreams. We tell ourselves we are not deserving of aspiring to or becoming something greater than what we war and we are wrong for doing so.

Everyone fails. Everyone has setbacks and unexpected turns that throw their lives into chaos. There is no perfect plan for dealing with life’s ability to spin out of control at any given moment, and there never will be. What separates those who rise above the hurdles of existence and those who do not is something relatively simple: Those who succeed have a when-then plan.

What is a when-then plan?

When-then plans are a system of checks and balances that ensures creative people do not lose focus when life throws them curveballs. Let me give you an example:

“WHEN I am unable to spend an hour writing in the morning (or any time at all), THEN I will spend five minutes reviewing my recent creative output in the evening and deciding how I’ll work the next day.”

Here’s another:

“WHEN I know I will be unable to spend any time being creative in the more the morning of evening THEN I will take 10-minutes out of my lunch to write, draw, or otherwise express myself.”

When-then plans do not make up for the hour of time you lost, but it does keep you connected to your creativity and your goals when you do not have time to work on them. So much of the reasoning behind why we lose connection to our goals when we start becoming increasingly busy is that we allow ourselves to stop thinking about them. We push our future ambitions out of our mind to focus on an immediate need or problem, and in doing so, we make it incredibly hard to pull those thoughts and ideas back into the realm of possibility.

The lost time is still a downer, but by having a then-when system in place, you can still make personal progress on a daily basis. Taking a step back from your work before reviewing it can help you be more reasonably critical of your efforts. These short sessions of review can help you readjust your focus and more precisely plan your future timeline, which will account for the time lost to the demands of the day/week/etc.

New habits are only good intentions until you have a when-then plan in place, and that plan is only good when you put it into use. Do not let life convince you that you will never be more than what you are right now because that is a lie. You can aspire to something greater, and there is a way to get there as long as you’re willing to put in the work.
