Inside Music Podcast #170: The Menzingers

After thirteen years in the cutthroat alternative music scene, The Menzingers are riding high on a wave of great music and high praise.

There is no other band like The Menzingers. For over a decade, The Menzingers have been writing narrative-driven punk music that is both incredibly specific and universally relatable. Their songs toe the line between nostalgia and wanderlust with a precision unmatched by their peers and envied by younger generations. The band grows better with each release, and their new album, Hello Exile, is no exception.

On this episode of Inside Music, host James Shotwell sits down with guitarist and vocalist Tom May to discuss what makes The Menzingers one of rock’s most reliable groups. Tom tells James about his memories from the band’s earliest recordings, as well as what fans can expect from their latest material. Then the conversation transitions to the group itself, detailing the interpersonal relationships that have helped the group keep their heads above water all these years.

Hello Exile will hit stores on October 6 via Epitaph Records.

Spotify surpasses 230 million monthly users, 108 million subscribers

In a new call with investors, Spotify revealed continued, if slow, growth.

It’s good to be king. Spotify was the first to make a big splash with music streaming, and their early entry into the marketplace helped propel the Swedish company to the top of the food chain. These days, the term Spotify has become synonymous with streaming. “You can find them on Spotify” means, “you can stream their music online.” That’s an excellent place to be, and the latest stats for the music company show the good times are far from over.

Spotify held its Q2 earnings call with investors earlier this week. During the update, the company announced it had passed 232 million monthly active users, up 29% since this time last year. Spotify also boasts 108 million paid subscribers, up 31% year over year. An infographic detailing all the latest developments at the company was also released. Check it out:

The biggest announcements of Spotify’s Q2 earnings report.

Apple Music is Spotify’s closest competitor. At the beginning of July, Apple Music announced it had just surpassed the 60 million subscriber mark, which leaves Spotify with a substantial lead. However, the new data from Spotify reveals a slowing adoption rate for subscribers. The cause for that slowdown is not clear, but market saturation and increased competition are two likely factors contributing to the change.

Spotify has a lot of developments on the horizon that the company hopes will raise the growth rate, including additional podcast content and a device for automobiles that will eliminate the need for terrestrial radio in vehicles. You can learn more about the device, which has been dubbed the ‘car thing,’ in the Music Biz News clip below.

Music Marketing 101: Work The Line

Clever digital marketing will get you far in the music business, but creative real-world marketing still matters.

Waiting in lines is an essential part of the live music experience. Be it a club show or an arena gig; music fans stand in lines to enter virtually every show they attend. The most dedicated followers often line up hours before anyone else to ensure they get to stand as close to their musical heroes as possible. That kind of devotion is an essential part of fandom, and it provides up and coming musicians a great opportunity to build their following.

When tours come through your region with lineups that relate to the music you perform, you should be working the line. In the simplest terms, working the line refers to a face-to-face promotional effort where musicians engage with music fans waiting to attend a show. It’s simple, effectively free, and can yield new followers of your career.

Many musicians work the line in three simple ways:

  1. The performers carry signs or wear shirts promoting their music. That way, everyone who sees them also sees their logo.
  2. Musicians will often carry a phone or portable MP3 player with high quality (over the ear) headphones. With each person they encounter, the musician will ask them to give their music a chance. They will also have CDs and download cards available for anyone who may feel compelled to make a purchase on the spot.
  3. After sharing their music, artists will ask consumers to sign up for their mailing list or to follow them on social media. That way, everyone who takes an interest in their music is contacted at least one additional time in the future.

Some musicians think outside the box. Recently, I was walking by a venue in Grand Rapids, MI, when I spotted the following message written in chalk under an overpass:

Grand Rapids’ rapper Beatrat has the right idea when it comes to music promotion.

When fans line up for shows at that venue, the crowd often stretches under that same overpass. Considering there are no billboards or businesses in that space, this message from Beatrat is likely to garner some attention. It may not be pretty and it may not be the best possible representation of the music, but it is effective.

If you’re not working the lines outside venues in your area to promote your music then you letting dozens or more potential fans slip through your fingers. Step outside your comfort zone, learn how to talk about your music, and put yourself out there.

How To Get A Record Deal in 2019 [VIDEO]

With the music industry changing faster than ever, record labels are being more particular about the artists they offer deals.

Last week, the Haulix team traveled to Los Angeles for a series of meetings with some of our favorite labels and industry professionals. We met with Hopeless Records, Pure Noise Records, Metal Blade Records, Prosthetic Records, and more. We covered a number of topics related to the music business, but there was one question we asked everyone:

What does it take to get a record deal in 2019?

We expected different answers from different labels, as they each have a specific niche of music they cater to, but the responses were mostly universal. Everyone agrees that you need talent above all else, but they believe talent alone is not enough. In the age of the internet, writing good songs and getting people to listen to them is the bare minimum an artist should be able to accomplish on their own. That kind of work ethic will start to create a conversation around your music, but again, that alone is not enough to get signed.

So, what does it take?

The music business is changing, and so is the type of artists who get signed. Labels are no longer able to take risks on everyone who creates a viral hit or knows how to write catchy songs. To stand out from the competition today, musicians need more than talent. Much more, in fact, and in this episode of Music Biz 101, host James Shotwell reveals what the biggest labels in music are looking for in the musicians they sign.

Three common marketing mistakes artists make online [VIDEO]

Digital marketing is an essential element of music business success, and there are certain things everyone must do to get ahead.

Music is all about self-expression. A great song can tell the world who you are, what you feel, and what you believe matters most in life. That same material can make an impact on listeners that literally changes how they see the world around them. Music is a wonderful thing in that way, but to reach people, you need to know how to market your creativity.

Digital marketing is the backbone of music promotion today. It is impossible to imagine an artist getting ahead without having a strong presence online. Before you can reach the masses with your ideas, however, there are a few essential marketing concepts you need to understand.

First and foremost, consistent branding is what separates musicians people remember from the ones who are forgotten. There are way more good musicians no one remembers than there are great musicians everyone can easily recognize. The reasons for this are numerous, but more often than not, branding is at the center of it all. A great brand makes you seem more professional, more talented, and altogether better.

As for the other two elements, you’ll need to watch the latest episode of our video series, Music Biz 101. Embedded below, the video finds host James Shotwell breaking down the essential elements of successful digital marketing that many artists overlook when attempting to promote themselves online.

Don’t allow yourself to become another musician no one remembers. Watch this episode of Music Biz 101 and get to work!

PSA: Your band does not belong on LinkedIn

LinkedIn is the place where professionals from every industry connect, but the platform has nothing to offer groups trying to promote their new release.

Social media plays an essential role in music today. Every artist has at least one account. Most have several, and if they’re smart, they create unique content for each.

Gary Vaynerchuk, one of the web’s most prolific business strategists, says people should share 100 pieces of content per day on social media. That is a lot of work, especially if you are creating content for platforms with nothing to offer your career.

LinkedIn is no place for bands. Musicians balancing their passion for performance with the need to work a day job may find it useful for networking, but it is no place for music promotion.

That should be obvious. No aspect of LinkedIn or its marketing is meant to engage musicians. Some could argue it barely engages the music industry at large. Still, not a week goes by without musicians — or worse, bands — send invitations to industry professionals at all levels of the business.

This does not convey “I understand the internet.”

Using LinkedIn to promote your music with a profile could even be detrimental to your career. Label executives and A&R reps are seeking talent that knows how to leverage social media for success. A profile on LinkedIn for your music career reveals a lack of understanding. It says, “Hey world, I’m flailing. Please give me attention because I don’t know how to capture your eyes and ears.”

Instead of adding more social media profiles to your brand, focus your efforts on the platforms where people are already engaging with your music and similar artists. Specifically, work on maximizing your presence on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram before going anywhere else. That is where the online masses are engaging with content, and that is where the chance of discovery is highest.

The difference between music professionals and amateurs

There is one thing that separates music professionals from hobbyists and amateurs: Their willingness to work.

No two words are more frequently uttered by aspiring music professionals than “I’m gonna.” This fact is not based on science, nor is the second word even technically a word, but fifteen years of industry chats have proven it correct nonetheless. Aspiring professionals love to talk about what they’re ‘gonna’ do. The bands they’re gonna work with, the show they’re gonna go to, the story they’re gonna write, etc.

No one cares about what you’re gonna do. Everyone cares about you’re doing right now.

The main difference between amateurs and professionals is a willingness to do the work required to reach the position they desire. Great ideas and a desire to good for others in music alone are not enough. True professionals put action behind their thought, and they do so without having to be given permission or motivation from the outside world.

The pursuit of dreams alone is not enough. Everyone is chasing a dream. Everyone wishes to be something more than what they are right now. The problem is most folks stop at wishing. To break from the herd and separate yourself as a professional, you have to be willing to dig and do the work. It’s both as simple and as complicated as that.

If you don’t know where to begin, turn to someone who does. Find a professional doing the job you’d like to have and express your interest in the business. Research on your own as well (no one wants to hear questions that Google can answer).

Start with a single decision: Today will be different. Star there and make good on it. With a little time and a lot of hard work, making moves on your own will become second nature. Others will soon take notice, and life will change, but that only happens if you take it upon yourself to do the work.

Inside Music Podcast #169: Static-X (Tony Campos)

Discussing everything from Wisconsin Death Trip to the legacy of Wayne Static, Static-X bassist Tony Campos stops by Inside Music to share his unique journey in music.

Most artists dream of writing one song that captures the attention of other people. If they can accomplish that, those same artists may dream of doing it again, and again, until one day they release an album. That album will determine the trajectory of their career, as will everything that happens after the record is in stores. There are no guarantees in music. The most successful artists know this is true, and they never forget it.

Static-X did not plan on being together in 2019. If you could return to 1994 and tell the four-piece metal band a record they would release in 1999 would become an iconic piece of work they would probably laugh. Wisconsin Death Trip is a gem of the industrial metal genre. Two decades after its release, people are still falling in love with the album’s hard-hitting sound.

In 2014, Static-X unexpectedly lost founding member and vocalist Wayne Static. The news hit hard with fans and members alike, leading many to believe the band was as good as dead. Five years later, however, the group is back in action.

The Wisconsin Death Trip twentieth-anniversary tour is currently entertaining sold-out crowds across America. Static-X has not replaced Static. Instead, the band is collaborating with a mysterious vocalist called Xer0 who wears a Static mask on stage. The vocals are similar enough to embody the spirit of the original material, all while keeping the legacy of Static front and center.

Recently, Static-X bassist Tony Campos sat down with Inside Music host James Shotwell to discuss the band’s unlikely reunion. Campos revealed the hard work that went into the band’s new tour, as well as the group’s plans to continue celebrating Static’s life through music. You can stream the conversation below.
