Bandcamp Fridays Extended Through The Rest of 2020

With $20 million already given to artists and labels over four months, Bandcamp Fridays are becoming a monthly event the industry depends on to stay afloat.

At this point in 2020, it is safe to say that Bandcamp has done more to keep the music industry alive than the federal government.

When the coronavirus pandemic began to spread in March, Bandcamp chose one day, a Friday, set aside its share of revenues from sales on its platform to help artists in need. The response was so strong that Bandcamp made the event a monthly occurrence, and the four Bandcamp Fridays to date have raised more than $20 million for musicians from all walks of life.

With government assistance still nowhere to be found, Bandcamp has announced that Bandcamp Fridays will continue throughout the remaining months of 2020.

“Because the pandemic is far from over, we’ll continue to hold Bandcamp Fridays on the first Friday of every month until the end of the year,” Bandcamp wrote on its official website. The calendar dates for 2020’s remaining Bandcamp Fridays are: August 7th, September 4th, October 2nd, November 6th, and, just in time for the holidays, December 4th.

While Bandcamp Fridays alone have greatly helped the independent music community, the generous campaign has also led to a boost in overall sales on the website. “… Just as amazing is that since the pandemic hit in March, fans have bought more than $75 million worth of music and merch directly from artists and labels, and to date, fans have paid artists over half a billion(!) dollars on Bandcamp.”

It’s No-Fee Friday On Bandcamp. Buy These 6 Releases

The popular digital music store and streaming platform Bandcamp is waving any claim to revenue generated through its store to support artists during COVID-19.

The bright side of living in the age of coronavirus is that many people and companies are going out of their way to help those in need. For example, millions of dollars and non-perishable goods have been donated around the world to help anyone unable to buy feed and pay their bills. Acts of loving-kindness are what make the direst circumstances seem manageable, and luckily, Bandcamp is doing what it can to help musicians while touring is on hold.

Today, May 1, Bandcamp is waiving its claim to any revenue generated on its platform. Bandcamp ran the same promotion on March 20, which generated millions of dollars for labels and independent artists who are currently unable to tour.

To be clear: Every cent spent on Bandcamp today will go directly to musicians in need. Considering that no one knows when live music will return anywhere, let alone when touring can happen again, your support of independent music is desperately needed.

Bandcamp has incredible discovery tools that will help you find new music that matches your interest, but if you’re open to suggestions, we have a few recommendations:

Anthony Green – Live From The Social (Stream It/Buy It)

Circa Survive frontman Anthony Green has built a thriving solo project over the last twelve years that has produced numerous beloved albums. To celebrate Bandcamp’s COVID-19 fundraiser, Green is kicking off a new bootleg series of live recordings with audio from a 2016 concert at The Social in Orlando, FL. The sixteen-track digital release features songs from Green’s catalog and the joyous sounds of a packed room singing along as loud as possible.

Also Also Also – The Good Grief (Stream It/Buy It)

The second full-length album from Canada’s Also Also Also does not disappoint. The haunting vocals of Eden Rohatensky pair perfectly with their hypnotic synth production to create a deeply moving collection of songs that seek answers to existential questions about the nature of love and death. Answers are few and far between, but the journey is one you will want to take again and again.

Hot Mulligan – Opportunities (Stream It/Buy It)

Before they were internationally known as the #1 Hot New Band, Michigan’s Hot Mulligan were building their brand one fan at a time with unique songs that challenged pop-punk traditionalists and captivated young music fans. The group’s early releases speak to the members’ passion and devotion with big hooks that no listener can ever shake (“Dary” is a standout). Opportunities is just one of multiple early releases available on the Hot Mulligan page, but it happens to be our personal favorite. Buy as many as you can. The band deserves it, and so do you.

Killswitch Engage – Atonement II (Stream It/Buy It)

Bandcamp’s decision to help those in need is inspiring musicians to follow its lead. Killswitch Engage is sharing six (6) b-sides from their 2019 release Atonement for one week only to raise money for charity. The tracks deliver the same ferocious energy fans have come to expect, with frontman Jesse Leach delivering hopeful, yet grounded lyrics over thunderous production that will incite mosh pits around the world. It’s unclear if the band will perform these songs when live music returns, but the strength of the material gives us hope at least a few will appear in future setlists.

Straylight Run – Live At The Patchogue Theatre (Stream It/Buy It)

The vast majority of musicians record more often than fans realize. From demos and b-sides that never make it to the public, to live recordings from various tours that get lost in the gears of the industry, the annals of music history are filled with material the majority of listeners never get a chance to hear. Live At The Patchogue Theatre was almost a lost release. Recorded fifteen years ago when Straylight Run was at the height of their career, this incredible performance captures a moment in time when emotion and lyricism meant everything to alternative music fans. Over the course of eleven tracks, listeners can hear the group deliver one soul-stirring rendition after another of songs that deserve more love and attention than they may ever receive. It’s a testament to how great songwriting never ages and a reminder of why we need to preserve the live music experience for future generations

If that isn’t enough to move you, Straylight Run is donating 100% of the proceeds from the live LP to help feed the hungry. Help them help others and get a great release in return.

Witch Taint – Sons of Midwestern Darkness (Stream It/Buy It)

Inside every person is the knowledge they are unique. Many try to squash this notion in hopes of fitting in with the masses, but others choose to use what sets them apart to their advantage. Witch Taint is an example of how leveraging the things that make us different ultimately makes the world a better place. Sons Of Midwestern Darkness is an album that took sixteen years to exist, and it showcases the very best elements of black metal and heavy music in a manner few records can claim. It’s the kind of release that seems to know your life before you hear it, and it’s likely to be the soundtrack to existence for many moving forward. Witch Taint is the future, and the future is brutal as fuck.

Bandcamp users spent over $4.3 Million to support artists in one day

Bandcamp waived its share of the revenue earned from song and album sales last Friday.

In these uncertain times, it is good to know there are people in the world who are passionate about helping musicians get ahead. Touring right now is impossible, and streams are declining, but last Friday, album sales for indie artists were up in a big way thanks to Bandcamp.

As previously reported, Bandcamp waived its share of any revenue generated through its platform last Friday, March 20. The one-day promotion was part of a global effort to support independent musicians struggling to pay bills in light of Covid-19. Artists and labels alike promoted the initiative, as did several high-profile publications, and fans, thankfully, came out to show their support.

The numbers tell a remarkable story: on a typical Friday, fans buy about 47,000 items on Bandcamp, but this past Friday, fans bought nearly 800,000, or $4.3 million worth of music and merch. That’s more than 15 times the service’s Friday, and at the peak, fans were buying 11 items per second.

A post announcing the sales figure on the Bandcamp blog made it clear the platform is far from over supporting its artists. It reads:

“We don’t yet know the long-term impact of Covid-19, but we know that we all need music—to uplift and inspire us, to heal us, and to give us hope. We’ll continue working to make Bandcamp the best place for fans and artists to come together and sustain each other in the challenging times ahead. Thank you again, and we wish you all good health!”

It’s hard to emphasize the importance of buying music and merch from artists during this difficult time enough. As we mentioned in our Music Biz video series, streaming numbers are down across the industry, which means artists are seeing less revenue from consumption that unusual. Supporting musicians through the purchase of music and merchandise is the best way to help artists pay their bills and continue creating music.

Bandcamp Waiving Revenue Share On All Sales This Friday, March 20

Bandcamp is taking significant steps to support its massive community by waiving its claim to any revenue generated through sales this Friday.

With touring made impossible by the spread of Covid-19, musicians and the music industry behind them are depending on fans to stream and buy music in the weeks (possibly months) ahead. There have already been calls for Spotify to help artists by increasing its royalty rates, but the Swedish company has remained silent on the matter. Thankfully, one streaming service is getting behind the talent that makes its platform possible.

Bandcamp will waive all revenue shares this Friday, March 20. A statement from the company sent to members of the media this morning, March 19, reads:

“The Covid-19 pandemic has hit artists especially hard as tours and shows are canceled for the foreseeable future. To help support those impacted, we’re waiving our revenue share on all sales this Friday, March 20, from midnight to midnight PST. If you are able, please join us in putting some much needed money directly into artists’ pockets.”

In the simplest terms, every dollar spent on Bandcamp this Friday, March 20, will go directly to musicians. If you spend five dollars on a new release, the artist responsible for that record will receive all five dollars.

This week has been incredibly tricky for countless industry professionals, and there are no signs of relief on the horizon. The self-isolation and quarantines required to stop the spread of Covid-19 could very well stretch into June or July, if not longer. Couple that information with the knowledge most musicians are unable to work their “day jobs” because the service industry has also shut down, and you have a recipe for stress that will affect many, if not all, of the artists you love.

If you have money to spend right now, please consider buying music on Bandcamp this Friday. If you don’t have the cash to spare, please continue streaming music whenever possible. Every stream and every cent matters. Do your part, and together, we can make it through this turbulent time.

Bandcamp launches ‘Kickstarter for vinyl’ pressing service

Vinyl sales have surged in recent years, but cost of pressing remains high. Could Bandcamp’s new service be the solution DIY artists need?

Bandcamp has announced a new service that allows artists to launch crowdfunding campaigns for vinyl releases. Once a campaign reaches its minimum goal, Bandcamp will press and ship the vinyl record directly to fans, which saves artists time and lowers the risk involved in vinyl production. Artists will maintain full control of the record’s design as well as its price, though the cost will depend on the design, number of discs required, quality of sound, and other factors. The service—which aims to streamline the “financing, production, and fulfillment of vinyl records”—is set to launch for all artists and labels later this year.

The ‘Kickstarter for vinyl’ service was revealed by Bandcamp earlier this week. In the post, Bandcamp stated that sales of vinyl records on the service have grown 600% in the last five years, and every month another 3,500 unique vinyl albums are added to the site. While that figure is impressive, the announcement also says that only 9% of the albums with sales on Bandcamp in 2018 offered a vinyl version. The company hopes their new service will encourage more artists to explore vinyl pressing, as well as offer fans a chance to fund new pressings of records that may otherwise never be pressed again.

The reasons more DIY and independent artists don’t press vinyl are numerous, but cost is the biggest factor. A run of 500 records can easily costs thousands to press, and that isn’t accounting for postage to ship the albums to fans or the cost of packaging for those shipments. That price is too high for many artists, especially when it means taking a change that fans will actually buy the album once it is complete. Bandcamp’s service not only streamlines production and distribution, but it eliminates the risk factor entirely by funding production through fans. The worst that can happen is that a campaign does not raise the funds required for production, in which case an artist will have to rely on other means of getting physical media to fans.

To showcase their new service, Bandcamp has announced its first four vinyl campaigns: Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah’s Ancestral RecallJim Guthrie’s Below (Original Soundtrack)Juliette Jade’s Constellation, and Mesarthim’s Ghost Condensate. You can view the campaigns by clicking the links in this story, and you can view the proposed products by visiting Bandcamp’s official blog.

Bandcamp launched its first brick and mortar store earlier this year. Whether or not releases funded through its new service will appear in the shop remains to be seen.

How To Give Away Your Music (7 Methods Reviewed)

Longtime Haulix contributor Andrew Jones has done a ton of research regarding the best methods of giving away music for free so you could read his work and get back to creating your art. If you love the article below, please check out Andrew’s own website and consider hiring him for your future management needs.

Free music giveaways can be an important part of a marketing strategy these days. However if you go this route you are going to want to think through your options carefully. The first step is to determine your goals. Are you looking to:

a) Give a gift to your fans
b) Expand your e-mail list
c) Grow your exposure
d) Get some revenue via tips
e) Other

Depending what you are looking for there are several options. After some research here are all the “major” options I have come across. There may be others, but remember the more you have to teach your fans, the fewer of them are going to convert to actual downloads. If you know of any other great options, I’d love to hear about them!

NoiseTrade

If you have followed this blog for long you will know I am a big fan of Noisetrade. The system works nearly perfectly. You give out a URL when your fans follow it they get a really pro looking page. Hit download, enter their e-mail and postal code and are immediately sent an email with a download link.Fans are also given the option to “tip” you for your music which you can keep or give away to charity from their system.

Added Pros:

  • You get an e-mail address and postal/zip code with every download. If you are smart about adding them to your e-mail list and tracking postal codes, this is invaluable to your tour marketing.
  • An added bonus is that they have a chart on the front of their page (which is quite popular) which gets additional exposure across the world.
  • It’s incredibly easy for fans to share the page to other potential downloaders
  • There are nice looking embeddable widgets

Cons:

  • At this time there is not a great discovery system on Noisetrade. There are several curated albums featured every week, but there I feel there could be a stronger “related artists system” especially since they have now added fan accounts.

Bandcamp

Bandcamp is essentially built around sales, however they do have a free download option as well. Again in exchange for an email. You give out a URL when fans follow it they are taken to a page with a “buy now” link and asked to name their price (if you set it up as pay-what-you-want). After that thy are directed through a shopping cart and soon receive the files via e-mail.

Added Pros:

  • The “pay what you want” language generally leads to better sales.
  • They have a robust charting system
  • It’s easy to re-direct fans to other albums
  • Lots of high quality file options

Cons:

  • The charts aren’t featured very prominently.
  • I don’t feel like the system encourages fans to share as much as it could

Soundcloud

One of the biggest music sites on the planet that allows both streaming and downloads. It requires very little from the customer. The site is reasonable intuitive, though there are lots of buttons like repost, add to playlist, etc. that could distract from the download. Again it’s a simple URL to send out. They click the button and receive instant MP3 download.

Added Pros:

  • Soundcloud is a social network in and of itself with a MASSIVE following, especially in the hip-hop and EDM worlds.
  • Many people look at Soundcloud stats as an indicator of a band’s popularity.
  • It’s easy to include a large catalogue of material.
  • Great looking embed options.

Cons:

  • There is no direct way to convert those downloads into sales.
  • You receive no fan data (such as emails, location, etc.) without a pro account, and even then it’s fairly limited.
  • You cannot set up to allow fans to download a full album, each track needs to be clicked on separately.

ReverbNation

The download process on ReverbNation is a little different than the URL you give out will lead to your artist page not individual downloadable music. Then they see a list of songs (no album differentiation) and a bunch of them have a Download button. They can click on each song individually to download.

Added Pros:

  • ReverbNation rankings can give you a warm feeling in your belly
  • There is certainly a crowd who routinely finds their new music through ReverbNation

Cons:

  • Very few professionals consider ReverbNation stats a major factor.
  • For people who aren’t used to the site all the buttons and dongles can distract them from the download options
  • You cannot set up to allow fans to download a full album, each track needs to be clicked on separately.

BitTorrent

Thom Yorke (of Radiohead) made headlines last year distributing his album through BitTorrent. I think there is a TON of potential for other artists to grow in this area, but for this style of promotion I think the torrenting process is still a little above the average consumer. It requires downloading a torrent link, using a separate torrent client software…etc.

Added Pros:

  • You can also add pay gates to packages
  • If the torrenting community really embraces you…you are gold.
  • You are not limited in what goes into your package. Bio, video, music, whatever you want!
  • I’ve heard nothing but great things about working with the BitTorrent team.

Cons:

  • Many people aren’t familiar with torrenting and may get lost in the process.

Dropbox

Hypothetically, you could give away an album out through Dropbox. Fans would receive the (complicated) link (https://www.dropbox.com/sh/j43qv1p9vuivcjy/AADgyC1mMv8UAr0VDhWxUOEQb), they hit download. They now have a zip file with the album.

Added Pros:

  • Most people have heard of dropbox.
  • You can add anything in that folder

Cons:

  • As Dropbox wasn’t created for this type of function you may run into troubles with files/bandwidth/crashes etc.
  • You receive no fan data (such as emails, location, etc.)
  • There is no direct way to convert those downloads into sales. Or allow fans to tip etc.

Self Hosted ZIP

On your own website you can easily host a download link. If you have fairly basic knowledge of website building you can easily add something to the backend of your own site to direct fans to when they went there they would get a nice splash page with a download button. They click on it, and get an instant download.

Added Pros:

  • Get people to your own site as opposed to some “rented” space
  • Complete flexibility. Make it password protected for your fan club, give it away to everyone. Stick it in your blog. Put it on a page with all your tour dates, create a re-direct to your sales page after they download…whatever you want!
  • Add whatever you want to that folder

Cons:

  • Depending on the size of your band/bandwidth limits etc. you may need to be careful
  • You do need to understand how your website, servers etc. work or hire someone who does.

Conclusion

Personally I feel like Noisetrade or a self-hosted ZIP are the best two options. Both allow for simple professional branding that can prominently display/and build your relationship with the downloader.Noisetrade edges self-hosted for me, primarily due to the potential front page placements on the chart, simplicity, recognition within the industry and the simple share functions that are so effective. However, at the end of the day, it all depends what your goals are.

This post was written by Andrew Jones, editor of Checkered Owl. It originally ran on his blog, but we loved it so much we felt it deserved to shared once more on ours. If you like his work and want to read more of his writing, or if you want to be super cool and offer him full time industry employment, reach out and connect with him on Twitter.
