The secret to figuring out your life and career

How many times has this happened to you: A day like any other is occurring when suddenly, without warning, you are attacked by every fear and self-doubt imaginable. You worry about deadlines, bills, money (or lack thereof), friends, appearances, diets, mental health, family, things, stuff, and a whole lot of additional nonsense too extensive to list in full here. These moment of panic happen to most, if not everyone trying to navigate the often treacherous landscape of existence, and most find they have no other choice than to endure such moments and hope they quickly pass.

If this applies to you, please do not fret. It applies to me as well, and probably every other person who dares click on this page. This is not the biggest website on Earth, but we do have visitors, so believe me when I say you should not feel alone because the fact you and I are connecting through these words now is proof there are many who suffer from these moments of uncertainty. If you only take one thing from this post please know that is that you are not alone in these struggles.

This brings me to the point of this post, which some of you may have already figured out. The secret to figuring out your life is accepting the fact you are nothing more or less than a constant work in progress. Happiness and success are journeys, not destinations, and the same can be said for anything else you may feel you are lacking right now in life. You might not be chasing your dreams the way you wish you could, but it is important to realize being able to chase your passions at all is something the vast majority of the 8 billion (plus) people walking this planet would kill to do. By simply knowing there is more in this life for you than what you have right now you are already miles ahead of most, and you will get further ahead still in time.

So embrace the chaos, my friend. Embrace it with the recognition that you have to wake every day and do the same, all while still pushing toward a better tomorrow. Some days you will get ahead, and if you’re lucky that good fortune will extend for weeks or even months, but at some point the pendulum of life will swing in the opposite direction and you will need to fight through that as well. This battle is yours and yours alone, but it is important to remember we are all fighting our own version of this battle in our individual lives each day. The wages of this war are often hard to see on the surface, but the exhaustion fighting to get ahead can cause is easy to see in the paths those around you inevitably fall into when their will to continue onward begins to breakdown. It is up to you to choose how far you go, and if you want to see your dreams through then that is entirely possible. Just remember that there will be setbacks, often far more frequently than you find success, but those setbacks only hurt you and your ability to achieve more as much as you allow. If you refuse to be stopped and wake every day battle ready you will, in time, find what you seek.

Through all of this you must keep your head held high for it is the only way to survive. You are worthy of the things you seek, but they must be earned each and every day.

Don’t lose sight of the future

Ten years ago no one could have predicted what the music landscape would look like today. We knew streaming was going to be a game-changer, but that is just one of maybe a thousand changes the industry has undergone in the last decade. In today’s market a single song or day can legitimately turn a nobody into a Billboard charting talent. Likewise, bands that have spent years building a following from the ground up can find themselves hitting a glass ceiling simply because they do not understand how to leverage digital media for their personal gain.

Industry professionals used to joke about never having a moment to catch their breath, both on the business and artist side of music, but today that once humorous remark is not far from the truth. If you’re not working on the next release then you’re expected to be engaging an audience, promoting to reach a new audience, or developing materials for the next big promotional push. It’s a nonstop cycle that in recent years has put more and more focus on the day to day attempts at success instead of considering what it will take to make a career last for months, years, or even decades.

With all the chaos of day to day existence only becoming more complicated over time it seems less and less people are putting serious thought into longterm goals and how to reach them. This is true in many areas of life, but it has special meaning in entertainment. Everyone who pursues a career in this corner of the business world is told from day one that the chances of making it are slim, and when the day comes that a job does present itself many are so thankful for the opportunity that they accept less than they’re worth just to say they are working in their desired field. This may work out okay in the short term, but if all a professional ever thinks about is the job or tasks in front of them how can they ever be prepared for what might come next?

As hard as it may be in an age of constant connectivity the need to unplug and consider the big picture cannot be overstated. The people who have long-lasting careers in music do not achieve such rare success through chance and luck alone. No, those who find a permanent place in this business do so because they are constantly working to make themselves indispensable. They consider the future, prepare for it, and know what to do when it arrives. They appreciate the fleeting nature of any career in this field and keep their skills sharpened just in case the bottom unexpected falls out (and it will).

There are countless tips on how to make short term gains in the music business, but those seeking a sustainable career in this field need more than quick fix solutions. This weekend, take time to unplug and seriously consider what you want to be doing as your time in this field progresses. Not everyone can tour and/or write forever. You are going to continue developing as a human and your role in this industry should as well. Where do you see yourself in five year, or perhaps even ten? What do you need to do now and in the months/years ahead to make sure you achieve that goal? Be specific in your answers and the path to a long-lasting career will show itself through your effort.

Focus On These 6 Things If You Want To ‘Make It’ In Music

In a recent episode of the 100 Words or Less podcast, guest Tom Mullen (of Washed Up Emo) bring up a great point about “making it.”

11:54 “If you don’t know where the basement show is, you’re disconnected, because that’s what’s next or what’s really happening. So if you’re out there and you’re in a band, find a basement show… don’t aspire to get on the Ernie Ball Stage.”

Yes, your name at the bottom of the list of 100 other bands in next year’s Warped Tour announcement will look cool, but if that’s what you’re shooting for you’re toast.

Here are a few better places to focus your efforts.

1. Be the band that people want to help and hook up all around your local community. Show up for their shows, even when you’re not playing. Not everyone in every local band will be your best friend, but be a good member of the local music community. Buy other band’s records, travel to their shows, talk them up. Don’t do this so when of those bands “break” they’ll hook you up, but do it to be a good human being.

2.Get out there and book some shows in other states. Playing in front of new crowds won’t win you 100s of fans per show, but it might land you one or two, and you never know – they might become your new best friends.

3. Just as you shouldn’t yell “we got shirts for sale in the back” in between every song when you’re playing out, you shouldn’t make every message on social media about you. Before you post anything, reply to 10 fans. Don’t RT them: reply to them. After you’re done with that, talk about a new album you love, or a good band you saw at your last show. Do this for months, and on occasion, sure – announce a show, or a pre-order. At that point you won’t have numbed your online audience to a never ending barrage of “LOOK AT ME” messaging (like every other band out there).

4. Help other bands. Again, it’s better when we do it together. Element 101 took an unknown band out for their first out-of-state show many years ago. Who was the band? My Chemical Romance.  When one band succeeds, we all benefit.

5. Make your own thing. Spotify sucks. No one buys albums. So and so band is dumb. That one promoter won’t book your band. Save your breath, time, and energy.

I got talking to Joe from Flintface recently, who is around my age and filled with much wisdom, and his words echoed in my soul: make your own thing. Make your own luck, your own tour, your own show. If you have a social media audience of 10,000 and an email list of 500 people from all the shows you’ve played in the past two years, you won’t need to rely on “getting signed" or being picked for a shitty side stage to “make it.”

6. Don’t talk shit with people you don’t know. If you’re trying to break into the industry, don’t speak negatively about any band, label, or outlet – you just never know who might work with who! I’ve seen this too many times. Someone says, “X band is the worst,” and then someone in the group says, “oh, really? My partner manages them.” GULP.

So don’t be disconnected. Be a part of something good, and if nothing is there, MAKE IT. Above all, work on being an awesome person that people want to work with and you won’t even need to grovel to play some sponsored side-stage.

Lessons from the Tour Bus

Hello, everyone! It is a beautiful Thursday here at Haulix HQ, and we could not be more thrilled to share with you a very special advice column. This feature was created with the help of Zach Stepek, a professional music photographer and freelance writer who has spent traversed many American miles while seated on a tour bus. We reached out in hopes of sharing his insight from his time on the road, and his response can be found in the paragraphs below.

You spend nearly every waking moment of your life away from your family in order to pursue your passions, risking everything on the possibility that you’ll achieve success doing something you love. You work more than you do anything else, and everyone you know thinks that you’re crazy for giving up the stability of a “normal” job. But you can’t help it. You either jump, or you wallow in the misery of mediocrity and conformity that’s been causing you to lose your mind in your dead-end job.

If this describes you, then you are an entrepreneur. Whatever your passion is, you’ve chosen to pursue it as your career, building something from the ground up with your skill, knowledge and tenacity. It’s hard to take that initial jump off the metaphoric bridge; I’ve done it many times, and it’s always equal parts terrifying and exhilarating. The rewards far outweigh the risk if the various pieces come together correctly. Sometimes, you just have to leap and hope the parachute appears.

From my experience, nobody leaps with more abandon than musicians. Most entrepreneurs go “all in” by spending a ton of time at the office. Musicians go all in by leaving their friends and family behind for months at a time to live on a tour bus or in a van with their business partners, sleeping in a different city nearly every night.

I personally feel that I’ve learned more about business from observing musicians than I have from reading countless books. I’d like to share a few of those observations with you:

Have A Plan

Like any entrepreneur, musicians spend their days selling their existing products, doing research and development for their next product launch, handling the press and interacting with their customer base. Most don’t just jump in and hope for the best every day, though. They have a day sheet that contains their plan for the day, and normally it’s divided into a couple of main sections; interactions with the press and production for that night’s show. Before they get on stage, they have a set list in place that details the game plan for the show. They follow these plans closely to make sure that everything runs without a hitch.

Build A Dream Team

Like a company, bands are only as successful as the teams they build. Every band starts with a core, founding team, and normally it’s comprised of the people performing the band’s primary function, playing music. As a band grows, though, they add people to the core team to supplement their own abilities. Touring requires juggling a lot of moving pieces, and the larger the tour, the more pieces there are.

Most entrepreneurs only have to see their employees for, at most, eight hours each business day. Musicians, on the other hand, spend a ton of time with their team, especially their tour support staff. Band managers, tour managers, stage managers, audio engineers, lighting technicians, drivers, instrument techs, booking agents, public relations coordinators, record label executives, marketing and creative services, social media managers, commercial licensing specialists, producers, recording engineers, photographers… the stronger the team, the stronger the brand.

Partnership is Stronger than Competition

The other people in your industry aren’t just your competition, they’re your peers, your brothers and sisters. Don’t tear them down. Strive to lift them up and help them achieve their goals and dreams. This is especially true when bands tour together. The level of camaraderie that I’ve observed between touring bands is amazing. It provides a sharp contrast to the backstabbing, kill or be killed mentality we seem to have adopted in the corporate world, both internally between co-workers and externally among competitors. I’m not saying that it doesn’t happen in the music industry, it just seems to be less common.

Research and Adapt

Musicians perform constant market research, testing not only their existing products, but also their prototypes, with focus groups, the fans and potential fans who attend their concerts. Many constantly change their pitch, or set list, to see if they get a better response from their fans. A vast majority have a very vocal feedback loop in place, because they’re experts at converting customers into raving fans. Music awakens passion in much the same way that our favorite products or brands do, and musicians know how to cater to their target demographic.

Success Takes Practice

When musicians aren’t on the road, they still spend time together regularly to practice. This is where they hone their craft for the road, preparing for the next time they’re on stage pitching their product. Practices don’t always go smoothly, but they’ll power through the same song, verse, measure or note until it’s right.

The only way to get better at being an entrepreneur is to put yourself out there and do it, day in and day out. Sure, you’re going to break a string in the middle of your solo, or somebody is going to decide that your pedalboard is a great place to put the contents of their drink, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t good at what you do. Learn from your mistakes and continually improve yourself and your business.
