THE BIGGEST MUSIC NEWS OF THE WEEK

Drake Drops Surprise Seventh Album, ‘Honestly, Nevermind’

Drake surprised followers Thursday with news that new music was coming and so it did.

“Honestly, Nevermind” dropped at midnight and has begun its race up the charts.

The album features Drake mostly singing instead of rapping.

“I let my humbleness turn to numbness at times letting time go by knowing I got the endurance to catch it another time,” he wrote in an editor’s note on his Apple Music artist page. “I work with every breath in my body cause it’s the work not air that makes me feel alive.”

YouTube Music Unveils Season Recap Playlists to Compete with Spotify Wrapped

YouTube Music has launched a new feature called seasonal recaps, a culmination of your top artists, songs, albums and playlists. “Spring Recap” will be the first recap that users can try. This acts as an expansion of its 2021 Recap experience introduced last year.

According to the company, it received positive feedback after rolling out its annual recap the previous year, wrote YouTube Product Manager Ayshaw Khan in a blog post. The recap, inspired by Spotify Wrapped, had offered users a look back at their year on the app. Now, YouTube is taking the concept further with seasonal rundowns.

“Similar to the 2021 Recap, you’ll find your personalized content in the Spring Recap landing page on the YouTube Music app along with your personalized Spring Recap playlist,” Khan wrote. “Want to tell your friends about your favorite songs of the Spring? Easily share your Spring Recap playlist and stats by simply tapping the arrow at the bottom of your stats card.”

Songclip Announces Strategic Partnership With the NMPA to Bring Music Licensing and Compliance to the App Marketplace

Songclip, the world’s only patented music clip company, today announced a strategic partnership with The National Music Publishers’ Association (NMPA), the trade association representing all American music publishers and their songwriting partners. The partnership aims to facilitate music licensing and compliance within the global app marketplace.

During the NMPA’s Annual Meeting at New York’s Lincoln Center on June 15, 2022, NMPA President & CEO David Israelite outlined the NMPA’s app initiative to cease and desist applications who provide unlicensed music to their users and an enforcement plan of action to combat music infringement within the global app marketplace. Israelite also announced that Songclip will be a strategic partner of NMPA to facilitate licensing across the app marketplace.

Songclip works in partnership with the major labels, publishers and more than 7,500 independent licensing entities to provide a streamlined solution for licensing and integrating music “as a feature” within consumer applications. The Songclip API seamlessly integrates into any app, manages and facilitates search, catalog & compliance, licensing, royalty payments and reporting.

“We are excited to partner with Songclip in our effort to ensure applications use music legally and responsibly,” says NMPA President and CEO, David Israelite.

Beyoncé announces new album ‘Renaissance’

Beyoncé is back.

Beyoncé Knowles-Carter has announced a new album, titled Renaissance, out July 29 according to a new listing for a Renaissance CD and products on her website. Several streaming services, including TIDAL and Spotify, also announced the forthcoming Beyoncé release on social media. No further details about the new album have been released.

Rumors of a new 2022 release first started to spread online June 9 after Beyoncé removed her profile pictures across all of her social media pages, with her highly organized fanbase the Beyhive theorizing the avatars signaled new material on the horizon.

Spotify Will Reduce Hiring By 25%

Spotify is reducing its new hiring by 25 percent as recession fears mount, according to an internal memo obtained by Bloomberg. It is unclear which parts of the business will be most affected.

Spotify is far from the only tech company to reevaluate its staffing as the stock market tumbles. Twitter and Meta each announced some degree of hiring freeze last month, and Netflix made headlines in April for its layoffs, particularly at in-house fan site Tudum.

During Spotify’s investor presentation last week, CEO Daniel Ek emphasized the company’s growth not only in subscriptions but in verticals beyond music like podcasting and, soon, audiobooks. But chief financial officer Paul Vogel did hint at the event that staffing could be affected by economic conditions.

The Biggest Streaming Earners In 2019 (So Far)

Streaming has changed the way artists make money, but that doesn’t mean the biggest stars of today have fallen on hard times.

When its the last time someone told you about buying an album? When is the last time someone who wasn’t a collector (vinyl, cassette) told you they bought an album? Unless your inner circle is filled with devoted, old school music fans the answer is probably not anytime in the recent past. We live in the age of digital, which means we live in the streaming era, and that evolution has changed the ways musicians make money.

Depending on who you ask, this is a good and bad thing. Newer artists, especially in the world of rock and metal, claim streaming has made it harder to earn money because fewer people are willing to pay $5 or $10 to purchase their music outright. On the other hand, artists who create strong singles have found that the ease of access that Spotify and similar platforms provide has lowered the barrier to discovery. Those artists still make far less per stream than they would if each play was tied to a sale, but high stream counts can prove more beneficial than sales over time.

Whatever the struggles for newer artists may be, those talents at the top of the industry hierarchy are continuing to rake in plenty of cash in the age of streaming. Understanding the math behind the streams is often a struggle, but Billboard recently uncovered the top 5 streaming earners of 2019 so far, as well as a rough estimate of just how much money they’ve brought in for their label and team.

1. ARIANA GRANDE
Total label streaming revenue YTD: $12.08M
Total audio and video on-demand streams YTD: 2.83B

2. DRAKE
Total label streaming revenue YTD: $11.29M
Total audio and video on-demand streams YTD: 2.58B

3. POST MALONE
Total label streaming revenue YTD: $10.90M
Total audio and video on-demand streams YTD: 2.63B

4. JUICE WRLD
Total label streaming revenue YTD: $8.38M
Total audio and video on-demand streams YTD: 1.92B

5. BILLIE EILISH
Total label streaming revenue YTD: $7.93M
Total audio and video on-demand streams YTD: 1.89B

Billboard’s estimates are based on Nielsen Music data and other information as of the week ending April 18. It’s a month later now, but the top five most likely remains the same, only with larger play counts.

It’s important to note that the second figure under each artist’s name combines song and video streams. Audio streams generate more revenue than video streams, but YouTube is an incredibly popular platform for music.

The figures above cover the sound recording royalty that the record label collects and doesn’t include publishing.

10 New Albums You Should Cover In April 2016

Depending on where you live it may be hard to tell, but summer is fast-approaching, and with the rising temperatures comes an avalanche of new music competing for your attention and blog coverage. We cannot and should not tell you how to run your blog, but if you’re the kind of writer looking for the best of the best to share with your audiences then we know of a few upcoming releases you should definitely keep your eye on. These records criss-cross genres, but each one adds something special to the global music community that we believe is worthy of coverage.

Also, just so you don’t start believing we claim to have final say over everything that is good or bad, please know we are always in the market for new discoveries ourselves. It’s rare that more than a day or two passes without someone pitching us new music, and we do our best to hear everything that arrives in our inbox. If you know of a great record on the horizon that is not mentioned in the list below, please comment and add your suggestion. We will definitely make time to listen, and who knows? Maybe you will be responsible for kickstarting the development of future blog content down the line.

Anyways, here are our picks for the must hear albums of April 2016:

The Summer Set – Stories For Monday (April 1)

What can we say about Stories For Monday that we haven’t already written or recorded? The fourth full-length record in a career littered with hits, Stories For Monday is without question the greatest collection of material The Summer Set has ever unleashed upon the world. The album deals a lot moving on, or at least the need to move on, all while staying true to the pop-friendly sound that made the band a household name in the alternative community. We think “All My Friends” may be one of the year’s best tracks, but you can feel free to choose your own favorite when you hear the record.

Explosions In The Sky – The Wilderness (April 1)

Listening to Explosions In The Sky with your eyes closed is like taking flight in a dream, only your feet are still firmly rooted to the ground. The Austin post-rock icons have delivered yet another beautifully complex offering with The Wilderness, and somehow they manage to keep their elaborate compositions relatively short. Only one of the album’s nine tracks surpasses the seven-minute mark, and only two others crack six-minutes. Of all the records EITS have released, this may be the most accessible, but that doesn’t mean the band is dumbing themselves down to appeal to younger audiences. The bar for quality has never been higher, and EITS more than rise to the challenge.

Dreamer & Son – Written Off, Moving On (April 2)

The ambient rock band Dreamer & Son is out to change the world. Forming in Boston from across the U.S., the young quartet puts heart and passion at the forefront of their music. Patrons of Tides of Man, Gates, and Kings of Leon will hear their inspiration in Dreamer & Son’s unique and memorable songs. On the stage or in the studio, they capture the full spectrum of human emotion with soft ambient verses, aggressive choruses, and an explosive live performance. Dreamer & Son aims to break down genre barriers and build a diverse family; a community based on love and acceptance.

Deftones – Gore (April 8)

There are only a handful of modern rock bands whose every move could be considered an ‘event’ in the world of music, but Deftones certainly fit the bill. Fans of all ages from all corners of the planet have been aching for new material from the California based band since Koi No Yokan dropped in 2012, and from what we’ve heard the band will not disappoint with this release. Of all the albums hitting stores in the month of April, Gore feels like the one most likely to end up on ‘Best Of 2016’ lists, and with the band’s penchant for extensive touring we’re sure it’s a record we will be discussing for many months to come.

Sleeping With Sirens – Live & Unplugged (April 8)

Who doesn’t love a good live album? Sleeping With Sirens have been perfecting the art of the alternative-to-mainstream rock crossover for the better part of three years at this point, and with the right amount of excitement behind them heading into summer this year could finally find the band becoming the radio darlings they were meant to be. Live & Unplugged will showcase a side of the group only previously heard on their widely popular acoustic EP, and it also provides the first covers the band has officially released. We never knew we could be excited for another cover of Sublime’s hit single “Santeria,” but here we are chomping at the bit for exactly that.

Me Like Bees – There Will Be Time (April 8)

Indie rock quartet Me Like Bees are poised to catch the alternative scene’s eyes and ears with the release of their head-bobbing, imaginative new EP There will be Time. The band won the opportunity to work with award-winning producer John Feldmann (5 Seconds of Summer, Panic! at the Disco, and of course Goldfinger) on the EP after competing against over 20,000 other artists in the Ernie Ball Battle of the Bands competition, and you can hear Feldmann’s helping hand guiding every note played. If this album isn’t good enough to make Me Like Bees a household name we don’t know what could – it’s that good.

Otep – Generation Doom (April 15)

Otep does not promote themselves as band, but rather as an art project or musical revolution aimed at waking the masses from their consumerism-induced comas to reveal the rampant problems impacting our world today. When you heard Generation Doom you hear the sound of creative people yearning to show the truth of our existence on this planet to the uninformed, and they do so through infectious hard rock anthems that will have you singing along in no time at all. We’re not sure if this is the greatest album in Otep’s catalog, but it’s definitely a competitor, and there are more than enough potential singles to help introduce the band to throngs of young rock fans.

Drake – Views From The 6 (TBD)

The self-proclaimed 6 God has been telling fans for months that his long-awaited new album would arrive in April, but as of this posting no hard date has been set. It’s possible that Drizzy will follow the release plan of last year’s If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late with an unannounced drop on some random night, but we’re not claiming to know anything more than you at this point in time. In fact, aside from “Summer Sixteen” it’s kind of hard to know what to expect from this release, but knowing Drake it will no doubt be something worth talking about.

Sorority Noise – It Kindly Stopped For Me (April 22)

Having been awarded breakout emo band of 2015 by every major music publication you’re likely to know, Sorority Noise are offering fans a bit of their softer side with this four-track EP. It Kindly Stopped For Me tells a story of loss, depression, and recovery in under twenty minutes, and it just might be one of the greatest narratives we’ve heard so far in music this year. If Bright Eyes were to release Fevers And Mirrors today it would sound like this record, and we honestly cannot think of a better compliment to give a band that is already loved by the entire alternative community.

The Other Stars – We Were Kids (April 29)

If The Get Up Kids or Piebald had gotten their start in the new millennium they would probably sound a lot like the new album from Massachusetts natives The Other Stars. We Were Kids is filled with anthemic songs of love, life, growing up, and moving on from front to back. It’s the kind of album that could and should propel the band behind it into the stratosphere, but that only happens if music blogs like the one you contribute to or run gives the band a few digital pages of press. This is the sound of the future, and it’s rooted in the best elements of alternative music history. Don’t miss out.

Our 23 Most Anticipated Albums Of 2016

New year, new music. We are still discovering the best release of last year that we didn’t know existed until our peers published their annual best-of posts, but that doesn’t mean we have forgotten about all the new material the lies on the horizon. We have only scratched the surface as far as what bands have new material in the work, but we already have nearly two dozen releases we cannot wait to own. What follows is a list of the artists and albums we believe will define the sound of the 2016, and we think if you give any one a chance you will find something to love. Who knows? You might even find the next band that will change your life.

PUP (Spring/TBA)

SideOneDummy may be the only label to appear twice on this list, but it’s an accomplishment their roster has more than earned. Pup, Canada’s answer to everything American rock is not, have criss-crossed the globe several times over since the 2014 release of their debut album. The world has been chomping at the bit for new music for quite sometime, and it seems the group is gearing up to share what they have been working on sometime this spring. Our hope is that there will be more anthems on par with “Reservoir,” but at this point we are willing to follow the band anywhere. All we ask is that a tour immediately follows the album’s release so that we may mosh with all our friends to what will surely be the soundtrack to summer 2016.

It Lies Within – Paramount (1/8)

Michigan’s It Lies Within have been through hell and back since inception, but every time people count them out they come back with a new record that commands the attention of any genre fan open to new ideas. Their latest, Paramount, is no exception. The band’s signature aggression is as present as ever, but its met with forward-thinking guitar work and globally focused lyricism that cuts through the ego-boosting noise currently polluting far too much much of the modern heavy music scene.

Frameworks – Time Spent (2/5)

We cannot think of the last time Topshelf Records let us down, but we know for certain it’s not the latest release from Frameworks. The band’s upcoming 2-song EP serves as an introduction into what could be the future sound of the group, with elements of industrial noise and synth being injected into their trademark noise. Some artists would struggle to leave a lasting impact on listeners with only two tracks, but the material on Time Spent is so interesting we have no doubt you’ll still be talking about it weeks, if not months after release. If this is indeed where Frameworks hope to focus their efforts moving forward they have more than earned our unwavering support.

YG – Still Krazy (TBA)

Twist My Fingaz” and “I Wanna Benz” were the only two tracks released by YG in the last year, but they were also two of the best hip-hop tracks to hit radio in 2015. The Compton raised rapper has been busy working on the follow-up to My Krazy Life for months on end, but all signs point to the album finally seeing the light of day sometime in early 2016. Rumors claims DJ Mustard may contribute to the record, but unlike YG’s debut we expect a wide array of production talent working behind the boards.

Modern Baseball – Holy Ghost (TBA Spring)

Run For Cover is a label that can do no wrong, but their greatest offering in 2016 (based on what we know they have planned) will no doubt be the third studio album from Philadelphia natives Modern Baseball. The group spent the fall recording the album, and when Spin spent time with the group in the studio the publication claimed the material was more expansive and anthemic than anything that has previously been released. We hope this is true, and we have no reason to doubt the band, especially after the wonderful evolution showcased on The Perfect Cast EP in late 2015.

Gojira (TBA)

The world needs more Gojira. Three and a half years have already passed since ‘L’Enfant Sauvage’ hit stores, and that is three and a half years too long. There are numerous talented death metal bands in the world, but none of them can compete with our love of Gojira, and we think any true genre fan will probably feel the same. Every release in the band’s catalog has been littered with envelope pushing ideas and lush guitar work that has helped to inspire an entirely new generation of musicians, and we expect something even better might be on the horizon.

ROAM – Backbone (1/22)

We are tired of people claiming to reinvent or bring meaning back to pop punk, so we’re choosing to call Hopeless Record signees ROAM pop rock’s much needed saviors. The band is everything 5 Seconds Of Summer are not, offering heartfelt anthems capable of inspiring a generation to move their feet and chase their dreams with songs they themselves wrote, but they could easily capture the same audience if given the chance. They are also tough enough to roll with Warped Tour regulars, boasting the intermittent heaviness of New Found Glory alongside the motivation lyricism of Set Your Goals.

Pierce The Veil (TBA)

There are few bands in the alternative rock world with a bigger global reach than Pierce The Veil, and it doesn’t take more than a simple Twitter search to understand how anxious their fans are for new music. The band has infamously teased the release of their fourth release for over a year, but a recently released 2016 preview from Fearless Records has now confirmed the release might actually be closer than fans think. If the material is even half as good as “The Divine Zero” we will be happy.

Lionheart – Love Don’t Live Here (1/22)

As long as bands like Lionheart exist we can sleep knowing hardcore music is alive and well. Four extremely long years have passed since the band released their last album, but now they are back with an LP dropping through their own label, LHHC Records, that does not disappoint. The album’s title is a nod to a Motown song of the same name, which plays well with the band’s refusal to abide by the so-called rules of hardcore far too many bands continue to cling to in 2016. Lionheart, like all true fans of the genre, understand hardcore is more a state of mind than anything, and they make that clear on this insanely good release.

Empty Houses (TBA)

Detroit’s Empty Houses quietly entered the music scene in 2015 with a short EP released through Bandcamp that quickly got alternative music snobs and throwback pop fans talking. It was the kind of magical moment that happens all too rarely in our oversaturated media landscape. The album had no major promotion and few reviews, but for whatever reason it resonated with listeners all year long. We have it on good authority that the band has another release prepped for 2016, and we have our fingers crossed this one is longer than four tracks. If you grew up with your parents’ Motown collection playing on repeat this is one group not to miss in the new year.

Pusha T – King Push (TBA)

Have you heard ‘King Push – Darkest Before Dawn: The Prelude’? If not, finish reading this article and immediately head to your local record store to purchase a copy of Pusha T’s late 2015 release. Yes, Pusha T just released a 10-song album ahead of an already announced 2016 full length, but that is just the way the angsty half of Clips likes to roll. Pusha has never been one to shy from controversy or saying what needs to be said, and he more than proved with that fact with the material on ‘Darkest Before Dawn.’ Knowing that album is essentially everything that was not good enough for ‘King Push’ proper leaves us foaming at mouth. Yes, we are so excited for this release the mere thought of it transforms us into rabid animals.

Avion Roe (TBA)

The future of Epitaph Records ability to continue their foothold on the world of alternative rock rests on the shoulders of Dallas natives Avion Roe. If this were any other band we would be concerned, but having watched the group build their career brick-by-brick with a fiercely DIY mindset since day one we have the utmost faith in their ability to win over rock fans around the globe. The group is a blend of everything that is popular today in alternative rock, but mixed with just a dash of mid-2000s influence that helps add an additional layer of emotional resonance to every track. Their four-song 2015 EP has been on repeat at HQ for weeks, and we cannot wait to have something new to enjoy (hopefully) early in the new year.

Microwave (TBA)

Georgia’s Microwave is perhaps the young band to beat in 2016. With SideOneDummy backing their every move, the band is set to finally release a follow-up their amazing full length album Stovall, which has been the talk of alternative music circles since its initial release in late 2014. Add to all this the fact the bandore than proved their ability to live on the road throughout 2015 and you have a recipe for indie punk success that knows no bounds.

Good Charlotte (Late Spring/Summer)

We never expected to be talking about Good Charlotte again, especially after hearing a whole lot of promise on The Madden Bros. solo record, but here we are at the start of 2016 feeling like our high school selves all over again. A recent profile in Rolling Stone covering 5 Seconds Of Summer revealed it was the contributions the Madden Brothers (Joel and Benji) made to that group’s first two records album that initialy inspired them to return to their punk roots, which means we now have a reason to love 5 Seconds Of Summer. GC dropped “Makeshift Love” back in November to prove they still know how to rock, but since then they have kept quiet as far as talk of new music is concerned. We suspect the group will have something ready by summer, but don’t hold your breath just yet.

Candy Hearts (TBA)

Nearly two years have crawled by in the wake of Candy Hearts’ All The Ways I Let You Down, and the world of female lead punk has been aching for the band’s return ever since. An acoustic EP released during summer 2015 was more than enough to keep us interested in the band’s unique take on rock’s angsty stepchild, but 2016 should see the band return with a proper third LP. If such a release never arrives, we may spend the year heartbroken, but we have a good feeling new material will surface sooner than later.

Drake – Views From The 6 (“Very soon”)

The world has been waiting for Views From The 6 since it was announced in the fall of 2014. Drake said it would arrive in 2015, but sometimes greatness takes time, and it’s not like Drizzy has left fans waiting in the interim. His biggest distraction from completing his long-awaited new LP has been working on other music projects, from his beef with Meek Mill that resulted in a Grammy nomination for “Back To Back,” to his chart-topping collaborative release with DS2 mastermind Future, and he’s more or less delivered quality material throughout. Drake always saves the best material for his albums, but considering everything we heard in the last year it’s hard to imagine what might still be on deck.

Deftones (TBA)

If there is one rock band we hope remains a band long enough that we can one day to our children (who do not yet exist) to see it’s California’s hard rock kings, Deftones. The band has been working on a follow-up to 2012’s Koi No Yokan since 2014, but numerous production delays has forced the release of the record into the first half of 2016. There is still no date set in stone, but we imagine the album will almost certainly be out by summer, which means a single should surface before the last of the winter snow begins to melt. Having already waited basically four years, what’s a bit longer?

Blink-182 (TBA)

There will be some who claim there is no Blink-182 without Tom Delonge, but we are trying to approach the Mark, Matt (Skiba), and Travis show with an open mind. Hoppus and Barker proved with their short-lived +44 project that they can pen powerful pop punk anthems without the aide of their longtime Blink brother, and Skiba is certainly no stranger to the band’s world of music. There is a possibility this new version of Blink falls flat, but there is equally good chance this unique trio delivers something truly special that no other act can imitate. Here’s hoping the latter comes true.

Explosions In The Sky (TBA)

Five years have passed since Austin’s Explosions In The Sky released a proper album, but they have contributed a number of enthralling soundtracks to the world of independent film in the interim (Prince Avalanche, Lone Survivor, Manglehorn). It’s hard to know where the world’s leading post rock group will go next, but there are throngs of listeners around the world waiting with bated breath to find out. If the only reason you know this band is because you loved Friday Night Lights we highly recommend using the time you have now to familiarize yourself with the rest of their catalog.

Whitechapel (TBA)

Speaking with HoustonPress back in November, WhiteChapel guitarist Alex Wade perked out interest about the band’s future when he said to expect the unexpected with the group’s upcoming 2016 release. He teases a complete turn in term of sound, even alluding to the possibility of clean vocals appearing on the record, and we haven’t been able to stop trying to imagine what that might sound like ever since. We haven’t heard as much as a second of this new record, but we already wish to know every detail about its inspiration and production.

Bob Seger – I Knew You When (TBA)

2016 marks Bob Seger’s 50th year in music. Go ahead and let that sink in for a minute. Crazy, right? In all that time Seger has released more hit songs than we can begin to count, and he’s certainly not letting a milestone like this pass by without sharing some new(ish) material with the world. I Knew You When will reportedly feature unreleased material, as well as updated takes on old songs. Seger will also tour next year, and we cannot urge you to see him enough.

Sum 41 (TBA)

There was a time not that long ago when it seemed like the world would never see Sum 41 again, but an outpouring of support for frontman Deryck Whibley as he fought for sobriety reigniting the vocalist’s creative passion. Whibley found healing through venting his songwriting, and as a result he committed himself to the studio to vent whatever demons were dragging him down. The rest of the band followed Deryck’s lead and soon the group was working on their most aggressive release since Chuck. We don’t know when we’ll hear the finished product, but we know that time cannot come soon enough.

Moose Blood (Summer)

We caught Moose Blood for the first time during Warped Tour 2015, and the impression they left on us has been the topic of numerous conversation ever since. The UK born band has been compared to everyone from Brand New to Mallory Knox, and their debut album I’ll Keep You in Mind, From Time to Time is already considered a classic. We believe the band will continue to carve their own path with an ever-evolving sound that challenges the alternative norm, which is something that cannot be said about most leading rock bands today. No Sleep has yet to tease any material from this release, but we really don’t need to hear anything to know we want this album in our personal record collection as soon as possible.

What Adele, Drake, And Modern Baseball Have That Every Musician Needs

The only thing more annoying than bandwagon fans may be bandwagon haters. People who feel it is their duty as fans of a particular sound or genre to tear down whoever is currently dominating the charts because they believe it makes them unique or edgy in some way. We who embrace the hitmakers know better, as we understand there is a reason certain artists see their star shoot into the stratosphere while others must work incredibly hard for every tiny bit of success they achieve. The reasons for this are as numerous as grains of sand on the beach, but one thing that is almost always true about real music stars, and by that I mean those who are able to hold the public’s attention across multiple albums, is that they always find a way to connect with people in a way that feels personal.

To be clear, what I just said is far easier to grasp than it is to recreate. We all follow our own paths in this life, experiencing practically every aspect of existence in a way that is wholly unique to ourselves, yet for some reason there are certain songs and/or artists who have the power to make us feel as though we are part of something bigger than ourselves. Call it a community, or a culture, or a way of life, but there is something to the biggest material in history that connects with people in a deeply personal way. You may have never experienced the situation being described in the song, and you may never know the story that inspired the lyrics, but something about the way emotion is being expressed cuts through the noise and strikes you right in your soul. It moves you, as it does others, and as soon as it’s over we long to feel that connection again. That is the sign you’ve found something truly great in music, and it’s something that is completely achievable by pretty much every artist working today. That is, if they work hard enough.

The big star of the moment is Adele, and by now you’ve no doubt heard her single “Hello” between one and one-hundred times in your daily life. Her music is everywhere right now, and her new single “When We Were Young” seems poised to push her exposure even further. The production on these tracks is undeniably gorgeous, and Adele’s powerful voice is something that will be praised for decades to come, but what makes these songs work at Top 40 radio and beyond has little do with those factors and far more to do with the feeling you get when the music plays. Adele, like Drake on tracks like “Hotline Bling” or “Hold On, We’re Going Home,” has the power to make you miss people and situations you have never actually known. Something in the way the music compliments the lyrics, which are typically pulled from a deeply personal place, creates an atmosphere of turmoil and heartache that listeners take upon themselves to connect with events in their own lives. It doesn’t matter whether or not the events that inspired the song are the same as the events the lyrics are being applied to by the listeners, and it never will. All that matters is that the performer is able to capture a feeling, or perhaps a better description would be a sense of being, that translates on a massive scale.

What I’m trying to say is that the reason these artists skyrocket into the music stratosphere while others fight over lower chart positions is because people feel like the know them. When you hear the music of Adele and Drake, or even smaller acts like The Hotelier or Modern Baseball, you feel as if you are hearing an update from a close friend about what has been going on in their life since you last spoke. It’s entertaining, yes, but it’s so much more than that as well. You long for those updates, and when they arrive you click play with all the hope in the world that you and this person or group, whom you’ve never met, have been experiencing similar situations in life. You hope there is something in there story that relates to your own, and that kind of connection is incredibly hard to break. Even if the quality of the music begins to suffer, and the radio songs can’t crack the top 10, people who have connected to an artist on an emotional level will continue to follow them for as long as they are able.

I cannot tell you how to create songs that connect with people the way the latest singles from Drake and Adele do, but that is okay because writing material like that should not be your goal after reading this post. Writing music that would work for Drake or Adele is not guaranteed to work for you, at all. Your goal, or better yet your mission, should be to find a way to create the music you want to make in such a way that it connects with people like the material released by your musical peers. It’s not about copying someone else’s formula, but rather finding a way to tap into the same set of relatable emotions that has established countless artists as household names over the last hundred or so years of pop music. Even if you’re writing metal, the goal remains the same. You want to create something that is both personal and universal, which shares a part of you in a meaningful way while still allowing others to add their own meaning to the material. There is no recipe for that kind of creation, nor are the any guides I would suggest you spend time reading. The best way to make material like this is too simply keep creating, and in time you will learn to refine your skills. As your songwriting improves, so will the reach of your music, but you cannot allow yourself to get lost in thoughts of what a song could potentially be or do for you. As soon as you take your focus away from creating great songs that actually mean something to you, the artist, your chances of connecting with listeners begins to drop. Stay true to yourself and people will notice. It might take time, but that’s perfectly okay.

Haulix Weekly Update #60 – “Can you believe we have made sixty of these?”

Good afternoon, everyone! We hope this update finds you doing well and looking forward to the weekend ahead. We have been itching for Friday all week long it seems, and a lot of it is owed to up and comer Makonnen. A member of the OVO family, Makonnen has been climbing the urban charts for the past several months, and earlier this week he took his exposure to new heights with the release of his official video for “Tuesday.” It’s a track dedicated to those who are not afraid to party during the work week, but it plays just the same when the weekend rolls around. Pick up some good vibrations and discover what Makonnen has to offer:

Each and every Friday we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

If you have been following our last several updates then you no doubt understand just how busy our development team has been in recent weeks. From email design to profile creation, our dev team rarely take a moment to catch their breathes. We do not have any major updates to unveil this week, but I am allowed to tell you that there will be a new tool for members of the press available early next week. We’ll send out an email when it’s ready, but you can also count on seeing that update mentioned in next week’s recap.

On the blog side of things, this week was not unlike others in recent moment. We recorded a slew of new interviews, planned even more, and spent at least one full work day focused on transcribing conversations that took place over the last month. The result of all that hard work will soon be available for your entertainment, but until that time we have collected links to all our recent posts for you to review:

Music Industry Job Board (10/19/14)

If I had to choose one piece of content this week that cannot be missed I would have to say that the latest episode of ‘Inside Music’ takes the cake. I think our podcast has come a long way in its three months of existence, and it seems with each episode we are improving in every possible way. The latest episode is also the best, so please don’t let it pass you by.

That’s all the news and updates we have this week. Please check in over the weekend for an updated job board, as well as the potential for additional new content.
