Pandora to test AI-powered interactive voice ads later this year

A world where you can communicate with advertiser in real time is right around the corner.

Have you ever wanted to respond to an ad while streaming content? Maybe you want more information, or perhaps you just want to explain why it’s not a good ad to you. Whatever the case, Pandora users may soon be able to talk back to the platform’s audio advertisements in real time, thanks to the power of AI.

That’s the idea behind Pandora’s new partnership with San Francisco-based, voice-enabled ad platform Instreamatic. With the agreement, Pandora will begin testing interactive voice ads later this year.

Traditional audio ads are not clickable. As a result, advertisers have never really know how consumers react to the ads they buy on platforms such as Pandora, Spotify, etc. Do they ignore the ads? Do they mute them? Do they make purchases?

Instreamatic’s software may be a solution. Once implemented, Pandora users will be able to react to ads as they play by asking for more information, requesting to not hear the ad again, or skipping the advertisement altogether. The insight provided will strengthen Pandora’s advertising algorithm, as well as provide advertisers with useful feedback about their campaigns.  Plus, the new audio ads could help Pandora reach listeners who may be unable to engage with visual ads while cooking, working out or doing other activities.

“The age of voice has arrived, yet there’s remained a stark need for meaningful consumer engagement — and measurable metrics — in the audio ad space,” said Stas Tushinski, Instreamatic.ai CEO, in a release. “We believe provides the ideal ad platform to serve this marketplace.”

The technology goes further than recognizing “yes” and “no” responses to prompts in advertising. Instreamatic’s AI functionality can study, interpret and understand user intent, and the platform will continue to learn and increase its vocabulary and predictive power with every interaction.

“Voice interactivity has already changed the way consumers interact with brands on smart speakers, and we believe voice will change the very nature of the way consumers interact with brands on Pandora,” added Pandora’s VP of Product Engagement, Eric Picard. “We intend to foster an ecosystem of demand-side technology parties to scale voice ads and working with to support this capability has been a true joy.”

If the trials are successful, it is likely other streaming services will implement similar technology in the near future. After all, data is king, and the more consumer feedback available to advertisers will inevitably produce better, more specific ad campaigns. Better ads lead to increased sales, and increased sales lead to more ad buys. Everyone (involved) wins!

Spotify, Amazon, and more sue songwriters to prevent royalty rates from rising

Four of the largest music streaming services are appealing a ruling that promises to raise mechanical royalty rates by 44% over the next five years.

How much is a song worth? According to most streaming services, the answer is roughly $0.003 per stream. A new ruling from the Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) aims to raise that value to $0.004 per stream, but Amazon, Spotify, Pandora, and Google disagree.

The four streaming giants are appealing the ruling that hopes to raise mechanical royalty rates by 44% over the next five years. Spotify, Amazon, Google, and Pandora have each filed separate appeals, with Apple the only major streaming player choosing to abstain.

The four companies also released a joint statement detailing their decision, which reads, “The Copyright Royalty Board (CRB), in a split decision, recently issued the U.S. mechanical statutory rates in a manner that raises serious procedural and substantive concerns. If left to stand, the CRB’s decision harms both music licensees and copyright owners. Accordingly, we are asking the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit to review the decision.”

In a statement released today, March 7, the National Music Publishers Association (NMPA) said that a “huge victory for songwriters is now in jeopardy” due to the streaming services’ filings.

NMPA President & CEO David Israelite commented:

“When the Music Modernization Act became law, there was hope it signaled a new day of improved relations between digital music services and songwriters.

That hope was snuffed out today when Spotify and Amazon decided to sue songwriters in a shameful attempt to cut their payments by nearly one-third.

The Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) spent two years reading thousands of pages of briefs and hearing from dozens of witnesses while both sides spent tens of millions of dollars on attorneys arguing over the worth of songs to the giant technology companies who run streaming services.

The CRB’s final determination gave songwriters only their second meaningful rate increase in 110 years. Instead of accepting the CRB’s decision which still values songs less than their fair market value, Spotify and Amazon have declared war on the songwriting community by appealing that decision.”

Instead of accepting the CRB’s decision which still values songs less than their fair market value, Spotify and Amazon have declared war on the songwriting community by appealing that decision.

No amount of insincere and hollow public relations gestures such as throwing parties or buying billboards of congratulations or naming songwriters “geniuses” can hide the fact that these big tech bullies do not respect or value the songwriters who make their businesses possible.

We thank Apple Music for accepting the CRB decision and continuing its practice of being a friend to songwriters.  While Spotify and Amazon surely hope this will play out in a quiet appellate courtroom, every songwriter and every fan of music should stand up and take notice. We will fight with every available resource to protect the CRB’s decision.”

Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) Executive Director Bart Herbison also responded to the companies’ decision, saying:

“It is unfortunate that Amazon and Spotify decided to file an appeal on the CRB’s decision to pay American songwriters higher digital mechanical royalties. Many songwriters have found it difficult to stay in the profession in the era of streaming music. You cannot feed a family when you earn hundreds of dollars for millions of streams.

Spotify specifically continues to try and depress royalties to songwriters around the globe as illustrated by their recent moves in India. Trying to work together as partners toward a robust future in the digital music era is difficult when any streaming company fails to recognize the value of a songwriter’s contribution to their business.”

If the ruling holds, the 44% increase will be only the second substantial increase to mechanical royalty rates to pass in the last 110-years.

Here Are The 10 Biggest Music Streaming Apps, Worldwide

The jury may still be out on the debate of whether or not streaming makes a direct impact on someone’s decision to buy an album, but regardless the age of streaming appears to be here to stay. There are new streaming services popping up every few weeks, and at the same time the current competitors are scrambling for exclusives and other offerings to help them stand out from the pack. You may not believe in using these services yourself, but its clear from the data made public that a good portion of consumers feel they are the new normal, and in business public opinion carries a lot of weight.

App Annie, a company that specializes analytics services and market intelligence as it relates to the world of apps, has released a new report on the popularity of streaming services around the globe. The 31-page document, which is available for free download to anyone interested, aims to help identify music streaming opportunities in active users, downloads and revenue.

A few takeaways from the report include:

  • The top streaming apps worldwide saw data consumption per active Android phone user grow by 25% year-on-year while downloads increased by around 15% and revenue from in-app purchases doubled.
  • New opportunities are growing and being served by players in Asian markets where local content puts regional players ahead of global giants.
  • Traditional FM radio networks are finding some traction with apps, potentially providing a model that networks in other markets can replicate.
  • Mixtape streaming apps are on the rise, highlighting the value users place in new music discovery.

The report also outlines the top performing streaming services around the globe as of October 2015, both for iPhone users and those who prefer Android devices.

The success of Spotify probably won’t come as a surprise to most, but there are numerous competitors on both charts that have received little to no press stateside. Still, by sheer luck or some kind of marketing genius completely oblivious to us, there are new users signing up to take advantage of those lesser known services every single day. Could TuneIn Radio be the next big thing in music streaming? It sure seems like it.

The one thing missing from these charts, or at least the iPhone chart, is Apple Music. The streaming service, which launched at the end of June, had only just ended its initial round of free user trials when the data for these charts was pulled. If we could see the November data I am confident Apple Music would be a top 5 competitor, but right now it’s unclear how their userbase stacks up to the competition.
