Apple Changes Royalty Plan Following Taylor Swift’s Open Letter: Will Pay Labels During Free Trial

Whether you’re an artists working in pop, country, rock, rap, hip-hop, black metal, doom, grindcore, folk instrumentalism, post-modern opera, or some obscure combination of everything in between, everyone in music owes Taylor Swift a bit of thanks for speaking up against Apple’s new royalty plan for the launch of Apple Music over the weekend. Her open letter, which called the plan to not pay artists during the company’s three-month trial launch ‘disappointing,’ went viral just jours before senior vice president of internet services and software Eddy Cue tweeted that Apple would, in fact, pay artists during the 90-day period.

In an interview with Billboard, Cue elaborated that it was Swift’s letter that turned him around on the issue. “When I woke up this morning and saw what Taylor had written, it really solidified that we needed a change. And so that’s why we decide we will now pay artists during the trial period.”

Everyone expected the tech giant to respond to Swift’s letter, but the seemingly immediate change of policy came as a surprise to many, including Swift herself. “I am elated and relieved,” she tweeted after the new broke. “Thank you for your words of support today. They listened to us.”

Some in the music community, while happy about the news, were concerned that it took an artist as big as Swift to complain before action was taken. As you may recall, we ran a story early last week that shared the concerns from numerous people in the indie music community. Those same concerns were shared on countless blogs and news outlets, but it seems Apple didn’t think to respond until Taylor Swift made it a point to get involved. To his credit, Cue told Billboard he had heard “concern from a lot of artists” before hearing from Swift. You can draw your own conclusions as to whether or not that had the same impact.

Apple will be eating the cost of the royalty payout, as the company intends to not charge any consumer for using the service during its first 90-days of existence.  That will no doubt be a big bill to pay, but considering the company is expected to be valued at $1 trillion by 2016 it seems like a tab they will be able to cover.

Apple Music is set to launch on June 30, and we are planning to run an editorial with our initial impressions not long after. For now, spread the word of the new royalty plan so artists make a it a point to claim their Apple Music Connect profile as soon as possible.

Spotify is introducing ‘Touch Preview,’ which will allow users to preview any song on the streaming platform by pressing and holding onto whatever track interests them. As seen in the video above, this tool can be used to preview albums, playlists, and everything in between. It’s a small update, but one that we’re sure many will find useful in their day-to-day lives.

What other improvements would you like to see Spotify make in 2015?

Haulix Weekly Update #58 – Does Anyone Listen To Morning Zoos in 2014?

We have started almost every one of our recent updates by introducing you to an up and coming artist we love. This week we made it a point to highlight the fact we often work with comedians as well, so we thought it would be a nice change of pace to feature one of our favorite comics at the top of this update. You may have heard of Marc Maron because of his hit show on IFC, but he’s been a standup for many years, and his recent ‘Thinky Pain’ special has kept us laughing throughout 2014. You can view the special on Netflix right now, but here’s a clip to get you started:

Each and every Friday we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

We have dev updates! We have dev updates!

We have been teasing new product updates for the past several weeks, and in recent days we were finally able to unveil on project that has been taking up a lot of our time.

Our promo distribution platform has long allowed for customization, but this week we took those efforts one step further by allowing for fully transparent promo creation. This means clients have more options than ever before to make each promo reflect the artist its meant to represent. Here’s an example of what a promo created using this feature can look like:

Want to do this with your next promo? Log into your Haulix account and follow these steps:

1. Click on Promos

2. When you have your promo selected, click on the Design button

3. In the upper right Design column, click the drop down list and select New…

4. Give your template a name and Create

5. In the right column, click to upload a background image.  You can either use one wide 2000px image that does not repeat or upload a small tile and repeat it.

6. With your background image uploaded, adjust the other colors and check both of the “transparent” checkboxes.

7. Click the Save button

8. Click to Preview your promo

TIP:  Create a semi-transparent header image (870px wide) and upload it. Your background will blend into the header image.

ON THE BLOG END OF THINGS – we do not have any updates as cool or innovative as the one mentioned above. We do, however, have a lot of new content. In the past seven days we conducted over a dozen interviews, including three new podcast episodes, two artist spotlights, two blogger spotlights, and multiple industry features. To say the fall/winter will be exciting would be an understatement.

Here’s a quick list of everything we ran this week. If you missed anything, now is the time to catch up:

That’s all we have for this week. Thank you for your continued support. Have a safe and fun weekend. We’ll be back tomorrow with another piece of content for you to enjoy.

Best,

Haulix

Haulix Weekly Update #51: Make Like Ariana Grande & Break Free

Walking outside this morning I felt a chill that let me know summer is slowly beginning to wind down. The temperature may linger in the upper 70s for a while longer, but before you know it the leaves will begin to change. The good news, at least for those of us not working 24/7, is that there are still a few seasonal weekends left before the cold settles in. Don’t sleep on this opportunity for freedom outdoors. It will be gone before you know it.

Each and every Friday we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

REMINDER: We will be performing general patch updates in all of our servers this Saturday, August 16, from12:00PM to 4:00PM CST. There will be some minor downtime during the process and services will be unavailable.

Okay, back to our normal programming. This week was a quiet one on the development front, but that does not mean our team was taking it easy. In fact, the past several days have been filled with hard work and many hours logged by people who avoid sunlight in order to stare at the code that keeps us alive. They’re working to keep things operating as well as they possibly can, and we think they’re doing a swell job. There will be news about future updates soon.

On the blog side of things, the week was one of the most content heavy in recent memory. We ran our normal slew of posts, but also began developing more than a dozen new projects. We even recorded 2 new episodes of our podcast, which will return with improved audio quality early next week. For now, catch up on anything you may have missed by using the links below:

When And Why You Should Consider Re-Issuing Old Material

That’s all we have for this week. Find a pop song you cannot resist and have a weekend filled with dancing. No one will judge you. Okay, some might, but if they do are they really the type of people you want in your life?

Haulix Weekly Update #50 – You Are Now Entering A No Flex Zone

“I have never in my life found myself in a situation where I’ve stopped work and said, ‘Thank God it’s Friday.’ But weekends are special even if your schedule is all over the place. Something tells you the weekend has arrived and you can indulge yourself a bit.” – Helen Mirren

I don’t know about your way of living, but I never question the words of a woman who once portrayed The Queen. Friday is here, and that means it’s time to let go of the week’s frustrations and embrace the freedom the weekend represents.

Each and every Friday we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

Starting with the development side of things, we are currently taking steps to add a sixth media server to our platform. Our growth in 2014 has been overwhelming in the best possible way, so we’ve dedicated the last several weeks to refining our platform and planning for additional growth in the future. We’re ready for whatever the world brings our way, and in the months to come that will likely include a few additional development updates that I’ve been told I’m not allowed to share with the public just yet. Trust me, it’s coming.

On the blog side of the company, the past several days have been littered with brainstorming sessions for future advice columns and over a dozen interviews. We know the past few weeks have been heavy with editorials, but in the months to come there will be a very large resurgence of Spotlight columns. We’re also bringing back our podcast, only this time with the kind of studio-quality audio you expect from such broadcasts.

I know how busy the week was for us, so I can only imagine the type of work all of you had to complete before reaching this point. In case you missed any content we ran in recent days, use the links below to catch up:

Haulix Weekly Update #48: If Loving Bob Seger Is Wrong Then I Don’t Want To Be Right

I’ve lost count of how many new tracks come our way every week, but I know it’s a number that seems to grow exponentially larger by the month. In the midst of all that, isn’t it funny how sometimes it’s the songs we haven’t heard in years that get us through the day? For me, today, that song is “Night Moves.” Yes, the one by Bob Seger. Don’t laugh. This song was solid gold the day it was created, and it remains that way to this very day. Don’t believe me? Allow the music to defend itself:

Each and every Friday we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

After several weeks of constant reveals, we have no big breakthroughs to report from our development team. Instead, we have spent the past several days refining our already proven tools and plotting the next steps towards complete industry domination (kidding). We also upgraded our watermarking technology, which you can read about in a blog post we ran on Wednesday afternoon.

Speaking of the blog, there has been a lot going on behind-the-scenes of this little Tumblr page. We have moved beyond August and began plotting our efforts in September. We also upgraded our podcasting equipment, so the next time you hear ‘Inside Music’ the quality will be far beyond what was on display during our debut.

Haulix Weekly Update #47 – ‘Up there! In the sky! It’s…It’s…A new development!’

I don’t know about you, but I woke this morning with a small spring in my step. The day greeted me with a cool breeze and plenty of sunshine, but something inside me told me the pleasant weather was not the source of my joy. I hopped in the showed and applying shampoo when it hit me: IT IS FRIDAY.

Each and every Friday we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

The past week has been pretty crazy around headquarters. We continued to promote our latest promotional video, as well as the recently unveiled profile system, but the task that took up the vast majority of our time was a new update we’re just about ready to share. Yes, the rumors no one started are completely true, Haulix has another big update coming in just a matter of days and we cannot wait to share the details with all of you. For now, however, we will simply tease the fact that this update deals with something that lies at the core of everything we do here at Haulix. Without it, our company would likely not have survived as long as it has, and with this latest update we hope to secure our position in the industry for many years still to come.

On the blog end of things, life has been passing us by at 200 miles per minute. I believe we have worked on more than two dozen new features this week, including eleven interviews with various industry professionals. We plan to run all of that content before the end of August, so you know there are a few crazy weeks ahead. Before we get there, however, we should reflect on the 10,000 words published in recent days. Here is a list of everything you may have missed while working away your week:
