…But what if the music stops?

If every aspiring music professional were asked to list their biggest concerns regarding their chosen career path the top response would undoubtedly be the unpredictability of the industry. Even if you do everything right there is no guarantee there will be a place for you six months from now, let alone five or ten years down the line. That ambiguity is hard for many, and for good reason. Humans are conditioned to seek comfort and security. We want to make careers out of what we love and we want those careers to last as long as we have to work. Many jobs work this way, but not music.

Professional comfort zones do not exist in the world of music. The sound that sells well today may not sell at all in six months. The startup you move across the country to work at could lose funding overnight. The venue you launch to build a local scene close or lose its license. The band you hitch your career to may fall apart before they achieve greatness. The possibilities are endless, and each will leave you questioning what to do next.

If anyone tell you this fear does not keep them up at night they are either a liar or someone using sleep aides. The fear of music industry downturn lives inside every current professional because they or someone they know has experience such hardship in the past. It happens regularly, not all at once across the business, but in various pockets as the ebb and flow of consumerism dictates. Even the best in their field feel the pinch, and for some it becomes too much to bare.

Industry influencers love to speak of a day in the distant future where such concerns do not exist, but  the realty of right now is that no one knows what the next year will bring. Maybe streaming services will continue to grow, and in doing so be able to better compensate talent, but that is not a guarantee. Maybe festivals will continue to be lucrative events, or maybe the recent massacre in Las Vegas will keep average consumers away. Again, the possibilities are endless.

You cannot stop living today due to fear over what may happen in the future. There are no guarantees things will work out, but the fact you know that going in is an advantage. When others give up because things become difficult you will persevere because the struggle is part of the journey. The loss of an opportunity will not devastate you because you will understand another lies just around the corner. The odds will always be stacked against you, but that does not mean your dreams are impossible.

Most people do not realize just how cutthroat the entertainment business really is until they’ve spent years of their lives trying to make their dreams work. Don’t be one of those who find themselves feeling burnt out by twenty-five with nothing to show for all your hard effort. Dig in deep now, push forward, and do not let up. There will always be a chance the music stops, leaving you without a paycheck and a lot of necessary sacrifices, but that possibility can inspire as much at scares. Use the knowledge nothing is guaranteed to your advantage and work to share the reality you seek in life. You might not get there, but it is better to give something your all and fall short than to never try because you fear what could go wrong. Everything is chaos. Accept this fact and forge ahead. There is no other way to live.

The best resume advice anyone can offer

The only thing more difficult than figuring out a way to not sound desperate or like a complete suck up when writing a cover letter is figuring out how to present yourself and the skills you have acquired through a resume. Many of us grew up making our own, single sheet resumes through Word or a similar program, but as anyone trying to find a job in the world today will tell you that method is now considered the bare minimum in terms of presentation. Especially in industries like music where competition is tough and jobs are hard to come by, doing the bare minimum rarely gets you where you want to be.

So, in an overcrowded marketplace where talent is everywhere and substantial employment is always hard to come by, what is someone like you to do?

Two words: Get creative.

I recently read a story about a man in San Francisco who had been having trouble getting even as much as an interview, let alone a real shot at landing a job. San Francisco is considered one of the toughest job markets in the United States today, and the city itself often ranks as one of the most expensive places to live in the world. To stand out from the competition this man disguised himself as a delivery man and delivered a box of doughnuts to person responsible for hiring at the various offices around the city where he hoped to maybe find work. Inside each box of doughnuts, in addition to the confectionary treats that got him in the door, would be a copy of the man’s resume. Check it out:

Out of 40 deliveries, the man in this story landed 10 interviews.

Obviously, when stories like this go viral copycats are bound to make themselves known. You might not be able to get away with pulling off the same stunt as the man in the story above, but you could find a way to apply his ingenuity to the field and companies where you wish to work. I remember a publicist for a wildly popular metal label telling me about how his application was printed in blood red ink on black paper. That kind of creativity takes about 10 seconds to implement and can make all the difference between whether or not you get called in for an interview.

I wrote last week about how those seeking work in music would be wise to “find a need and fill it.” While I do believe that to be the best way to seek out work in music, you still need to convince whoever you are looking to work for/with that they you’re worth the money it would cost to bring you on as an employee. A creative resume or a creative presentation of your resume is a good way to do that, and it shows you’re willing to go the extra mile when most others would settle for the bare minimum. That’s the kind of drive that separates stars from bands that never make it as big as their music suggest they should be, and it’s what every employer in music is looking to find in new recruits.

Another story of predatory behavior in the music industry

The last few years the alternative music world has been embroiled in a number of controversy involving musicians and allegations of sexual misconduct brought against them by their own fans. The debate over whether or not these stories should be covered and how the allegations could be authenticated waged well into 2016, but now we face a new type of monster who is further threatening the way people feel when engaging with the modern music industry.

We’ve discussed this story before, but in the wake of even more allegations of misconduct we felt it necessary to revisit because there are monsters in every corner of this industry. It’s not a matter of label heads or musicians in power, but anyone who believes this position in this business entitles them to carry out their will on others. This is a blogger, and when I say that in the most literal sense. This person is not a Rolling Stone journalist or someone with a million followers on Twitter, but a relative nobody making nothing or next to nothing talking about the bands they love. Whatever power they believe themselves to have is a work of their imagination. At the request of the people involved I am not using any names or dates, but know the following story – which is posted as it was received – took place within the somewhere in the United States:

‘…a TM (female) that unfortunately missed an interview for our client due to a simple time zone mistake. Instead of the interviewer cancelling or rescheduling, he took it upon himself to ask her for inappropriate photos of her in order to move forward with the interview.’

I reached out to the publicist in question to gain some clarity on this message. Apparently, the interview was scheduled for a specific time that was not met by the band. When the group finally reached the individual, he suggested the group’s female tour manager share nude photos of herself as an apology before he would proceed with the interview. I’m told the TM laughed the incident off in the moment, but the individual in question – a personality from an online radio show – pressed the issue further. The band completed the interview without incident and immediately phoned their publicists afterward to film them in on what had happened.

To be as clear as possible: You, a writer, are owed nothing by the bands you cover or the people they hire to represent them. Even if an artist is late or otherwise misses a prearranged event, you are owed nothing as a member of the press. Common courtesy is always nice, but again – it should not be anticipated.

Furthermore, there is no reason for anyone to treat anyone this way. No one owes you photos of their naked body, regardless of circumstances. If you feel wronged in some way the argument can be made for an apology,  but to infer that you deserve more or to threaten retaliation if a deal is not made only reveals your lack of professionalism and respect for other people.

If you think stories like this do not make their way around the industry, you’re wrong. Publicists, musicians, managers, and all other professionals constantly talk about the members of the press they interact with and what their experiences with those individuals is like. If word gets out that you or someone associated with you is behaving in a manner at all like what is describe in the above story then you will not be a part of this industry for long. There are more than enough to good and kindhearted people to fill the jobs we need filled. All others can find another line of work.

Finding your voice is a journey worth the effort

There is nothing worse in music and art than talented people with nothing original to say. The world is filled with people who can play classic songs, but far fewer that can create them. What separates these two groups is a matter of voice, or more specifically the ability to share one’s unique voice with the world instead of relying on the phrasing and perspective of those who came before.

Everyone is unique, so everyone should have a unique voice. The problem is that most people never take the time to ask themselves who they are when removed from everything that influences them. They get so caught up in the woulda, coulda, shoulda moments in life they forget to think about what is actually unfolding and how they feel about those events as they occur. In short, they never find a voice that is their own because they’re too busy worrying how others – usually those who also have no idea what their voice is – will react.

We human beings have a tendency to get ahead of ourselves. As long as our basic needs are covered our mind is provided the opportunity to consider things other than what we are doing one moment to the next. We ponder questions and notions that we have no business considering because we have nothing better to do with our time (or so we tend to believe). We always want to know what’s coming, where we are going, and above all else whether or not we will be safe throughout this wild journey that is life.

The problem with attempting to live and think this is way is two-fold. For starters, those who live life thinking about what might come next are destined to miss out on the present. They are also wasting their time, as the person they will be when whatever comes to pass actually happens is most likely not the person they are today. People are constantly changing, often in ways too small to notice, every day of our lives. Each morning we awake as a new version of ourselves because we now have the understanding of everything that occurred before we last closed our eyes. To fully experience life one must embrace that constant evolution and live within it, growing with each new moment that passes.

In matters of creativity, getting ahead of yourself is a real problem. In order to find your voice and express it you must first learn to live in the moment. Stop looking at your phone, stop talking to the people around you, and for just a few moments focus on your breathing. Consider everything you are thinking and feeling in that moment as you take in the world around you. Don’t settle for surface thoughts of temporary happiness or easily fixed discomfort. Dive deep into yourself and pinpoint exactly what is motivating you to take another breath. This is not so much something you discover as much as realize over time, and no amount of forced efforts will produce the result you seek.

To have a voice is to be comfortable with who you are in the moment. It means understanding that you are more flawed than not and continuing to push forward in hopes of becoming something better over time. You can fool a lot of people by learning to impersonate the greats, but people will always be able to recognize the true originals. There are few things every human is capable of doing, but recognizing an original voice is one of them, and when those people enter our lives we tend to keep them around as long as possible. Why? Because the fact someone else can be unabashedly themselves gives us hope we may one day do the same. That’s all anyone really wants, after all. To be seen and heard for who they are, not who they promote themselves to be, and to be accepted without hesitation.

It may not feel like it right now, but the world is willing to accept you for who you are just as soon as you are able to do the same. Embrace every element of what makes you tick, both good and bad, and set to becoming a better version of the person you see in the mirror each morning. As you do this, share your journey through whatever means help you cope with the stresses of persistent evolution. Don’t hide the bad parts because those are the things people often relate to most. We may all long to be the hero of our own story, but most of the time we feel like the villain. The key is remembering everyone feels this way and that such feelings are normal. Finding your voice isn’t about showing people you have it all figured out, but rather being able to admit the many ways you are still lost. When you do this you attract others who feel they are in a similar position, and through the bond that mutual understanding creates you can find paths to becoming better people together.

If you’re reading this please understand that I appreciate you desire to become a great writer or creative mind as fast as humanly possible, but understand there are no shortcuts. Finding your voice takes time, and until you understand who you really are you will be unable to fully share your unique experience on this planet with others. Make it a point to look inward and in time you will discover the guidance you’ve been seeking have been with you all along. Just be patient, open, and willing to step outside your comfort zone. Everything else will fall into place if you give it a chance.

Overcoming mental blocks in art and business

Anyone trying to make a living with their creativity, from music to marketing, will tell you there are few times in life more frustrating than those moments when you feel as if your inspiration has run dry. You know the feeling. It’s usually something that hits you settle into work on your passion project at night, or perhaps just after you have arrived at the office, and try as you might to get something meaningful accomplished you pretty much just spin your wheels until you feel comfortable excusing yourself in order to spend the rest of the day in a ball of self-loathing introversion on your living room floor, praying to any deity willing to listen that you have enough episode of The West Wing left to avoid you work for one more day. We’ve all been there, or at least those of us who have been working long enough to burn through the first 50 or 100 ideas that we had, and if you feel you’ve yet to reach that point then trust me – It’s on the horizon.

We don’t bring up those uncomfortable times in order to scare. Sd face the same thing on a fairly regular basis, and we like to refer to it as what author Steven Pressfield calls “Resistance.” That is, a universal force that works against human creativity on a daily basis. We all face it in our own ways, much like we all fight our own battles most the world never knows of. There are a million anecdotes and essays on overcoming Resistance, and we’ve offered several here on this blog. Whether or not it works for you can only be learned through application. Yes, good old fashioned trial and error.

The next time you’re confronted with a creative roadblock in your professional life, take time away from your forced search for inspiration and try losing yourself in an alternate path. Develop an alternative path for yourself, your music, your agency, your label, or that secret side business you always hope to one day attempt. These adventures can sometimes be the source of new real life paths, such is the case with many so-called ‘side projects’ in music. Artists from various genres take a break from their day-to-day career to pursue other creative avenues just like anyone else, and sometimes their efforts lead to new financial avenues that certainly don’t hurt their bottom line.

Developing alternative paths to success for yourself can allow your mind to relax and consider options you might not have been able to adequately access when attempting to force creativity. Let’s explore a few examples to better illustrate this point:

Musicians –

Let’s say you’re the lead guitarist and songwriter for an aspiring rock band. Your first demo went over well with local audiences, and the second was good enough to help you secure a few opening slots on national tours when they roll through your region’s bigger venues. You may have even been able to tour, albeit without the benefits of a bus or guaranteed sell out crowds. Still, you’re making progress and you can feel your dreams of stardom starting to come together.

As you find yourself beginning to thinking about your third release, which would probably be your first full length, you discover you have hit a creative wall. Writing riffs and lyrics was never something you found all the difficult before, but for whatever reason everything you’re coming up with at this current point in time is clearly not good enough to help you get you ahead.

To clear your head and relax your thoughts it might be wise to consider an alternative career in, say, top 40 radio pop. Ask yourself, “What would it take to make it in pop music today?” Think about the songs and artists topping the charts, the themes found in their music, and what it is about tracks like Bieber’s “What Do You Mean” or The Weeknd’s “I Can’t Feel My Face” that keeps people reaching for the repeat button again and again. Some answers will come fast, but others will take time. Think about what these artists do that you do not and ask yourself whether or not their approach to marketing or songwriting could aide your personal efforts. Heck, you may even try penning a song or two. Why not? Trial and error is part of any healthy exploration.

By the time you realize how lost in your pretend career you’ve become enough time should have passed for you to return to your real work with clear eyes and an open mind. Remember the things you learned about yourself and your peers during your brainstorming session and use it to influence your future work.

Industry professionals (label owners, site editors, publicists) –

Maybe you’re a label owner, struggling to keep your costs low while hustling around the clock to not only bring attention to the talent on your roster, but also to sell records. The grind required to keep a small business afloat, let alone build a new music empire, can be devastating on the mind of a creative person. One the one hand, your spirit and soul desire constant exercise and exploration. On the other hand, you need to find what works for your business and stick with it.

On those days when you cannot seem to focus on emails, accounting, marketing, or anything in between, it might be best to allow yourself to unwind with by exploring an alternate professional path. Just like the example for musicians above, you should stay within the realm of what you do (aka – running/building a business), but what it is your fake company does is entirely up to you.

For the sake of simplicity, let’s say your secret wish is to start a subscription box company that offers consumers the chance to receive 1 new album in the mail each month, along with an explanation for the record’s selection. The first thing you need for this business is a name. You decide ‘New Music Monthly’ is a good name and from there set to outlining what would be needed in order to get your business off the ground. You need a web host, a logo, and a cost estimate sheet. You know boxes can be bought in bulk, but you will have to contact the labels/artists you wish to work with in order to know if they would be willing to offer you a discount in order for buying X amount of records. You also need startup cash, which can be earned through launching pre-orders for your first box.

After the basic business details are ironed out, you should then turn your focus to understanding the type of customer who would want this product. Assume that your first few music shipments will be products from your own label, then outline what kind of music fan would be interested in whatever release you might choose. Be specific. Narrow down your fans to a specific age group (teens, young adults, adults 25-35, 35+, senior citizens, etc). Do (or did) these people go to secondary school? Do they attend a lot of concerts?

Once you figure this out you can begin to brainstorming how to accomplish the difficult task of targeting these consumers. Do they frequent Facebook? Twitter? Would placement in a magazine be a wise choice? Depending on which method of outreach you choose, how much will it cost? Can you advertise this way regularly, or do you only have the budget for a single campaign? Again, be specific.

Once you iron out your faux business plan you will not only have a potential new path to financial success, but you will have inadvertently developed marketing tools that could also be used for the real problems facing your actual business. The target market for your faux company will likely be the same, or close to the same, as your actual business. The plans you made to reach those made up customers can be applied in one way or another to the customers you are hoping to reach in with your label. You will have more or less done the work you needed to do in a way that tricked your mind into doing work it might not have wanted to do otherwise.

There are a million potential paths through life available to all of us, but far too few ever make much, if any, effort to explore their options. We would never advise you to abandon your dream(s), but we do believe that exploring alternative career paths can lead to success in your current field. What matters most is that you keep an open mind and try as much as you are able without jeopardizing your current professional/financial situation. You can use the examples laid out in the post to get you started, but don’t hesitate to make up your own adventure whenever time allows.

How to ‘make it’ as a music professional

“How do I make it in the business?” This is the number one question any aspiring professional in any field asks their peers. If you want to tour the country full time you look to someone who is currently performing 200 shows a year for advice. If you want to write the next great novel you talk to an author or two who knows what it takes to finish a book. If you want to be run a record label you look at how your favorite labels operate and build off what they have found to be a proven method for success.

Some might call this an act of imitation, but most would call it research. You have to ask questions in order to learn what you do not already know, and if you’re someone looking to work in entertainment then your first question to any peer is probably some variation of what I wrote above. How do you make it? How do you do this full time? Who pays you? Where did you find a job? Who do I talk to about a job? How do you keep a roof over your head? And so on.

The most frustrating, yet entirely accurate response to any version of the question of how one ‘makes it’ is one that has been around long before the internet:

Find something you love to do, pour everything you can into doing it, and — eventually — it will be what you do.

Maddening, right? But it is absolutely true.

I wrote about music for more than half a decade before I met anyone willing to pay me for my words. The years before that had been spent writing in between class and shifts at whatever miserable job I could find. I woke up early and stayed up late, often splitting my nights between covering concerts and writing about what I had seen so that I could go out and cover something else the following evening. Everything in my life took a backseat to my passion for writing, and even though I wasn’t making much, if anything, through doing it my continued efforts to improve gave me an immense sense of personal satisfaction. I wrote with hopes of becoming a writer just as much as I wrote to make myself happy.

By the time anyone other than PPC (pay per click) vendors were willing to pay me for my work I had already established a presence and personal brand in the world of music. I knew the people I once wanted to be and they knew me. I posted about securing a paid gig and several of those same people congratulated me, but within hours they — and I — had moved on. The news money was coming in soon was nice, but I had to focus on the present in order to reach that point where someone paid me. I had established a routine for writing that remained largely unchanged by the presence of paid work because in my mind I was going to be writing either way. My passion for writing was never tied to money so the fact it was starting to come in was — to me— no excuse to act in any manner than the way I was behaving when it felt like no one cared at all.

Years later and I am now a full-time professional doing what I love in the field I love. The journey to this place was filled with ups and downs, but in hindsight I am able to understand every step of the way was necessary in order to handle the demands, challenges, opportunities that working full time in entertainment can present. I have a thick skin, and I know that in order to be my best self creatively I have to care for mental and physical well being. I understand how to network and I know how to write.

There is still plenty left for me to learn, but every morning when I wake up I know I am able to handle whatever life throws at me because of the time I have invested in my craft. Others recognizes this as well, which is why I am able to have a job and continue building my connection. People know I can handle the work, and they know it is ultimately not money that motivates me, but passion. This industry runs on passion.

Once you harness your passion and set to being the best you can be at whatever it is you want to do the rest will begin to fall into place. It won’t happen today, tomorrow, or even next week, but if you stick with something and constantly work at improving yourself the day will come when you finally lift your head and realize you’re where you always wanted to be. It sounds foolish and maybe even a little delusional, but I am telling you it is the truth because it happened to me in spite of the fact I believed such ideas to be nonsense.

No one wants to tell young minds how few of them will actually grow up and do the work needed to reach their goals, but it is the absolute truth. Most people are not willing to do the work, and of those that are many will only work for so long before they demand the world give them something in return. The world owes you nothing. If you want to be something you have to make something out of yourself. Do the work and you will succeed. It’s that easy and that hard.
