A simple trick that will greatly improve your emails

There are more ways to communicate today than ever before. From text messages and phone calls to Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, SecondLine, WhatsApp, GroupMe, Line, and a million competing apps in between, reaching people far and wide has never been easier. Still, none of these methods of communications are as efficient in the world of business as email. Each and every day hundreds of millions of emails are sent all over the world, and the vast majority are attempting to convince the reader to take action of some kind. Does your message stand out? We hope so.

With the right search query, you can uncover countless articles written with the sole intent of helping you craft better emails. Most of these include information you have heard your entire life, like using link shorteners to track clicks or using the receiver’s name in the message. These tips are great, but they mean very little if the receiver does not read beyond the first few words of your message.

Recent research has found that many people stop reading an email after just a few words if they do not immediately feel engaged. There is no secret combination of words and phrases to guarantee engagement that quickly, but there is evidence to support the word that should be avoided, and that word is ‘I’. The use of ‘I’ gives the impression you, the sender, are more important than the recipient. It says “you are expected to do this” and/or “you need to listen to me because I am above you.” This kind of language may work in an office where ranking dictates who must follow orders and who dictates what the orders are, but in most interactions that faux hierarchy does not exist.

You must learn to think through an issue and frame the conversation in the receiver’s context (rather than your own). This not only makes the receiver feel recognized and important, but it allows your request to be received as something you both need to do in order to move forward. You’ve heard the old adage about how there is no “I” in “Team” and the same logic applies here. You want the receiver to feel you are writing as a teammate, someone who is working with them to complete a mutual goal.

All great leaders understand it is not their leadership alone that makes a team or company a success, but rather the cumulative effort of everyone involved. A great leader takes interest in their team. They make everyone else feel as important as they are because they realize their goal cannot be realized without every individual’s participation. When we lift one another up everyone is able to succeed, and the process of uplifting begins with communication.

Maintaining your sanity during the holiday break

If you are reading this post then there is a fairly good chance you are feeling more than a little bored. Maybe you’re a blogger with no new stories to publish, or perhaps you run an indie label where business has slowed in the days since Christmas. Whatever the case, you still have several days until the industry is back in full swing, if not longer. Some industry businesses do not return to a regular work schedule until the week after New Year’s Day, which for 2018 means January 8.

While we admire and applaud your dedication to the craft we also feel it is our duty to tell you that no one person has to be on top of everything all the time. In fact, sometimes it makes no sense to try and do so. The music business is a demanding place where most professionals, meaning those paid and those working for free alike, put in long hours to help those they believe in getting ahead. The daily grind can be killer on even the most dedicated souls, but for two to three weeks every year, there is a lull that almost everyone has agreed to maintain. It is a safe place where people can exhale and stretch and return calls to the family that they have been putting off since before the leaves began to change. That period is the one we are in right now, and it stretches from the days before Christmas until after the start of the new year.

You can work as much as you want during this time, but unless someone is telling you to complete a certain task (or tasks) we encourage you to disconnect. Yes, the company that exists entirely online and relies on clicks to keep the doors open is encouraging you to disconnect from the very thing that keeps its lights on. Some may say such comments are an exercise in self-destruction, but we tend to disagree. We see how much time people put into their work, both on the label side and on that odd the media, which means we also appreciate how much (most) people need a break. They deserve one, in fact.

Those who find the most success in life often cite their breaks or vacations as one of the reasons they perform so well. These people subscribe to the law of diminishing returns, which states that there is a point at which the level of profits or benefits gained is less than the amount of money or energy invested. In simpler terms, just because you work nonstop does not mean your success is also unending. You may succeed for a while, but at some point, you will no longer be able to do whatever it is you do as well as you did when you first started. The reason for this is fairly simple: You are a not a machine. You are not programmed to do one task over and over until you break down and/or are replaced by a superior machine. You are a human in need of food, exercise, and – above all else – rest.

So as you stare at this post and continue clicking over to the tabs containing your various social media feeds we encourage you to consider taking a step back, even if just for one day. Turn off your notifications, leave your inbox unread, and instead spend time doing something solely because it sounds good to you. It can be anything, from time with family and friends, to reading a book, binging a new series on Netflix, or finally learning how to make that pineapple upside down cake you’ve been talking about for months. Choose anything that interests you, just as long as you cannot turn it into work. You want to get music business as far from your mind as possible. Not music, mind you, but the music business. Don’t write content. Don’t draft content. Don’t even think of things as potentially becoming content. Just focus on being present in your individual life and reconnect with the person you are away from the internet. After all, that person – the one you are when existing outside the grind of the industry – is the one who started you on this journey in this business. If you lose that part of you there is no getting it back. As Against Me once sang, “Don’t lose touch.”

Happy Holidays from Team Haulix

We often subscribe to the theory of living a ‘no days off’ lifestyle, but this weekend our entire team will be taking time to disconnect from the internet in order to reconnect with family. The holiday season comes just once a year, and all too often we brush it aside as a time like any other. If we have learned anything in this life it is that holidays are – and have always been – special. They allow people to reconnect in a very grounded way, which in today’s world is increasingly hard to accomplish. Holidays remind us of what really matters, and we hope you’re able to be with those who matter most to you.

2017 has been a very important for us. Between the lessons learned from studying how people use our system, to the interactions we’ve had with clients and users, this year has taught us to see the music business in a whole new light. For so long we and many others have been worried about the future, but in 2017 – amidst one of the most unpredictable cultural and political atmospheres – the importance of music was never doubted. Artists from all walks of life recorded and released important songs, and we were fortunate enough to play a small role in getting that music shared with a world that desperately needed to hear it. We are grateful for that opportunity, and we look forward to doing it better than ever before in 2018.

There is a part of us that wants to continue talking shop and plans, but that is precisely the opposite of what this time of year is about. There will be plenty of opportunities to discuss the future and where we are headed once the next few days pass. For now, we want to do just two things. (1) We want to thank you for another year of business and camaraderie.  (2) We want to wish you a very happy holiday and encourage you to unplug from the internet. We’ll still be here when you return.

3 Tips for improving your music blog in 2018

The new year is almost here, which means right now the music business is largely silent. Industry professionals at all levels tend to lay low in the days between Christmas and New Year’s day, which in turn leaves music writers with little to discuss aside from their picks for the best album, song, new artist, video, etc. of the preceding year. That content is good and expected, but if you really want to make the most of this time you should be putting the majority of your effort and focus into deciding how you will further your work in the new year.

The world of digital music writing has changed immensely over the course of 2017. Dozens of sites went under, leaving writers at every level looking for steady employment, and several sites combined forces because doing so was the only way to stay afloat. The value of digital advertising also fluctuated more than ever, which in turn made it increasingly difficult for sites to cover their costs. 2018 will likely be no different, if not worse, so those hoping to do make it through with their job and sanity intact need to embrace the constant state of change we now exist within and use it to their advantage. Here are three tips to get you started:

Get (more) social

The constant battle to always be producing quality content became even more complicated in 2017 as it seemed every social media platforms was working hard to make their platform the go-to destination for all young people. Snapchat has stories, Instagram has stories, Facebook has stories, and two of those platforms also offer live broadcast options. This, in addition to Twitter, Tumblr, and any other site/platform where fans of music exist.

You will never be able to be everywhere all the time, but if you focus your efforts on maximizing the return from a single platform in the new year your brand is likely to go far. Look at your followers and figure out where you have the most engaged followers. From there, outline weeks or months worth of content that can be created exclusively for that service. Maybe you do artist takeovers, or perhaps you host a weekly talk show. The sky is the limit!

Start a podcast (and if you already have one, keep at it)

The podcast medium garnered a lot of attention in 2017, and it is likely to see even more growth in the new year.

The possibilities with podcasting are seemingly endless; You can record a conversation about a single topic, offer regular news updates, interview people, or simply talk to the world at large — all from the comfort of your home (or anywhere else, for that matter).

Podcasts can be as long or as short as you want, and there is no limit to the number of podcasts you can record. Find a niche that has not yet been filled an fill it with your voice.

Simplicity is an art. Quality > Quantity.

When everything is available with a few clicks and keystrokes the temptation to try and cover all corners of the entertainment world at all times can be great, but for the sake of your health and sanity, you need to resist giving in to such ideas.

There is no way anyone or any one team can cover everything and do a good job. You can cover everything and be pretty mediocre, sure, but being the best at everything just isn’t in the cards.

Find what your audience wants and serve that to them as often and as well as you possibly can.

5 things to consider when planning for 2018

This morning I woke to discover no less than three inches of snow had fallen in the six hours since I last looked outside. After cursing at the sky for a few moments in hopes that whoever or whatever is up there could understand my frustration over winter’s inevitable arrival, I glanced at my calendar and noticed that the year is nearly out. In less than two weeks Christmas will have passed and we will all be killing time as we wait for the new year to arrive. Are you ready? I’m not.

Working online is a constant battle between what you want to be doing and what cultural trends demand that you do. Maybe you want to write a daily editorial on something that matters to you, but you also need to exist on social media, actively market your existing work, and plan for what you will do over the next several days, weeks, months, etc. Heck, I spent more than three hours of my weekend scheduling tweets to run during the holidays so that I might spend a little more time with family and a little less staring at my phone (note I said less and not ‘no time at all’ because – let’s face it – that simply isn’t a reality for most right now).

So there I was, avoiding the cold and contemplating the approaching new year. The one thought running through my mind over and over was what it was I wanted to do in 2018 that I have as of yet been unable to accomplish. I’m sure many of you have or will find yourself internally debating this same question in the days to come if you have not already begun to do so. Most of us never thought we could get a foot in the door of this business, so usually we’re pretty happy just to be here in the moment working on whatever is immediately in front of us, but we owe it to ourselves to look up and think about what could lie on the horizon. It took a world of belief in yourself to get this far, so you – and I – can’t stop now.

Here are a few things I encourage you to think ask yourself when contemplating the places you will go in the year ahead:

Is what I’m doing right now making me truly happy?

No one gets into music because they dislike music, but just because you’ve gotten your foot in the door or found a role that helps pay the bills does not mean your journey has to come to an end, or even stall. We have all spent our lives being told that next to no one makes it in the entertainment business, and because of this we have a tendency to not want to risk what little success we have already found. This may be good for the sake of security, but in the grand scheme of existence all you are really doing by not chasing after exactly what it is that you want to do is restricting a part of yourself. You are preventing yourself from becoming the person you feel you were meant to be in order to please someone or some thing other than yourself. That may provide short term happiness, but it will absolutely create longterm regret. 2018 should be the year you focus in on what makes you happy and pursue it with all the strength you have in your bones.

Am I making the most of my time?

Laziness is a disease that infects us all to varying degrees. What few people will tell you is that the extent laziness impacts your life is entirely in your control. Just like how we all have a habit of settling for the first opportunity that comes our way we also have a habit of wasting time we know could be better spent focusing on our goals. Maybe you tweet too much (guilty), or perhaps you scroll Facebook even after complaining to everyone you know about how awful Facebook is these days (also guilty). Maybe you sleep until the last possible minute every morning and rush to work without eating a good breakfast or exercising (guilty again). Whatever the case, there are things you do on a regular basis that deep down you know are nothing more than a waste of time and resources. Identify those elements in your life and set to minimizing them in the new year. I’m not saying you shouldn’t relax, but if you feel something you are doing is not right you need to listen to that sensation and correct your path.

How can I work towards my goals without sacrificing something I need (work/money/etc)?

Reaching almost any goal requires some kind of sacrifice on your part, but you have to be smart about what you sacrifice or else you may get yourself into trouble. If your passions lie outside your current workplace and you have no other way to make money then you probably shouldn’t quit your job to pursue your dream full time. Dreams require money. Life requires money. You have to make sure your needs are met in order to have the mental clarity needed to pursue your passions. I like to say people should sacrifice within reason, or sacrifice what they are able, as long as it does not interfere with their quality of life in such a way that they are doing harm to themselves and/or their families.

What can I do to improve life for those around me?

If your bucket list for the new year reads like the agenda of a person who has the world’s biggest ego then your brain is leading you down a broken path. Happiness in life comes from much more than personal gain. You know that saying about how it’s cold at the top? People say that because they often reach the pinnacle of their personal journey and realize they have left behind the people, places, and things that mean the most to them. Victory doesn’t have to be a lonely thing, but you have to be conscious about your actions if you wish to lift up everyone around you in 2018. Helping others often improves happiness far more than personal accomplishments, and it does so while developing better relationships with those who mean the most to you.

How will reaching my goals for 2018 help me in 2019 and beyond?

Life is about the journey, not the destination, so you shouldn’t be looking at 2018 and thinking it will be the last year you ever have goals. Knowing where you want to be in two, five, or even ten years can help you figure out what you need to do in the coming months in order to achieve your long term goals. Once you reach them, set more and repeat the process over and over again until you die. Life is for the living. Keep your head up, your hopes high, and never let a bad day, week, month, or even year deter you from chasing after the things you want.

It’s important to note that not all goals have to be long term. If you want to eat the world’s biggest slice or pizza or work your way to running a 5k those things can be done in a relatively short amount of time. My advice is to balance the big goals with smaller, more easy to accomplish ones so that completing those tasks will help keep you motivated to fight for the bigger picture.

How ending net neutrality would kill music blogs

The term ‘net neutrality’ has been commonplace in pop culture for the last few year, but many people still have no idea what it means or how it affect their lives.

In the simplest terms possible, net neutrality is the idea that all things on the internet should be treated equally. The term was coined in 2003 by Columbia law professor Tim Wu, net neutrality stems from the idea that a public information network like the Internet is most useful if all of the content, websites and platforms on said network are treated equally. More specifically, net neutrality is meant to prevent large Internet service providers (ISPs) from slowing down sites or content from their competitors and privileging their own content to increase their revenue.

Net neutrality prevents corporations from controlling your internet experience. For example, because of net neutrality a company like Comcast is not allowed to slow your Netflix stream to a crawl to ensure you don’t stop paying them for cable. Likewise, it prevents Comcast from blocking your access to certain sites based on their content.

Recently, certain people in government have been pushing to end net neutrality. If this were to happen, the power to determine who can access what online and how much they will have to pay to do so will be in the hands of internet providers. Furthermore, those same providers could charge websites fees based on their traffic.

EXAMPLE

In a world without net neutrality, Comcast could change their internet offerings from packages based on speed to packages based on what sites you would be allowed to access. $20 might get you Netflix, Facebook, and Twitter, but nothing else. $30 would get you all of the aforementioned sites, as well as Hulu, Amazon, etc. $40 would get you all over those, as well as additional ‘popular’ sites, and so on.

This would be bad for blogs for a number of reasons:

– The number of total consumers who could access their site would drop exponentially overnight.

– There would be no clear way to ensure any marketing reaches people who can also access your site. Maybe the consumer pays for YouTube and therefore see your ads, but they might not have access to your site.

– New sites that begin to gain popularity will have to pay more and more in order to keep their site online. Failure to do so may cause their site to be throttled to such an extent its too slow for consumers to access.

These problems would impact big and small music blogs alike. The diminished traffic would ultimately impact ad revenue, which in turn would limit how much a site could pay to be reachable. In short, it would take a miracle for anyone to make it out alive.

Net Neutrality would hurt artists and labels as well. Imagine not just paying $10 for Spotify, but an additional fee for the internet package that includes access to Spotify. This kind of ‘nickel and dime’ business will drive away lower income consumers, thus resulting in less streaming royalties for musicians.

There is literally no aspect of repealing net neutrality that benefits the music business. Even Haulix, which is used by professionals around the world to access unreleased music for promotional purposes, would be inundated with extra costs if a repeal were to happen. Prices would have to be raised to meet these new costs, which would be hard for clients to meet considering the loss in streaming revenue.

You can fight the war against net neutrality by contacting your representatives to demand they fight any proposed legislation that does not keep the internet free and equal. More information can be found on SaveTheInternet

A simple solution to writer’s block

If there is one thing that unites musicians and the people who write about them it is the constant struggle to maintain their creativity. It does not matter if you are a blogger or fronting the world’s biggest band, there will be times in this life when you are not able to create at a level you feel is good enough. Call it writer’s block or some kind of mental hurdle, the name doesn’t matter nearly as much as the recognition this resistance is both real and universal. Everyone who attempt to create anything faces these struggles, but that understanding doesn’t make your ability to complete your work any easier.

On a recent episode of his podcast, comedian Joey ‘Coco’ Diaz was speaking with fellow comic Tom Segura about longevity in stand up. Both Joey and Segura are headliners in comedy today, but it took years of hard work and thousands of jokes in order to reach that level. Still, both men constantly find themselves at a creative impasse. While talking about this on air Diaz mentioned advice he once received from legendary comedian Paul Mooney when discussing his creative hurdles. Mooney’s advice was summaries in three simple words: Go get entertained.

I know what some of you are thinking: Get entertained? But I have deadlines! There are people counting on me to finish this thing and it needs to be something great and it needs to be done now!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you’re so stuck that you’re reading articles like this about overcoming mental blocks then the chance of your work being completed to the best of your abilities in the next hour or so is highly unlikely. You have thought about the thoughts you are trying to think too much, which is to say you’ve begun to work yourself in circles. You’re chasing ghosts of ideas you thought you might have at a time other than right now and no amount of searching is going to make them miraculously appear.

Your brain, like your biceps or any other muscle, can only work so much before it needs to rest. In order to work more efficiently your brain needs exercise, which in the case of creative people includes inspiration in the form of experiences. You are the sum total of everything you have experienced up to this point, and those experiences have now become both your source of inspiration and – hopefully – income. In order to continue feeling inspired to create you need to continue taking in new experiences. I say this not just for your work, but for your sanity. You can drive yourself crazy starring at an empty canvas or you can go out, see or hear or touch or taste or smell something that moves you, then immediately feel the need to purposefully create once more.

This may read like common sense to some readers, but the up and comers still trying to get their foot in the door will think it’s crazy because they’ve been taught this industry does not allow for breaks. Who has time to watch a television show, let alone a two-hour feature film, when emails are flowing like water at all hours of the day. Add to this the need to maintain social channels, which can require posting up to (if not more than) ten separate feeds on any given day, and we haven’t even addressed the actual work any creative is trying to accomplish. Writing songs or stories takes time, but so does finding inspiration, and far too often we forget that fact.

You are only human, and your brain is only a muscle. In order to perform at your best you have to rest and exercise, but physically and mentally, on a daily basis. It’s both that simple and that hard, but like any other meaningful routine in life it is worth the effort.

So the next time you find yourself banging your head against a wall while trying to create your next masterpiece try taking a step back for an hour, night, or even a couple days. See a movie, go on a hike, or just put on your favorite records. Spend time remembering why you love the thing you do so you can then share that love with the world at large. We’ll be here, ready and waiting to experience what you decide to share.
