Inside Music Podcast #179: GWAR Attacks!

In what is easily our most explicit and offensive episode to date, GWAR stops by Inside Music to share their perspective on the human condition.

Recently, a Facebook page went viral for suggesting people gather in rural Nevada to raid Area 51, a secretive military base that allegedly houses alien life. Most wrote the page off as a joke, which it was, but several dozen people did meet to celebrate their mutual interest in extraterrestrial life. After all, wouldn’t it be great to know that we are not alone in the universe?

What many failed to realize during this craze was that aliens are already among us. GWAR has been decimating human beings around the world for decades with their unique take on rock and an unbelievable live show. The group is here on Earth to share their knowledge of the universe and cut mankind down to size. They are the judge and jury, the protectors of the heavens, and the ones we were made to worship.

Fans of GWAR find solace in the band’s ruthless approach to satire. Many followers have been doused in blood and other fluids, which often are projected from the corpses of political and cultural figures who are murdered during the group’s performances, and most would tell you such experiences are a right of passage. There is simply no show like a GWAR show.

During a recent stop in Grand Rapids, one member of GWAR sat down with Inside Music host James Shotwell to share his latest insights on the human condition. For nearly twenty minutes, the mysteries of the world’s most outrageous band are revealed in extremely graphic detail. From political leanings to new music, as well as sex, drugs, and the state of rock today, nothing is off-limits in this wild conversation. Enjoy!

The Black Keys explain everything wrong with the music business today [Video]

During a recent appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast, The Black Keys shared hard truths about life in music today.

The success of The Black Keys feels like something out of a movie or novel. Hailing from a place in Ohio most never knew existed, the band has developed a global following with a unique approach to music that leans heavily on the golden age of rock and roll. They have topped charts, both with singles and albums, and regularly perform at some of the biggest venues on the planet. Essentially, The Black Keys have accomplished everything an artist or group could hope to achieve, and they are still going strong several albums into their career.

The math didn’t make sense to The Black Keys, so they ultimately decided to pass on the idea.

The success of The Black Keys feels like something out of a movie or novel. Hailing from a place in Ohio most never knew existed, the band has developed a global following with a unique approach to music that leans heavily on the golden age of rock and roll. The dup has topped charts, and they regularly perform at some of the biggest venues on the planet.

The Black Keys have accomplished everything an artist or group could hope to achieve, and they are still going strong. Most would assume such success makes them happy, but on a recent podcast appearance, the band shared the struggles that may surprise fans.

Speaking to Joe Rogan, The Black Keys first vented about bundling, which is one of the more popular methods of boosting album sales in 2019. The band explained that for every ticket sold they would give five dollars to their label, who would then deliver a download link of their new record to the ticket buyer. However, the ticket sale only counts toward the band’s album sales if the purchaser downloads the album. If 50% of fans who purchase concert tickets download the record, that means The Black Keys are paying their label $10 per record sold. Furthermore, they do not earn royalties on those album sales.

The band then revealed that they had sold roughly 250,000 tickets for their Fall tour, which meant 125,000 fans would likely download the record using links they received from the label. That 125,000 downloads would cost The Black Keys more roughly $1.25 million, which is more than the band was given to make the album.

The math didn’t add up, so The Black Keys passed on the bundling offer.

Rogan was clearly surprised by the revelation, but The Black Keys were only beginning to share their concerns about the industry.

The Black Keys’ latest album, Let’s Rock, is available now wherever you get music. Don’t miss it.

Tips on How to Have Better Cello Performance

Just like any other instrument, getting better at playing cello takes a lot of practice and techniques you deem fitting to have a superb performance.

It’s not just about the number of hours you spent each day to practice compositions, but also maintaining good posture and knowing how to properly handle and take care of your cello that would make you a good cellist.

Here are some tips on how you can get better at playing cello whether you’re just a beginner or amateur:

TIP #01 – PROPER TUNING

You may think that this should be a rule of thumb by any cellist, but many forget that before playing the cello, you should have tuned it properly. A slightly out of tune string can ruin the quality of the composition you desire to play. Nowadays, cellists make use of cello tuner for ease of accurately tuning the instrument. The trick in tuning is starting at the highest to the lowest level.

TIP #02 – SCHEDULE PRACTICES

As what scientific studies show, creating a routine for a specific task eventually leads to a habit. That’s why it’s advisable that you set a practice schedule instead of practicing anywhere and anytime you want.

You should ensure that your practice place is free from any forms of distraction, may it be devices, human voice and whatnot. There’s likely a chance that these distractions might refrain you from achieving your goals.

TIP #03 – BE YOUR OWN MOTIVATION

Do not seek motivation from anyone or anything except for yourself. No matter how much motivational talks you watch and read, it would be all put into waste if you don’t have the heart and mind to actually be good at playing cello. As what would any cellist advice, just get up and start playing. There’s no better day to play than today.

TIP #04 – BE CAREFUL WITH THE ROSIN

One of the common mistakes few cellists make is putting too much rosin on the bow. Applying more than the required amount can prevent the bow from smoothly gliding into your cello. Aside from that, it can cause off tune sounds making the performance loud and out of place. The advisable amount of rosin that you can put is at least five (5) strokes for every performance.

TIP #05 – BE PHYSICALLY PREPARED

Aside from setting your cello appropriately, you should also prepare yourself as parts of your body would be essential in producing quality performance. As much as possible, keep a healthy lifestyle as it can help you to concentrate more and clear your mind. It’s also ideal that you keep yourself active through simple exercises for it can help you in having steady composure in long hours of practicing.

TIP #06 – LEARN BASIC SCALES

Knowing the basic scales is important in playing cello for various reasons. It helps you to properly position your bow and ensure that you’re always on point in the changes of bow directions Aside from that it helps you to check if you’re in tune and if your hands are properly holding both the cello and the bow.

TIP #07 – ALWAYS HAVE FUN

In learning anything, you should always savor the journey. If you only have the mindset of just getting through it, the journey might be frustrating and painful. But if you’ll enjoy every failure, backset, and every second of getting your body and mind in touch with the cello, the path towards becoming a good cellist would be worthwhile and memorable.

These are just some of the tips on rocking a better cello performance. You can always come up with your own techniques on how to improve in playing cello. Always keep in mind that there’s always room for improvement so it’s important to practice everyday.

How to sell more concert tickets without spending more money

There is a type of concert marketing that no amount of money or self-promotion can match. It cannot be fabricated, but anyone can earn it with enough hard work and dedication.

Competition for consumer money in live events has matched and perhaps exceeded the competition in recorded music. Virtually everyone who can tour is doing so, and the vast majority are playing rooms with capacities below one-thousand spread throughout the world. Most markets with multiple venues are hosting ten or more events any given week, and that figure doesn’t include DIY events and underground clubs.

All this tells us that consumers have more options than ever when it comes to choosing live entertainment. The problem is, most consumers don’t necessarily have more money to spend. Each dollar allotted for live entertainment is valuable, and in today’s cutthroat marketplace it is hard to know what promotional efforts will convince consumers to choose your gig over any number of other events.

You already know the basics of concert promotion. It should go without saying that every gig needs an event page on Facebook, promotional imagery, a Bandsintown listing, and numerous mentions across all social media channels. That kind of promotion is considered the bare minimum effort in today’s world, and to be honest — it’s probably not enough.

However, there is one form of promotion that leads to increased ticket sales and returning customers that cannot be bought or artificially created. That kind of marketing is consumer-driven, meaning that its generated by your fans talking to people about your gigs.

But if consumer-driven marketing cannot be bought or faked, then how is it produced? What drives someone to promote an event or artist whose financial gain does not directly benefit the consumer?

Artists should always aspire to create ‘I Was There’ moments during performances. These are moments that fans will remember forever. They will brag about the show to friends and coworkers because something that happened during your set blew them away. They will not think twice to see you again because they will hope to experience another moment just like it in the future.

A great ‘I Was There’ moment does not have to be carefully orchestrated. These moments arise naturally during great performances. They can stem from the delivery of an instrument or vocal in a song, the back-and-forth with the crowd, or the vibe of the night as a whole.

Here’s an example:

Parkway Drive is an Australian metal band with more than a decade of touring experience. The band has a number of radio hits in markets worldwide, but their biggest selling point has always been their live show. The band doesn’t run around the stage a ton or throw themselves into the crowd, but they perform their material masterfully. Furthermore, they do so with a high energy delivery that is downright infectious. They also put a lot of time and effort into their stage production, which makes a big impression on those in attendance. Every show and setlist may be mostly the same, but it is handled so well that people walk away feeling like the show they saw was special.

Sometimes ‘I was there’ moments arise spontaneously and stem from an artist’s response to an unexpected occurrence.

Here’s an example:

Recently, I caught singer-songwriter Jason Isbell performing at a festival. Halfway through his song “24 Frames,” Isbell stopped the show because he noticed someone near the front row was dealing with an emergency phone call. He asked the crowd to be patient while the issue was addressed, and when it was settled, he happily started the song over. The kindness present in his attentiveness to the issue, matched with the precision of his band, made the entire night instantly memorable. It created a story people would share positively, rather than something they might complain about.

I don’t have video of this moment, which makes it all the more special, but you should still hear the song because it’s great.

Creating ‘I Was There’ moments gives people something that no merchandise or social media engagement could match. These moments make gigs feel special and one-of-a-kind, which they are, and that makes people take pride in the decision to their spend time and money on you.

Inside Music Podcast #178: Art Alexakis (Everclear)

Ahead of his debut solo album, Sun Songs, iconic rock musician Art Alexakis stops by Inside Music to share how it all came together.

Art Alexakis is a rock and roll legend. There has rarely been a time in the last three decades where Alexakis’ creativity was not present in the world of pop culture. From his influential work with Everclear to his work on stage and screen, Alexakis has created a path in entertainment that is uniquely his own.

Some may think Alexakis has done everything a person in entertainment could hope to achieve. He’s had numerous singles top the charts of pop and rock radio, toured the world, and went platinum with songs and records in a time when people actually had to visit record stores to purchase music. He was billed as a rock star when the term still meant something, and he continues to hold that title today.

But with all that success and experience, Alexakis still seeks new challenges in his life and art. This October, he will release his debut solo album, Sun Songs, after years of telling himself he would see the record through. The album contains songs that infuse the songwriting and music style fans have come to expect with a wide range of sonic influences that are sure to keep listeners new and old on their toes.

To promote the release of Sun Songs, Art Alexakis recently called Inside Music host James Shotwell to chat about his career, his politics, and his recent infatuation with Bob Seger. The resulting conversation touched on the man Alexakis was when his journey in music began and the one he became through his experience in the spotlight. It’s a revealing look at a person who created the soundtrack to existence for countless millions, and it’s told as one he can tell it.

A Step-By-Step Guide To Making The Most of Your Next Single Release

Your next single release should be the biggest moment of your career to date. Whether or not that turns out to be the case is entirely up to you.

In the streaming era, singles matter as much — if not more — than albums. A single song can determine whether or not someone gives the rest of your music a chance, if they see you on tour, or if they ever think of you again. You have one chance to convert listeners, and most of the time that chance is the first thirty-seconds (or less) of any song you choose to promote.

With this in mind, it is very important that you treat each single release as if it is the biggest thing to ever happen. Your singles should be events that are promoted heavily and celebrated thoroughly. Everyone should know you have a new song, even if they don’t get around to streaming the track themselves.

Thanks to our pal Jesea Lee from High Road Publicity, we now have a seven-step guide to maximizing the value of a single release. Check it out:

Set a release date with enough lead time!

Most artists don’t have enough content to fill two months of promotion for a single song. Maybe you’re the exception, but generally speaking, four to six weeks is an ideal timeframe to promote new music. That allows you time to make sure everyone who cares about your career and many who don’t are made aware of your plans.

Create a Spotify pre-save campaign.

Streaming is king, so you might as well bow down and acknowledge the reign Spotify has over the music business. Pre-saves ensure people don’t forget your new music is released, and they only take a few minutes to create. SmartURL is a tool which allows you to create different geo-redirect links for music & more. It is completely free, although some features are restricted to registered users only (registration is free!). SmartURL has a tool called ‘Pivot’, which will allow you to put all of your URL links into one landing page, such as iTunes/ Google/Amazon/Spotify, etc, and your fans can then choose their favorite service and be redirected to it. If you’re looking to only set up a pre-save, there is a specific ‘Pre-Save’ tool. This is open to registered users. To set up a pre-save on Spotify you’ll need the URI of your release.

Other pre-save link generators exist. Find the service that best meets your needs and use it.

Update your Spotify profile.

When your new single comes out, and the world is finally paying attention, how will people know who you are and what you’re all about? Spotify profiles can feel sparse at first, but you can make the most of them by adding thoughtful bios, tour dates, and plenty of pictures for your fans to enjoy. If you have the budget, please consider hiring someone to help create a bio and other content for your page.

Submit for Official Spotify Playlist Consideration and Release Radar.

Playlists are the new mixtapes. Placement on popular playlists can turn unknown musicians into viral sensations overnight, sell tickets, and get people talking about your music. Spotify has a great tool for playlist submission that will get your song in front of curators who oversee some of the platform’s most popular playlists. Here’s how it works:

  1. Log in or sign up to Spotify for Artists using a desktop computer.
  2. On the ‘Home’ section, click ‘Get Started’ next to the music you’d like to submit.
  3. If it’s an album or EP, choose one release to submit.
  4. Complete the playlist submission form, giving as much information as possible about the track.

Reach Out to Press and Independent Playlists

You know what is louder than you screaming into the void known as internet about your new material? Dozens of people screaming into the void about your new material.

Haulix is used by thousands of artists to reach tastemakers in all corners of the world with fully-customizable promo pages that compliment the music being shared. You can sign up today for a one-month trial, upload your contacts, and immediately begin promoting your music to people in positions of influence throughout the industry.

If you need help finding independent playlist curators, try this post or this one.

Tease on socials.

Your creativity outside of writing and recording will likely determine how much traction your new single receives online, especially from people unfamiliar with your work. Create and share teaser clips, video clips, memes, song lyrics, behind the track information, and anything else you can think of to promote the song’s upcoming release. If you need help coming up with content ideas, especially if you have a limited budget, we recommend learning from artists like Heart Attack Man and Hot Mulligan. Both bands keep their names circulating throughout their music scene without needing to constantly release polished music videos or studio tracks. Just be yourself (in the most creative way possible).

Prepare your release day social posts

The last thing you want to happen on release day is to find yourself scrambling for content. At least five days in advance of your single release, take time to craft a series of social media posts that are unique to each of your channels. Know what you’re going to post to Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, as well as when you’re going to post it. That way, when the day comes, you can focus all your energy on engaging with listeners in real time.

How Couples In Music Make Their Relationships Work [VIDEO]

Aerosmith wrote “falling in love is so hard on the knees,” but there is a lot more at stake than joint stiffness when romance blossoms in the music business.

Whether you’ve been in music for three months or three decades you’ve probably thought about the possibility of falling in love with another industry professional. After all, who else could possibly understand your passion for a business known for long hours and little to no guarantee of success?

If you have shared that idea with someone else in music, they likely warned you that falling for another person in the industry is a horrible idea. The history of entertainment is littered with the pieces of broken hearts from failed relationships between industry professionals. People in music are among the most passionate humans on Earth, but the stress and demands of the workplace often (unintentionally) leak into other areas of life. The struggle to find and maintain a healthy work-life balance is too much for many to bare as individuals, let alone as part of a couple.

But hope is not lost. For every broken heart in music, there are couples who make it work. Some musicians fall for one another, musicians who fall for business professionals, and business professionals who fall for other professionals. Some of these romances last a lifetime, but none do so without a lot of hard work and effort.

We receive a lot of questions about romance in the music business. People ask us whether or not love in the workplace is a good idea, and even if it is — how do you make it last?

There are numerous answers for every situation, but we choose to believe that love between music professionals can be an amazing thing that can create happiness and inspiration for many.

To learn how to make love last, we turned to Ellie Holcomb, musician and spouse of Drew Holcomb, to see how they have continued to pursue careers in music and build a family over their decade-plus together. Here’s what we learned:

You can learn more about Ellie’s music and marriage in a recent episode of our podcast, Inside Music. Check it out:
