Haulix Recommends: The Best New Music of April 16, 2021

From Greta Van Fleet to Cannibal Corpse, there is something for everyone among this week’s best new releases.

Life will probably never be the same as it was before the COVID pandemic took the world by storm. Mourning the loss of the world we knew is normal, but it’s important to recognize all the good that continues to exist. Each new week brings us music that has the potential to change countless lives, and this week’s batch of new releases is no exception. There are too many good records for us to mention, but here are four we believe everyone should experience. This is the best new music of the week.

Greta Van Fleet – The Battle at Garden’s Gate (Republic)

Michigan’s Greta Van Fleet has spent the better part of the last decade becoming one of the most talked-about rock bands on the planet. The group has been the subject of so much discussion that it’s almost hard to believe that they’re only on their second album. The Battle at Garden’s Gate expands on the foundation of previous releases by channeling the influence of several iconic rock acts whose names now adorn the walls of the genre’s hall of fame. But this record is not merely a rehash of things we’ve heard previously. Greta Van Fleet asserts themselves more than ever with this release, and their wide-eyed youthfulness is present throughout the album. The pitch-perfect combination of old and new gives The Battle At Garden’s Gate a sense of timelessness, and it points to a bright future for the band.

Hail The Sun – New Age Filth (Equal Vision)

Equal Vision Records has a knack for finding and nurturing artists that defy easy classification. Hail The Sun, for example, cannot be filed away as either an alternative rock band or post-punk scene darlings. The group is too experimental for radio but not heavy enough for the so-called underground scene, which affords the band space to define themselves. New Age Filth is a progressive and profoundly emotional record that explores a vast range of human experiences to create an all-encompassing look at what it means to live in the world today. By blending their journeys into the record, Hail The Sun keeps things grounded while maintaining lofty ambitions for the future of their music. New Age Filth is, to put it simply, impressive in every way.

Escape The Fate – Chemical Warfare (Better Noise)

Escape the Fate burst onto the rock scene as an amalgamation of 80s hair metal eccentricities and modern alt-rock edge. That image and sound catapulted the group to the forefront of their genre, but they did not let that early success slow their efforts to evolve. The band is now largely sober, far less image-focused, and tighter than ever. Chemical Warfare takes the band’s journey and puts it into song, detailing all the struggles and setbacks that created the men that the members have become over the last decade. It’s a profoundly inspirational collection of tracks written with the hope of influencing positive change that arrives precisely when the rock world needs it most. Where they go from here is anyone’s guess, but fans will be happy to know the band is at the top of their game with this release.

Cannibal Corpse – Violence Unimagined (Metal Blade)

Though many have tried, no one can replicate the heaviness or aggression of Cannibal Corpse. Violence Unimagined, the band’s fifteenth studio album, is the latest testament to the enduring talent of Buffalo’s best export. It’s eleven tracks of masterfully produced and crushingly brutal death metal performed with precision by the people mainly responsible for the genre’s global popularity. Cannibal Corpse has nothing left to prove, and they know it, so instead, they’re making the best music they can — as only they can — for the benefit of metal fans everywhere.

The Offspring – Let The Bad Times Roll (Concord)

Over three and a half decades into their career, The Offspring continue to deliver their signature combination of so-cal punk and alternative rock with Let The Bad Times Roll. Many groups would be happy to rest on the success of their catalog, but Dexter Holland and crew push forward. Their latest channels the frustrations of the past year and the many ongoing terrors of the world into a collection of songs that demand listeners find joy wherever they can. Make no mistake: Let The Bad Times Roll is not about ignoring all the wrongs in the world. It’s about finding happiness amid the chaos and how creating spaces for others to do the same will make this planet more hospitable for everyone.

Haulix And Season Of Mist Release New Season of High Notes Podcast

High Notes, the world’s first addiction and recovery podcast set in the music business, returns today with three new episodes.

Today – Tuesday, March 23, 2021 – Haulix.com, the music industry standard for promotional distribution, and leading metal label Season of Mist are thrilled to share a new season of HIGH NOTES, the critically-acclaimed podcast about addiction and recovery in the music business. The three-episode series is available now on all podcast platforms, including the Music Biz YouTube Channel.  https://linktr.ee/highnotes

“We at Season of Mist are extremely thankful for the meaningful work that [host] James Shotwell is doing with High Notes. We are so proud of our artists and friends of the label who came together to share their stories of addiction and recovery, a feat that requires much courage as there is still a dark stigma attached to this often misunderstood illness. We hope to help erase that stigma and, more importantly, that these stories will help those who are struggling to know they are not alone and that recovery is possible.”

Guests on the latest season of High Notes include Aðalbjörn “Addi” Tryggvason of Sólstafir, Roger LeBlanc of Numenorean, and influential artist manager Erin Lynch. Descriptions for each episode are as follows:

Episode 1: Aðalbjörn “Addi” Tryggvason of Sólstafir is a metal legend. For the better part of thirty years, he has brought Icelandic post-metal and black metal to the masses. His music is influencing up-and-coming artists worldwide, and hopefully, his journey in recovery will as well. Addi recounts how a wild night involving sex, drugs, alcohol, and a symphony orchestra changed his life forever. He also recounts tales of debauchery, including trashed hotel rooms, and how his sense of what it means to be a quote/unquote “rock star” has changed with time.

Episode 2: Roger LeBlanc is the vocalist and guitarist of Numenorean, a Canadian metal band that joined the Season of Mist roster in 2016. Roger led a typical life of touring and drinking until his partner said his behavior needed to change. That single interaction, coupled with a lifetime of watching people succumb to their demons, lead Roger to make major changes in his outlook on life. Roger tells us why it’s so important to destroy the stigma surrounding addiction and mental health struggles, especially in the world of heavy metal.

Episode 3: Artist Manager and live event extraordinaire Erin Lynch is the first non-musician to appear on High Notes. She has never topped the Billboard charts or rocked a crowd of thousands at a music festival, but Erin plays an integral role in helping countless artists achieve their dreams. Her presence on our shows shines a light on the reality of life for those who work behind-the-scenes to make rock and roll exist. She also offers guidance for those who want to change but are hesitant about confiding in those around them.

The first podcast of its kind, HIGH NOTES features exclusive, in-depth conversations with rock and alternative musicians in various stage of recovery. Guests from the first two seasons include Shannon Larkin of Godsmack, Brian “Head” Welch of KoRn, Craig Mabbitt of Escape The Fate, Eric Christopher of Hospital Bracelet, Clint Lowery of Sevendust, Amanda Lyberg of Eva Under Fire, Donovan Melero of Hail The Sun, Bert McCracken of The Used, Anthony Green of Circa Survive, and more. Each episode delves into a different guest’s journey to sobriety and the role the music business played in helping (or hurting) their recovery.

“At Haulix, in addition to taking care of our customers, we take pride in using our industry reach to educate and shine light on topics less heard about, like addiction and recovery,” says company founder and CEO Matt Brown. “Our High Notes series lets us tap into real world experiences spoken by the artists themselves.”

Seasons 1 and 2 of High Notes are available now on all streaming platforms. The show is produced with support from the amazing teams at heartsupport and the Global Recovery Initiatives Foundation.

Watch The Full Rude Records 20-Year Celebration [VIDEO]

One of the most influential international labels of all-time, Rude Records celebrates twenty years of success with a special Haulix LIVE! event.

Making your way in the music world today takes a lot more than talent and luck. Just ask Rude Records, one of the most influential alternative labels of the modern-day. Over the past two decades, Rude has helped talent from all walks of life reach a global audience of devoted music fans through hard work and innovative marketing that cannot be topped. In an industry filled with knockoffs and slackers, the team behind Rude Records is pushing boundaries wherever possible and refusing to give in.

On Thursday, January 21, Music Biz host James Shotwell spoke with two Rude Records team members to celebrate the label’s twentieth anniversary. This is a recording of that event.

About the Rude Records Team:

Ilich Rausa began to be curious about the Music Industry during his early University years and his career was launched thanks to a position with one of the largest indoor venues in Milan, Italy. During this period, he learned about band and audience development, promotional and marketing strategies. He founded Rude Records with a friend, a sound engineer, at the end of 2000 and from that moment on, moved particularly by the passion of its founders, Rude Records started to take its first steps with the production and distribution of young alternative bands. Ilich focuses on label strategy and development and works with the team on the development of new partnerships, growth plans, and budgeting. Ilich also oversees operations, contracts, and human resources. Rude started representing some Labels from the US in Europe from 2004 and eventually started to sign international bands for EU, UK and North America. Rude Records counts now over 200 releases and has collaborators all over the world and works closely with bands from the US, UK, Australia. In 2020 Rude Records has signed a Publishing deal with The Orchard \ Sony ATV and renewed a global distribution deal with The Orchard \ Sony Music.

Federico Croci‘s deep passion for music started when he first learned how to play an instrument. This led to discovering old classics hidden in his father’s vinyl collection and writing reviews and interviews for a music webzine. Federico is continually eager to know and discover new music, new artists, across all genres. After graduating from University in Media Languages, he obtained a Master’s Degree in Music Industry. He joined Rude Records as PR and Marketing intern in 2011, actively participating in the Label’s development and strategic growth through the years. Ten years after making the first steps in the music industry he’s now Rude’s General Manager and A&R, responsible for scouting new talents and assisting them throughout the whole creative process.

How Music’s Biggest Names Reach Influencers And Press

There are countless ways to contact influential people, but only one affordable platform for music promotion is trusted by labels and artists worldwide.

The music business has undergone countless evolutions over the last century, but one thing that remains the same is the importance of relationships. Success is rarely a matter of who writes the best song or creates the best press kit. The talent that rises through the underground and becomes household names do so because of their ability to network. They put themselves out into the ether, making their talent and personality known, and they connect with like-minded individuals searching for an opportunity to build something that stands out from the competition.

There are no tricks or cheatsheets that can manufacture the power of honest relationships, and without them, there is no tool or advice we can offer that will make you a star. If you don’t have contacts yourself, hire someone that does, and make sure to check their credentials.

The biggest names in music understand that music promotion is a crowded field wherever everyone is essentially selling the same thing. They have songs, artwork, press photos, artist bios, and personality. You can package these items in a billion different ways. Still, the core elements are the same, and the influencers who shape culture wake every day to a seemingly endless number of requests for their limited attention.

What separates breakout stars from overlooked talent lies in how they present their material. Soundcloud, Dropbox, and Google Drive may make sharing content easy, but each service severely limits an artist’s ability to express themselves. Most Soundcloud landing pages, for example, include large branding and ads for Soundcloud services. Google Drive and Dropbox offer a more straightforward UI. However, the appearance is so bland that the only reason anyone would click on the links on said pages is because of a pre-existing familiarity with the material.

The best way to cut through the clutter and make a lasting impression on influencers is Haulix, the industry’s leading promotional distribution platform. Haulix makes it easy for professionals at every entertainment level to create eye-catching promotional emails and landing pages that emphasize an artist’s brand and music. BMG, Concord, Rise Records, Metal Blade Records, Pure Noise Records, and many other labels, independent artists, and publicists already trust Haulix. There are multiple affordable plans to choose from, and each comes with a one-month risk-free trial.

Haulix promos are great whether or not users choose to customize the default template. Each promo pages makes it easy to share the artist, album title, label, release date, cover art, record description, promo photos, music videos, and music. Here is one example of a promo with no customization:

If users do choose to customize their promo pages, great designs are just a few clicks away. Here is an album promo put together for You, Me, And Everyone We Know’s recent live album. As you can see, the page is customized to match the artwork’s colors, and a banner is present to emphasize the band’s branding.

Haulix also makes it easy to create engaging promo invitations that provide your contacts with unique links to your music. Each contact has a personal link, which allows you to track each person’s engagement with your music. You can view email opens, song streams, and downloads.

But the offerings don’t stop there! Haulix also has tools to generate reports, manage teams, and watermark your music. You can learn about all of this and more on the company’s website.

“At Haulix, in addition to taking care of our customers, we take pride in using our industry reach to educate and shine a light on topics less heard about, like addiction and recovery,” says company founder and CEO Matt Brown. “Our High Notes series lets us tap into real-world experiences spoken by the artists themselves.”

The second season of HIGH NOTES features exclusive, in-depth conversations with rock and alternative musicians in various recovery stages. Guests include Shannon Larkin of Godsmack, Craig Mabbitt of Escape The Fate, Eric Christopher of Hospital Bracelet, Ben Liebsch of You, Me, And Everyone We Know, Clint Lowery of Sevendust, Amanda Lyberg of Eva Under Fire, Donovan Melero of Hail The Sun, singer/songwriter Janet Devlin, Trevor Hedges of Sundressed, and indie newcomer Kat Hamilton. “We believe in the power of conversation,” says host James Shotwell. “The second season of our show looks at addiction and recovery from a variety of fresh perspectives. The discussions we have can be tough to hear at times, but we always emphasize hope. We want everyone listening to know that there are always people who love and believe in them no matter how bad things appear. Our team and our guests want to cheer on our audience the same way they cheer for their favorite musicians.”

The first season of HIGH NOTES premiered in July of 2020. The 8-episode season featured Brian “Head” Welch of KoRn, Tommy Vext of Bad Wolves, Bert McCracken of The Used, Anthony Green of Circa Survive, Haley Butters of Absinthe Father, Nick Martin of Sleeping With Sirens, Ronnie Winter of The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, and Justin Furstenfeld of Blue October.

HIGH NOTES’ entire second season is available starting today, July 28. https://linktr.ee/highnotes.

Episode descriptions:

2.1 Eric Christopher (Hospital Bracelet)

A recent star of the indie punk scene, Eric Christopher of Hospital Bracelet, discusses the relapse that led them to reconnect with music and launch their career. They also share the importance of mantras, finding a supportive community, and sharing your journey.

Hospital Bracelet’s debut album, South Loop Summer, arrives in 2021 through Counter Intuitive Records.

2.2 Ben Liebsch (You, Me, And Everyone We Know)

For Ben Liebsch, a lifetime spent trying to outrun childhood traumas inevitably led to years of drug and alcohol abuse. His problems reached a boiling point in the spring of 2011 when every member of his band quit, leaving Ben to sift through the things he’d worked so hard to avoid. Ben tells us how confronting his past allows him to live in the present and how processing his experiences ultimately led him back to making music.

2.3 Amanda Lyberg (Eva Under Fire)

Amanda Lyberg has known the destructive power of addiction her entire life. Raised by addicts, Amanda spent years trying to understand their struggles, which eventually led to a career in clinical psychology. In this episode, Amanda shares her pivotal life experiences and how she works to make the world a better, more understanding place both in and out of music.

2.4. Clint Lowery (Sevendust)

Clint Lowery is a modern rock icon. He’s done everything a rockstar can, but he realized many years ago that the version of stardom found in movies and television shows is no way to live. Here, Clint recounts the day he chose to change his life and details how the Serenity Prayer’s lessons changed him for the better.

2.5. Donovan Melero (Hail The Sun)

Once a shy teen with dreams of making a living in entertainment, Donovan Melero saw drugs and alcohol as a way to escape his insecurities. Over time, however, he realized that running away from your problems never leads to peace. Here, Donovan tells us how opening up about his difficulties helped him find a community that supported him on the path to recovery.

2.6 Trevor Hedges (Sundressed)

Sundressed vocalist and founding member Trevor Hedges knew he had to make a change after a run-in with law enforcement nearly derailed his life. Thankfully, he found purpose in making music to help others, and his devotion to developing his talent has kept Trevor on the path to recovery for over a decade.

2.7 Janet Devlin

Fame is difficult for anyone to handle, but it’s perhaps hardest on young people. After gaining international attention through reality TV at the age of 16, Janet Devlin fell into addictive behaviors while feeling isolated from the outside world. She uses her time on High Notes to tell us how a combination of recovery groups and therapy saved her life on more than one occasion. It’s a darkly funny look at the work involved in getting betting, but it’s as honest as any conversation we’ve shared.

2.8 Craig Mabbitt (Escape The Fate)

When Craig Mabbitt joined Escape The Fate, his image was a hard-partying rockstar with a look and attitude similar to Motley Crue in their prime. That lifestyle was fun for a while, but deep down, Craig knew it could never last. Fast-forward to 2020, and Craig is in his first year of sobriety, which has unfolded amid a global pandemic.

2.9 Shannon Larkin (Godsmack, Apocalypse Blues Revival)

Shannon Larkin is music royalty. Best known as the drummer of Godsmack and The Apocalypse Blues Revival, Larkin has contributed to some of the most influential rock records of all-time. He’s been everywhere and done everything that musicians dream of achieving, but his most significant accomplishment happened just four years ago when a motorcycle accident pushed him to get sober.

2.10 Kat Hamilton

Kat Hamilton is a fast-rising musician who channels the years she spent dealing with intense addiction and trauma into her songwriting. Kat uses her time on the show to discuss the therapeutic qualities of sharing your truth and lessons learned in recovery.

If there is anything to learn from the age of COVID-19, aside from the need for personal hygiene, it is the importance of connection. Human beings are not meant to live in isolation. Haulix LIVE! is not a perfect solution, but it has the potential to keep us connected until life as we knew it resumes.

The event is free, but attendees must register in advance to ask questions. Click here to RSVP TODAY!

About our panelists:

Hailing from the great state of New Jersey, Chris Hodge has spent over a decade working in both Artist Management and Tour Management. After time well spent touring the world and learning from some incredible colleagues, he created Bronson Ltd. a little over a year ago with a mission to continue to grow and build both a passionate and successful artist and management team. Trying to learn every day while not forgetting where he came from.

Kevin Garcia has been involved in the Music Industry since he started playing and promoting shows in his local scene at the age of 15. After 10 years of touring, fulfilling both performing and tour management duties, he found a strong passion for developing artist careers. Kevin began to transition into day-to-day Artist Management and brought his roster to the Bronson Ltd. family in 2019.

After years playing in local bands, Jesse Lebhar got his real start putting on shows in the Tampa Bay Area, as well as booking tours and tour managing for his friends’ bands. He started pursing a career in the music industry earnestly in late 2016, working his way up from tour manager, day-today manager, co-manager, and now working as a full-time manager. Marcee gathers inspiration from every medium of pop culture: the latest books, fashion (including the search for the perfect handbag) and decorating trends, along with capturing images of daily life (with her trusty iPhone camera and lenses) for social media.  As for the music, it’s really all about the next great song, “I’m in love/What’s that song?/I’m in love with that song.”
