Haulix Weekly Update #68 – “My Pudding Is Trapped Forever!”

Hello, internet friends! The end of the work week has arrived once more, and this time it is made extra special by the fact it is also the day many begin their long-awaited holiday breaks. The Haulix team will be working nearly every day ahead, but we’re thrilled those of you who put in long hours all year long are finally able to get some rest. If you work a job that offers no break at all, maybe this song from San Diego’s Sledding With Tigers will inspire a new year’s resolution or two:

Each and every Friday we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

We have development updates! We have development updates!

Just like Santa scurrying down your chimney, Haulix-claus is here with a special development update that impact clients and press alike. Clients have always been able to send multiple promos in a single email. If it’s a one-promo email and the contact clicks the link, it goes directly to the promo screen — no passcode required. From there, if they click on Promos, it prompts for the passcode. If it’s a multi-promo email and they click the main link on the bottom of the email, it USED TO prompt for the passcode. We updated the system so that it passes them through — no passcode. They go to a screen that has all of the promos from the email. They can then click the one they are interested in, thus streamlining the process for everyone involved.

On the blog end of things, we like to think the end of December has quickly become one of the most exciting times of the entire year. While many sites are slowing their content creation efforts, our team is working hard to bring you the best advice and most in-depth interviews available anywhere online. We’re not taking Christmas week off, and you can bet all the sass found online we’re not taking a break for the new year. We’re here for you, and as long as you’re ready be inform we’ll be ready to teach.

If you missed anything this week, here is a quick rundown of our recent content offerings:

New Client Feature – Promo Groups

Hello, everyone! We typically fill this blog with advice and insight on modern music industry, but this afternoon we have an internal announcement we’d like to share instead. We have been receiving requests for a grouping feature since at least 2012, and today we’re rolling out a new tool for clients that does just that. Don’t worry – we’ll have more info on life in the business for you soon.

This blog exists to promote the future of the entertainment industry, and to do that we need input from people like you and your entertainment-loving friends. If you have any questions about the content in this article, or if you have an artist you would like to see featured on this blog, please contact james@haulix.com. We can also be found on Twitter and Facebook.

New Feature – Promo Groups

Greetings!

Continuing our recent string of platform updates, we are pleased to announce Promo Grouping — a feature that will simplify your organizational efforts. This tool is one we have received many requests for, and we think you’ll find implementing it to be incredibly easy:

Sign into your Haulix account. On the Dashboard you will see your current promos listed at the bottom of the screen.

To begin creating Groups, first click the ‘Promos’ tab at the top of the page. When the new page loads, click the ‘Groups’ button at the top of the page. A new window will open and ask you to name your new group. Enter the desired title and click ‘Create.’ Another window will ask you to confirm the information. Agree and your new group will appear on the left rail of the ‘Promos’ page.

Once the Groups have been created, it’s time to organize your promos. Using the list of promos on the left rail, drag and drop each promo name underneath the group you want it assigned to. If you would like to organize the order in which the groups appear, use the arrows next to each group title to move them up or down the list.

You can also assign your new promos to a group as they are made. When editing a promo, click the ‘Groups’ dropdown list on the promo screen and select the group you wish to assign that particular promo to:

The Groups created on these pages and the promo order set in place will immediately be reflected on your Dashboard and Invitation screens.

Deleting a group is as easy as creating one. Return to the ‘Promos’ screen, click ‘Groups,’ then click the red ‘X’ next to the Group you wish to remove. Deleting a group will not delete the promos contained within that group.

Please note: Promo groups cannot be added or deleted by Sub-Administrators. Only Master Account holders are able to create and organize promo groups.

Haulix Weekly Update #58 – Does Anyone Listen To Morning Zoos in 2014?

We have started almost every one of our recent updates by introducing you to an up and coming artist we love. This week we made it a point to highlight the fact we often work with comedians as well, so we thought it would be a nice change of pace to feature one of our favorite comics at the top of this update. You may have heard of Marc Maron because of his hit show on IFC, but he’s been a standup for many years, and his recent ‘Thinky Pain’ special has kept us laughing throughout 2014. You can view the special on Netflix right now, but here’s a clip to get you started:

Each and every Friday we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

We have dev updates! We have dev updates!

We have been teasing new product updates for the past several weeks, and in recent days we were finally able to unveil on project that has been taking up a lot of our time.

Our promo distribution platform has long allowed for customization, but this week we took those efforts one step further by allowing for fully transparent promo creation. This means clients have more options than ever before to make each promo reflect the artist its meant to represent. Here’s an example of what a promo created using this feature can look like:

Want to do this with your next promo? Log into your Haulix account and follow these steps:

1. Click on Promos

2. When you have your promo selected, click on the Design button

3. In the upper right Design column, click the drop down list and select New…

4. Give your template a name and Create

5. In the right column, click to upload a background image.  You can either use one wide 2000px image that does not repeat or upload a small tile and repeat it.

6. With your background image uploaded, adjust the other colors and check both of the “transparent” checkboxes.

7. Click the Save button

8. Click to Preview your promo

TIP:  Create a semi-transparent header image (870px wide) and upload it. Your background will blend into the header image.

ON THE BLOG END OF THINGS – we do not have any updates as cool or innovative as the one mentioned above. We do, however, have a lot of new content. In the past seven days we conducted over a dozen interviews, including three new podcast episodes, two artist spotlights, two blogger spotlights, and multiple industry features. To say the fall/winter will be exciting would be an understatement.

Here’s a quick list of everything we ran this week. If you missed anything, now is the time to catch up:

That’s all we have for this week. Thank you for your continued support. Have a safe and fun weekend. We’ll be back tomorrow with another piece of content for you to enjoy.

Best,

Haulix

Haulix Weekly Update #55: What To Do In Denver When Your Internet Sucks

Hello, everyone! We know we are a couple days behind on getting this update to you, but please do not feel as if you have been forgotten. James, the guy who runs this blog, has been on vacation in Denver and his hotel’s wifi proved less powerful than advertised. He sought a better connection, and we are now able to share our long-awaited weekly recap with all of you.

Each and every Friday we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

That introduction may have lead you to believe the delays were perhaps due, at least in part, to new advancements on the development front. While it is true that we have some major changes in the pipeline, they are not quite ready for the public just. I want to say that we will have something to share by the end of the Month, but considering the fact that date is a little over a week away I’m not sure it will happen. October however, will be insane.

On the blog end of things, the second to last week of September proved incredibly busy. Prior to leaving for Denver, James logged 4 new interview, secured a half dozen features, and did a ton of press outreach. We know you probably do not care all that much about how our publicity efforts are going, but we are working to further our brand recognition through things like the blog and the recently launched podcast.

In case you missed anything this week, here is a roundup of our latest content offerings:

Haulix Weekly Update #50 – You Are Now Entering A No Flex Zone

“I have never in my life found myself in a situation where I’ve stopped work and said, ‘Thank God it’s Friday.’ But weekends are special even if your schedule is all over the place. Something tells you the weekend has arrived and you can indulge yourself a bit.” – Helen Mirren

I don’t know about your way of living, but I never question the words of a woman who once portrayed The Queen. Friday is here, and that means it’s time to let go of the week’s frustrations and embrace the freedom the weekend represents.

Each and every Friday we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

Starting with the development side of things, we are currently taking steps to add a sixth media server to our platform. Our growth in 2014 has been overwhelming in the best possible way, so we’ve dedicated the last several weeks to refining our platform and planning for additional growth in the future. We’re ready for whatever the world brings our way, and in the months to come that will likely include a few additional development updates that I’ve been told I’m not allowed to share with the public just yet. Trust me, it’s coming.

On the blog side of the company, the past several days have been littered with brainstorming sessions for future advice columns and over a dozen interviews. We know the past few weeks have been heavy with editorials, but in the months to come there will be a very large resurgence of Spotlight columns. We’re also bringing back our podcast, only this time with the kind of studio-quality audio you expect from such broadcasts.

I know how busy the week was for us, so I can only imagine the type of work all of you had to complete before reaching this point. In case you missed any content we ran in recent days, use the links below to catch up:

Haulix Weekly Update #46 – 2 Big Announcements!

“When there’s no more room in hell, the dead will walk the Earth. When there’s no more time on the clock, the workers will run free. It’s Friday. Be free.” – Anonymous

Each and every Friday we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

THIS WEEK HAS BEEN INSANE! We have a lot to cover, so go ahead and strap yourself in. We’re about to dive deep into the world of Haulix HQ.

First up, on Tuesday we were finally able to release our long-awaiting first promotional video. This fully animated clip, which can be viewed below, explains who we are and what we do to help press and record labels alike in less than 2 minutes. We have already placed the video on our official website and will continue promoting it through various channels in the weeks ahead. Check it out and let us know your thoughts:

After the video was live and circulating around the web we turned our full attention to the second big reveal of the week: The Haulix Profile System.

Yes, you read that right. After months of requests from we have launched a new profile system that not only allows members of the press to see what labels have them listed as a contact, but it also gives them the power to control what email addresses they are contacted at and who can contact them. When a member of the press changes their information that data is then updated on the contact page for every label that has that person listed as a contact.

To access the Profile screen, you must first access a Haulix promo. Once on that page, click the ‘Promos’ button at the top of the screen.

Next, enter your 4-digit code. If you do not have one, or if you think you may have forgotten yours, click the help button located below ‘Submit’ and you will be sent instructions on how to reset this part of your Haulix experience.

On the ‘Promos’ screen, click the ‘Profile’ button in the top left corner of the page. There may be red lettering that says ‘NEW’ next to the button.

Welcome to the ‘Profile’ page! Here you can reset your 4-digit passcode, verify alternate emails, and view a complete list of every label that has named you as a contact. All verifications require email confirmation, but those confirmation emails are sent immediately after each request is made. Unsubscribing, however, is immediate. [Emails omitted for privacy]

We will feature a more in depth run down of this feature in the days ahead. For now, click around and become acquainted with our latest tool. If you have any question, just email james@haulix.com and we’ll do our best to assist you.

OKAY – onto the blog.

It seems a little silly to talk about the blog at length after every thing we discussed above, but it has been a pretty big weak for this little site as well. We launched our first-ever podcast on Monday, and in the days that followed featured 2 one-of-a-kind artist interviews that we are continuing to receive positive feedback for, not to mention the Advice column that also ran this week. Haulix Weekly Update #44 – “Where were you last week?”

The final Friday of June has finally arrived, and I am willing to wager if you are reading this the afternoon it goes live that you have spent roughly 20-120 minutes staring at the office clock, waiting for the moment when five o’clock arrives. If so, go ahead and pat yourself on the back. You have just completed the final full week of the six month of 2014. You’re only a few short months from changing leaves, falling snow, turkeys, and that fictional fat guy who loves sliding down chimneys. What better reason to celebrate could you need?

Each and every Friday we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

The past week at Haulix HQ has been filled with new feature testing and development. We are only a few short weeks past the launch of our Piracy Takedown service and already we have another new update to roll out to users. I don’t want to go too in-depth until the final offering is complete, but let’s just say that the act of contact organization and data gathering is about to be simplified. We should have more details next week.

On the blog end of things, life has been a little crazy. James, the guy who writes run this blog, fell ill near the end of last week and spent most of the last few days working at whatever odd hours of the day he found himself not drowsy or otherwise feeling lethargic from his recovery. That said, we did manage to finish the VERY FIRST HAULIX PODCAST! We also recorded and transcribe roughly half a dozen new features, all of which will run sometime during the month of July.

We know the work week can be demanding, so in case you missed any of the posts we featured in recent days we put together this handy list of links to easy catching up and review:

Rest In Peace: Moshing

Industry Spotlight: Chris Hansen (No Sleep Records)

Repeat After Me: I Will Not Pay To Play Shows

Blogger Spotlight: Kari Hana (15 Minute Media)

Blogger Spotlight: Christie Laabs and Sadie Q. (Hip In Detroit)

How To Kill Your Band #10 – A Conversation With Hopesfall’s Adam Morgan (Part 2 of 2)

That’s all we have for now. There is a major holiday next week, but that will not impact the flow of content on this blog. We’ll see you tomorrow!

3 Ways To Increase Engagement With Your Haulix Promo

Hello again, everyone. We thought we would celebrate the arrival of June with a surprise second post this afternoon, so below you will fine a column aimed at helping Haulix clients increase engagement with their promotional invitations. If you have any questions about the content of the blog, or if you would like more information regarding the distributional services offered by Haulix, please email james@haulix.com and share your thoughts. You can also find us on Twitter and Facebook.

Haulix is the most preferred and trusted distribution service amongst music bloggers, but it can often be hard for even the best artists to make writers engage with their promo. As music writers ourselves, we understand that this is not always a result of bloggers not caring, but more often than not is due to a lack of time on the bloggers’ part to properly interact with every promotional invitation that comes their way. We cannot guarantee how many clicks any single promo will receive, but by following the tips below clients can increase the likelihood that bloggers will want to engage with their promos:

Customize Your Promo Design

Over the last several years the Haulix development team has strived to create a system that looks good ‘out of the box,’ but at one point we realized that in order to serve our clients needs promos needed to be customizable in order to grab the attention of distracted/rushed bloggers clicking through cluttered inboxes. With this in mind our team built and released a number of tools and options for promo creation, including color changes, multiple messaging option, image inclusion/placement, banners, backgrounds, and more. That list may seem overwhelming, but we believe our design has made these tools easy-to-use, even for novice publicists.

There are well over 5000 promo invitation sent out using the Haulix platform every day, and that is not even considering the thousands likely sent out on our competitor’s platforms, or the artists contacting journalists through file sharing services (mediafire, dropbox, etc). If you or your client are still struggling to gain the attention of the press, customizing your promo design should be the first course of action to try and spur a few additional clicks. For additional information on getting started with customization, click here for a three step guide to creating eye-popping promos.

Personalize Every Promotional Message

As your contact list grows, it can be very tempting to send the same promo to every single contact, or at least a large portion of your contacts, at the same time. After all, time is of the essence when working on album promotion, and if we’re being completely honest the information shared with one person is almost certainly the information you will share with every person you message. The problem, however, is that no writer likes to feel like they are just another faceless entity you leverage for free content. Like musicians, many writers have fragile egos, and they like to feel as if they are needed and or wanted by the world. Generic press promotions are a dime dozen for them, but personalized messaging in much more rare.

There is no doubt that sending out a generic promo to a large enough contact list will receive engagement, but content delivered with a personal touch will almost assuredly perform better with press. When you write to people and use not only their name, but facts about who they are and/or what they do you convey a sense of caring that forges a much stronger connection than a message delivered with marketing lingo and sales information could ever hope to achieve. If people believe you care for them and take in interest in what they do they are far likelier to want to work with you, regardless of what type of content you are trying to push. Networking is a force like no other, and learning to network well can make a world of difference in the trajectory of not only your career, but the careers of everyone you know as well.

Send out reminders, especially when promos are about to expire.

This may seem like a given, but having spent over half a decade writing about music I can tell you first hand that only a small percentage of publicists/bands ever follow up on the invitations that they send. They might resend that same promo, sure, but actually taking the time to reach out to individuals with personalized messaging to remind them a promo is available or alert them that promos may expire is far more rare.

Make time for reminders. The average music writer receives well over 100 emails a day, and as much as they may desire to give attention to every email that catches their interest there is simply not enough time in the day for such a thing to occur. Many probably tell themselves they will catch up the next day, but then they awake to 100 new messages and the process starts all over. Reminders add to this clutter, yes, but they also reenforce the messaging you are trying to convey. Sending reminders gives you another chance to grab a writer’s attention, and taking the time to personalize the messaging further increases the likelihood of engagement/response.
