Inside Music Podcast #165: Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes

After releasing one of the year’s most devastating records, Frank Carter stops by Inside Music to discuss the strength of vulnerability and his aspirations for the future.

Our culture is changing, but there are generations of men walking the planet today who were raised with the belief that showing emotion somehow makes them weak. For decades, men have been told to hide their struggles and to suppress any sadness because no one would respect them if the weight of the world was present on their face.

Frank Carter does not give a damn about your pre-conceived notions of masculinity. He is known the world over as a human ball of energy, frantically parading across stages while screaming his lungs out and sharing the things that keep him up at night. Carter could care less if you think telling truth about how you feel is weak, and he’s inspiring others to feel the same with the latest release from his band, Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes.

Titled End Of Suffering, Carter’s latest work is a compilation of demons being exorcised into a microphone. As the record plays, Carter rips himself open in a manner that simultaneously more poetic and blunt than anything he has delivered on previous releases. It’s the kind of album that makes you stop and question your actions, as well as the motivations behind them, and it has stuck with our staff since first being promoted through Haulix earlier this year.

On this episode of INSIDE MUSIC, host James Shotwell calls Frank Carter to discuss how he’s managed to overcome struggles and become a better person through his tireless pursuit of the perfect song. The latest record from Frank Carter And The Rattlesnake, End of Suffering, is available now wherever you experience music

Inside Music Podcast #163: Drew Holcomb Returns!

Ahead of his upcoming album, Dragons, Drew Holcomb returns to Inside Music to chat about the latest developments in his life and career.

More than three years have passed since Drew Holcomb last appeared on the Inside Music Podcast. In that time, Holcomb has released another album with his band, The Neighbors, as well as an EP with his wife, Ellie. He has also toured across the country several times over, raised his children, launched a music festival, and began curating a monthly vinyl club. To say he’s been busy would be an understatement, and today, we are going to pull back the curtain to learn how he’s handling everything happening in life.

Holcomb’s currently preparing to release a new studio album entitled Dragons. The record won’t arrive until August, but the title track is already available to stream online. Check it out:

More than any previous release, Dragons captures Drew Holcomb as a man with everything most hope to gain in this life. He’s a father, an entrepreneur, a husband, and someone who can claim to be living out their wildest dreams. He has carved a path in the music industry that no one can duplicate, and he’s done it all without falling into the trappings of the music business. Dragons captures where he is in life right now, and it does so by shining a light on the many sides of his personality.

On this episode of Inside Music, Drew Holcomb chats with host James Shotwell about the latest developments in his life. Drew tells James about the new album, as well as his Moon River music festival and all the work it entails. The pair also discuss Drew’s secret to success, which can benefit any artist willing to put themselves in a somewhat vulnerable position. Take a listen below:

Inside Music Podcast #161: Jon Beatty (Brewtally Speaking)

The co-host of Brewtally Speaking, one of music’s most exciting podcasts, stops by Inside Music to talk about talking (and other stuff).

No two careers in music are the same. That saying applies to both artists and professionals. Anyone who has any kind of presence in music got there through a series of unpredictable events that propelled them more or less in the direction they were always trying to go. Sometimes life didn’t work out the way they planned, and it’s likely they flat-out failed a time or two, but people who make a career out of music know how to persevere whatever life throws their way. Just ask Jon Beatty, the latest guest on Inside Music.

Jon Beatty is the co-founder and co-host of Brewtally Speaking, a podcast that features interviews with rock and alternative musicians. There are many podcasts with a similar setup, but few — if any — dedicate as much time to curating the perfect interview as Beatty has through his show. Jon spends a lot of his time researching his future guests, and he is constantly seeking ways to make each interaction with talent unique. The result of that hard work is over 170 episodes of genuinely interesting conversation with a who’s who of modern rock. You can find his show on iTunes, Spotify, or anywhere you get podcasts.

On this episode of Inside Music, Jon chats with host James Shotwell about his journey through the world of music journalism. He shares how an early interaction with a publication James helped build pushed him to be the person he has become. The conversation also includes discussion of journalism and interview ethics, as well as the growing importance of podcasts in music as a whole.

Inside Music Podcast #160: September Mourning

One of entertainment’s most intriguing figures appears on Inside Music to discuss her career and how others can carve a path entirely their own in a crowded marketplace.

Emily Lazar does not like to be pigeonholed. The creative force behind September Mourning, Lazar’s role in entertainment includes her band, comic books, and a wide variety of artistic expression. She has developed a world entirely her own and staked her career on making people not only pay attention to it but in making them want to be a part of it as well.

For those unaware, September Mourning is a dark art media project. It is a multi-faceted expression of Lazar’s creativity that has spawned numerous works, including a musical group that has two releases and several singles filled with melodic, yet crushing metal. Her soaring vocals perfectly pair with her band’s fiery sound, and the results are winning over crowds around the world with each appearance.

On this episode of Inside Music, host James Shotwell calls Lazar to discuss her career, her music, and where she sees the entertainment industry headed in the years to come. September Mourning will next be seen supporting Kottonmouth Kings on their summer tour, and the band will be announcing more plans for 2019 in the near future.

Inside Music Podcast #155: The Maine

John O’Callaghan, the vocalist for a band called The Maine, is appearing for the first time on a podcast called Inside Music.

The idea of community is at the heart of every great music career. Be it something cultivated by the artist(s) themselves or by their fans at large, having a sense of community can help give any career longevity. People love to feel as though they belong, and few bands in the alternative community have done a better job of making people feel welcome in the world than a group from Arizona known as The Maine.

For over a decade now, The Maine has been a band that straddled the line between pop and rock with sugary-sweet melodies and lyricism that isn’t afraid to address the darker side of life. Their seventh studio album, You Are OK (out March 29), is no exception. Every song on the record is bursting with hopefulness in spite of reality. It’s a collection of tracks that dare to acknowledge the mental abyss that drags down so many and demands we fight to resist its call. You Are OK is the album the world needs right now, and The Maine is the only group that could deliver it.

On this episode of INSIDE MUSIC, host James Shotwell calls The Maine vocalist John O’Callaghan to discuss his band’s latest album. John tells James about the creation of the record, as well as his band’s participation in the upcoming Sad Summer traveling music festival. From there, the conversation turns to longevity in the industry and how other artists can follow in the steps of The Maine.

Inside Music Podcast #153: All Them Witches

All Them Witches vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Charles Michael Parks discusses the fusion of hard rock and jazz on our latest podcast.

If there is one complaint the world of modern rock cannot escape it’s the notion that everything sounds the same. Bands may still be filling arenas with their anthems for the underdogs and working class, but can the average consumer separate one act from another? More importantly, is there any need for them to?

All Them Witches offer an alternative to the plague of repetition that has infiltrated rock over the last decade. The trio delivers an original take on hard rock that channels legendary acts such as Black Sabbath without once coming across as a watered-down version of their influences. Instead, All Them Witches strive to be original above all else, and that focus has made all the difference in the trajectory of the group’s career.

On this episode of INSIDE MUSIC, host James Shotwell sits down with Charles Michael Parks of All The Witches to discuss the intersection of hard rock and jazz. All Them Witches exist in a space where creativity is favored over perfection. Night to night, city to city, no two performances are the same. That kind of unpredictability may scare amateurs, but for All Them Witches it is the only way to live.

Inside Music Podcast #152: Of Mice & Men

Aaron Pauley and Valentino Arteaga from Of Mice & Men discuss how their band is evolving to stay relevant in a quickly changing industry on our latest podcast.

Metalcore is a fickle genre where many acts rise and fall overnight. Of Mice & Men has endured the changing trends of the industry for more than a decade, and the group show no signs of quitting anytime soon. Their latest single, “How To Survive,” speaks to this mindset in a rather tongue-in-cheek manner. Check it out:

Name something that threatens to break bands and this group has not only faced it, but emerged on the other side of the storm stronger than before. Of Mice & Men know what it’s like to take to steps forward and one step backwards. They know how losing a member or two can threaten to undo everything that has been built. More importantly, they know how to use the lessons learned from the past to inform future decision making, and that has made all the difference in the trajectory of their career.

On this episode of Inside Music, host James Shotwell sits down with Aaron Paul and Valentino Arteaga from Of Mice & Men at 20 Monroe Live in Grand Rapids, MI to talk about all things music. Aaron and Valentino discuss their group’s recent recording efforts, the legacy of their band, and how they’re evolving to embrace changing trends in the industry at large. The pair also tell us about their new single, “How To Survive,” and how it relates to everything else the band has planned for the months ahead.

Inside Music Podcast #145: Heart Attack Man (Eric Egan)

The Cleveland-based rock band’s frontman appears on Inside Music to discuss their upcoming Sophomore album.

If you read Haulix Daily on a regular basis, then you already know our love for Cleveland’s Heart Attack Man. From advice columns to videos, we’ve spent a lot of time and dedicated a lot of space to discussing the group’s unique approach to marketing and promotion. We’re doing even more of that today, but this time we’ve involved the man behind all that creative content.

On this episode of Inside Music, host James Shotwell calls Eric Egan of Heart Attack Man to discuss his unique approach to music marketing, as well as his band’s upcoming album. Heart Attack Man has a social media presence unlike any of their peers that solely relies on original ideas from Egan’s mind to drive engagement. Through creative videos and hilarious posts, Egan and his bandmates have built a community (the ‘Baby Carrot Gang‘) that is already busy promoting the band’s new album, despite the fact, almost no one has heard it. Eric tells James about the record, developing a fan base, and how he does his best to stay true to himself through all endeavors inside of music and out.

Inside Music Podcast #143: INCITE (Richie Cavalera)

The INCITE frontman and founding member opens up about his band’s forward-thinking new .

On this episode of Inside Music, host James Shotwell calls Richie Cavalera of INCITE to discuss his band’s new album, Built To Destroy. Richie details life in Vegas, his decision to leave Los Angeles, and how Incite’s latest release brings to life the vision he has had for the group since day one. James also asks Richie about the state of metal today, the differences between UK and US audiences, and where fans can expect to see Incite in the months to come.

We worked many metal bands and labels through Haulix, but something about INCITE’s latest release has stuck with us in recent weeks. Built To Destroy is a fast-paced, hard-hitting release that does not care about your opinions. As Richie Cavalera said when recording the podcast, this album finds INCITE doing precisely what they set out to do on day one. It is the culmination of a decade spent touring and recording, as well as a lifetime of experiences. INCITE want you to love it, but regardless of its performance in the marketplace the band is proud of what they have accomplished.

Built To Destroy takes a look at the world around us and demands that we consider why we live the lives we lead. Do you have a purpose, or do you merely follow orders? Do you aspire to greatness, or do you settle for the path of least resistance? INCITE recognizes how short our existence is, and they want their listeners not to let life pass by without doing whatever matters most to their heart.
