The Problem with Unpaid Internships

Internships are a great path to success in the industry, but by failing to support workers, the music business is blocking many from access based on their economic class.

There are many ways to land a career in music, but few offer the networking and learning opportunities provided by internships. A good internship can open doors and create the potential for life-changing connections that cannot otherwise be accessed by the thousands vying for a position in the entertainment industry. The problem is, most internships offer little to no compensation in exchange for work.

It’s no secret that most music industry jobs are in two of the most expensive cities on Earth, Los Angeles and New York. Nashville also has many opportunities. However, the cost of living has consistently risen year after year as more people move to the area in hopes of escaping the high prices of the coasts.

Unpaid music internships create a barrier to entry and experience for many industry hopefuls based solely on their economic class. Interns are expected to work the equivalent of full-time jobs without compensation. Many are not allowed to seek employment elsewhere because it may impact their ability to please the employer who is not paying for their services. As Sarah Kendzior wrote in The View From Flyover Country, “Work is not a labor to be done in exchange for a wage, but an act of charity to the powerful, who reward the unpaid worker with “experience” and “exposure.”

The ubiquity of unpaid internships sends a message that only those privileged enough to not worry about supporting themselves should pursue a career in music. Internships recast privilege as perseverance, suggesting that a lack of payment is somehow a test of one’s willingness to devote themselves to their craft. That view ignores the fact that, for many, working without compensation is not possible.

Some companies argue that requiring compensation for internships would lower or erase the intern opportunities they make available. While such a change would increase competition for the internships that remain, make the music industry more welcoming to people from all economic levels.

Music history has been written by people who came from nothing. The people without parents or money to fall back on are often the ones who pen the songs that take the world by storm. Being able to support oneself for months at a time without compensation is not proof that the work will be above average. At best, such abilities are proof of privilege, and that should not have a bearing on whether or not someone is good enough for a position in the music industry.

The music publication battleground has seen its share of casualties in recent years. Magazines that were once available on newsstands everywhere have ceased publication altogether, and others that were on the rise folded before reaching the mainstream. Those that continue to thrive do so because they’re always planning ahead, and few (if any) brands in music are doing that better than Kerrang!

Right now, our friends at Kerrang! are seeking an Editorial intern to join their team in New York. For information on how to apply, as well as the desired skills of applicants, read on:

-Writing breaking news articles for Kerrang.com

-Maintaining Kerrang!’s presence on social media with daily posts / promo

-Transcribing interviews

-Generating editorial ideas and contributing feature articles when possible

-Gathering assets for news and feature articles (image / video / text, etc.)

Industry Spotlight: Synner Nation

We receive a lot of questions from high school and college students regarding the potential for paid employment that does not require several years of industry experience. While it’s true that such positions are often hard to come by, our friends and clients at The Syndicate have found a way to help aspiring industry professionals get their foot in the door through their Synner Nation program, which focuses on localized marketing efforts in select areas across the US. You may have seen our post on this group and their current openings earlier this month, but today we speak with program head Sam Nakhoul to further investigate what Synner Nation is and how it’s helping young people across the US learn a bit more about life in the entertainment industry.

Haulix: Let’s start simple and recap what Synner Nation is…

Sam: Sure. Synner Nation at its core is a street marketing team. We have a 300-person team across the country, and what we do is create awareness for basically everything in the entertainment world. We work with books, artists (mainly), and even comedy. Our team is really great at spreading the word, regardless of promotion.

Haulix: So who makes up the Synner Nation team?

Sam: Kids around the country. Basically what we do is make postings on job boards and music blogs seeking to find those who want to get their foot in the door of the industry. From there, we have a whole hiring process, and the best from around the country make up our team.

Haulix: Could you give us a few examples of recent Synner Nation projects?

Sam: We just returned from San Diego Comic-Con where we were promoting two new dystopian novels. We gave away literally thousands of books to people attending the con. We also just did a big campaign for Major Lazer by posting about the record around various major markets. Its been busy.

Haulix: How’s the program work from the top down?

Sam: I’m basically the manager of the team. I’m the person who keeps everyone in check, assigns projects, and reports back to the client. The team reports to me, and I then I oversee everything to ensure its being handled appropriately. I also have a support team here, including my bosses, who help to make sure everything project goes well.

Haulix: How would you describe the average Synner Nation team member?

Sam: They’re really energetic and go-getting. They’re really enthusiastic about music and art. I don’t want to say they’re people persons because that sounds weird, but they’re willing to talk to anyone about anything exciting. That is our typical team member.

Haulix: And people actually get paid to join the program?

Sam: Yes, we are one of the few street teams that actually pays our reps and compensates them. Instead of school credit, our reps get real cash, which is especially helpful for college students who join the team. There is no set schedule or anything, so people work when they’re able and get paid for doing it.

Interested in joining Synner Nation? Here’s some additional information:

The Syndicate is an award-winning music and comedy marketing agency. Through our grassroots and digital marketing initiatives, we’ve helped to promote the careers of marquee musical and comedy acts. Intern Life: Emillie Marvel (The Intersection)

Hey there, everyone! We are always on the hunt for new ways to present the modern music industry, and in recent months we have received a number of requests to focus more of our efforts on the world of internships. So, in an attempt to appease both ourselves and our readers, we’ve decided to speak with interns from around the world about their roles in the modern music business. If you want to be featured in this series, or if you know someone we should highlight, please email james@Haulix.com and share your thoughts.

This site exists to promote the future of the entertainment industry, and to do that we need input from people like you and your entertainment-loving friends. If you have any questions about the content in this article, or if you have an artist you would like to see featured on this blog, please contact james@haulix.com. We can also be found onTwitter and Facebook.

As much as we love to encourage aspiring professionals to build a presence and do their best to establish influence online, those who really want to learn about the day-to-day grind of professional musicians would be wise to intern at their local music venue. There is nothing wrong with interning at labels, PR Groups, or even blogs, but more often than not being present in a venue on a regular basis will provide more insight on the industry than in any other role. Not only do you work with artists first hand, but you work with a variety of talent from across the industry. As a result, you also work with all types of music fans, from punk to country and back again. You see how different groups consume live music, as well as the types of merch they prefer, the way the interact with music (dancing vs moshing vs standing still), and random tidbits like who drinks the most alcohol (spoiler: country music fans usually win this title).

Working in a music venue, especially one with the ability to host bands who draw anywhere from 100-2000 people a night, provides a rare front row seat to the daily lives of music professionals. Emillie Marvel, intern at The Intersection in Grand Rapids (MI), knows this all too well. She joined the venue’s promotional team not long after recognizing her passion for the music business, and through her time there she has learned a wealth of knowledge about the modern entertainment business. She may be barely out of high school, but Emillie already has good ear for talent and a firm understanding of live music as as an industry. In time, she will no doubt be one of the most influential young people in music, but right now she’s still cutting her teeth. Today, for the first time ever, she shares her story.

H: Hey there, Emillie. How is West Michigan treating you today?

E: Aside from a mild case of frostbite, pretty well!

H: Are you a Michigan native? I guess asking where you’re from is as good a place as any to start this feature.

E: I am. I was born, and have lived most of my life, right here in the Big Rapids area.

H: I want to thank you for taking the time to speak with me. We have wanted to feature more interns on the blog, and you are someone who came highly recommended. How long have you been a part of The Intersection?

E: First off, thanks for thinking of me for the feature! I’ve been with The Intersection, in some form, since October of 2013. My internship started in April of 2014.

H: When did you initially decide to apply at The Intersection, and what was it that lead you to feel it was the place for you?

E: When I applied originally, it was for a spot on the street team. At the time, I was searching for a chance to work more with both the live show, as that’s where my passion lies, as well as the Grand Rapids music scene. I sent in my information to The Intersection. I’d heard great things about the venue’s reputation and professionalism, and within a couple weeks I was hanging flyers and passing out handouts everywhere I went. I have a bit of an “overachiever” gene, and before I knew it I was doing ten times the amount of required work each week for the venue. It didn’t go unnoticed, as I found out when I saw the internship opportunity on my now boss’s Facebook page. After commenting that I was interested, I received a message saying he’d had me in mind for the job. It was the coolest thing, to know the time and effort I was putting in was being recognized.

H: Now, we should probably cover you age, as you are still fairly young. How old were you when you first applied?

E: Barely seventeen.

H: Had you done any work in music promotion prior? Anything counts, including helping local bands or musicians you may know as friends.

E: Absolutely! I’ve been in the music industry since I was fifteen years old. In that time, I’ve been a bit of a “jack-of-all-trades”. Aside from promoting for bands through my website, I had also helped with numerous bands across the world, whether as a friend or acting manager. I still do, to this day. I love spreading the word about music I really believe in, and I’m lucky enough to have many friends who create just that!

H: What does you internship with The Intersection entail? Can you walk us through a typical week of work?

E: For The Intersection, I run The Stache’s (the four hundred capacity front room venue in the Intersection) social media accounts. This means I’m the person who puts information about the venue’s consistently growing calendar in your Twitter, Instagram and Facebook feeds. A typical day, for me, will include a quick study of the current schedule to stay on top of who’s coming to both venues, then planning a variety of posts about the upcoming shows and double—then triple—checking I have all my information down correctly. I also create graphics, follow people in the area on Twitter, watch Grand Rapids related hashtags and do quite a bit of research on ways to maximize the effectiveness of the accounts.

H: Like any smart aspiring professional, you have more than one role in the music industry. You also run a blog, Punk Nation, which I believe you also founded. Can you please tell us a little about the site’s history?

E: In April of 2012, I attended the Michigan date of the ‘Blackout Forever’ tour, and from that day I knew all I wanted was to help make live shows happen. So I came home, grabbed a notebook, and with a little push from my mom, put down a gameplan. That gameplan eventually turned into Punk Nation. Being a fearless fifteen year old who didn’t fully understand the wonderful monster that is the music industry, I started emailing anyone and everyone I could about getting interviews. Some people were less than kind, but there were far more that went above and beyond to help make my goals achievable. Before I knew it, I was heading out to shows and chatting with musicians I’d never even imagined interviewing — including one of the headliners of the show that started it all.

Punk Nation was a way for me to dive in to the music scene, and learn how things worked while making valuable connections. The website still runs today, and is in the process of a rebuild as we speak. While it’s no longer my lone focus, I do look forward to seeing where it goes from here. It’s grown more than I could have asked for in the past three years.

H: What separates your site from the numerous competitors existing in the music scene today?

E: I think the fact that I’ve never profited from it at all, yet at the same time have put more work into it than I’ve ever put into anything else. This isn’t my day job, but it’s also not simply a hobby. By balancing somewhere in between those lines, I feel like it’s free. There’s this honesty there that comes with no pressure. If I, or a member of the staff, believe in a band, we’re going to interview them, feature them on the home page, review their album and push them on our social media like you would not believe—whether they have twenty-five Facebook likes, or one million. If you come to Punk Nation, you’re going to see an act you’re familiar with. You’re also going to see an act you’ve never heard of before in your life. And both of these acts are going to put out killer tracks that you make you feel something.

H: I read somewhere that you’re also involved, or have been involved with, Idobi. What can you tell us about those efforts?

E: At idobi, I fill the roles of radio programming assistant and writer. I started with the station as an intern in December of 2013, and have since been hired on as a staff member, fulfilling my dream of my first paid job being in the music industry. I’ve learned a lot in my time at idobi, have had the chance to work on really fun projects, and have made great connections and friendships.

H: If you had to take your current roles (Intersection, Punk Nation, Idobi) and pick one to make a full time career, which would you choose and why?

E: The Intersection, without a doubt. My interest always has, and always will be, in live shows. That is what gets my heart racing and makes every ounce of work worth it. It’s the thing that makes me feel truly, 100% alive. My greatest goal is to work very closely with putting on concerts. This isn’t to mention that in my time at The Intersection, what I’ve learned is that they conduct themselves with an incredible amount of respect, keep the venue in upstanding condition and have a stellar staff that makes you feel right at home any time you walk in the doors.

H: Have you considered pursuing college or any other kind of secondary education to help boost your chances of making in the music business? Why or why not.

E: I’m currently considering it, actually. I didn’t go right out of high school, with the position my career was in it didn’t seem to make much sense at the time. Now, however, I’ve been looking into attending a business course. I feel like in order to really push my career to the next level, I’ll require a better understanding of the corporate world.

H: To date, what do you consider your biggest accomplishment as far as chasing your dream career is concerned?

E: I’d have to say interviewing Kevin Lyman, and then being approved for press credentials at Warped Tour, two accomplishments that go hand in hand. Lyman has been my greatest role model in the industry from the time I started. I admire everything he has created, and the fact that he’s kept his morals throughout it all. Speaking to him about his accomplishments and career was truly an honor – and getting a book suggestion during it was just icing on the cake! A few months later, I found myself in the press room of the Palace Of Auburn Hills, watching the production of the Vans Warped Tour tour going on all around me. I truly felt like a part of something big that day.

H: What advice would you offer other aspiring music professionals about getting their foot in the door of this wild industry?

E: Don’t stop. I live by the quote, “Great people do things before they’re ready.” When I started, people didn’t take me seriously. I had many interview pitches that were turned down, or went unanswered all together. So I’d email again a month later. There are press agencies I work with now that absolutely refused to acknowledge my existence two years ago. Persistence, professionalism, fearlessness and dedication don’t go unrecognized, and these four qualities will take you far.

H: Do you have any goals for the months ahead? If so, can you share them with us?

E: I always have a goal or two set, I’m incapable of sitting still! My next couple months will be spent diving further into the world of management, and hopefully breaking into a dream career of mine, booking.

H: Where do you see yourself in five years time?

E: Booking and helping with every step of putting on live shows. Running a management company on the side. And, perhaps, having a good running start on a record label.

H: I think that is all the time we have for now. Before I let you go, are there any final comments or observations that you would like to share with our readers?

E: Thanks for having me! This is the first time I’ve been on this side of the interview questions, and let me tell you, it was a cool (and strange) experience! Also, to anyone reading this right now, do it. Whatever you want to do, whatever goal you’re waiting to accomplish, start it. Work hard. Conquer it.

Journalism Tips #15: ‘How To Spend Your Summer Vacation’

Thank you for joining us for another installment in our our ongoing Journalism Tips series. We started this column as a way to help aspiring writers get their start in music, but over the couple months we have been evolving into a place writers come to have their questions about life in the business answered. Today we are continuing that effort with a response to a question posed by multiple reader in regards to how aspiring writers can make the most of their summer vacation. If you have any questions about developing as a writer/blogger in music, please do not hesitate email james@haulix.com and share your thoughts. We can also be found on Twitter and Facebook.

Many of our readers are wrapping up another year of school this month or next, and if they’re fortunate enough to not absolutely have to find work right away their are several weeks of childlike freedom ahead. It’s an exciting time to be young, and for the young it’s an important time to be thinking about the future. Advertisers will tell you to embrace the now or otherwise live in the present, but if you want to make a career for yourself in the music business you should see the arrival of summer vacation as a door to opportunity that only needs your drive and passion to be kicked wide open. I cannot tell you exactly what you need to do in order to make yourself noticed by the industry at large, but by following the follows tips you will position yourself for success down the line. Making the most of that positioning and networking with the people you meet through those efforts is entirely up to you.

Make a list of achievable goals and set dates for each task to be accomplished.

There is no real limit to what you can accomplish this summer, but if you do not have an idea of what you are trying to achieve from the start you are bound to spend days, if not weeks spinning your wheels with indecision. If you want to be a writer, this means setting goals for the amount of content created, as well as the dates that you plan to have certain festival/tour coverage complete. For example, those who plan to attend Vans Warped Tour on July 1 could set a goal to have all interviews and related live coverage published within 10 days of the event.

Find an internship.

The is no overstating the profound impact a great internship can have on your career trajectory. These internships does not have to be directly related to journalism, but it should be in an area of the music industry that interests you. After all, there is always a chance you will not ultimately become a music writer. Internships offer you an opportunity to explore other areas of music, such as publicity and digital marketing, where many of the skills used for writing can be leveraged. This not only gives you more options for your post education career, but it also provides you with a more well rounded understanding of how the industry functions.

Use Festival Coverage To Refine Your Voice

Summer music writing is synonymous with festival coverage, and in 2014 it’s hard to go more than 3 or 4 days without a major music event kicking off somewhere across the continental United States. Many of these festivals feature similar lineups, which will no doubt result in redundant coverage from blogs and magazines who were granted press badges just so they could spend their mornings summarizing the same set lists and performances delivered by at every festival that came before through a handful of hit-or-miss pictures and interviews. We will probably never reach a point where this type of coverage is not commonplace, but that does not mean that it’s the type of content you have to create in order to make an impact at these events. In fact, the content that typically gets the most attention are the articles that find a way to be unique in a sea of commonality. Summarize set lists and complete interviews if you must, but take the time to soak in the festival environment and convey it to your readers through editorial efforts. Write about what you saw, felt, smelled, tasted, touched, thought, and experienced. Tell them what it was like for you specifically, and don’t be afraid to tell the truth. If the festival was crowded or the sound was terrible go ahead and let the world know. Likewise, if something surprises you in a good way, even small things, highlight them as well. Every event has pros and cons. Don’t gloss over the experience.

Challenge yourself to write about something different

Writers, like musicians, have a bad habit of getting overly comfortable with material that works and hesitating whenever the idea of trying something new is presented. While there may always be a place in this world for someone who is the most well versed individual on one particular topic, the growing trend in entertainment writing is sites and magazines recruiting people who are well versed on a variety of topics. If you’re into music, that means being able to write about an up and coming country act with the same sincerity and intelligent voice as you would the next big pop punk outfit. It could also mean doing video interviews and writing album reviews, or otherwise switching the type of media you are creating while still speaking in an intelligent and welcoming voice. This summer, challenge yourself to step outside your professional comfort zone and surround yourself with material that will make you actually work. Find events and/or albums that require research, thought, and time to properly analyze, then go out and create that content. Buy a camera and take photos at every event you write a live review for instead of bringing along a photographer. Start a podcast. Interview a rapper. Whatever it is you have always thought you would never do, now is the time to toss care to the wind and give the unknown an honest attempt. You never know what you might learn about yourself.

Network. Network. Network.

No matter where you go or what you choose to write about this summer, you need to make it a point to introduce yourself to everyone you can and be as nice as humanly possible. You should also work on printing business cards as soon as possible, even if you have no real business to promote. You’re promoting yourself at these events, even if you feel like you’re only there to see a show. You’re not. In reality, especially at festivals, you’re representing your personal brand to every concert attendee, artist, manager, and industry professional who happens to be on site. Holding doors and buying drinks for the right people may open more doors than any well written article, and all it takes is putting others before yourself. Ask people who they are and what they do, but also do not be afraid to share your current activities and goals. Tell them what you are working towards and who knows? They may be able to help.

Build an online portfolio and remember to keep it updated

The internet has made it incredibly simple for people with an interest in writing to begin sharing their content with the world without spending anything at all beyond the basic cost of internet (which might not be a factor in places with free public wifi). Writers love free platforms and free promotion, but if you want to properly represent yourself online it’s worth finding $100 to spend on a custom domain and site hosting fees. Companies like Squarespace and Wix make it incredibly easy to build high quality websites in no time at all, and if you know the right phrases to Google you can often find offer codes to make those reasonably priced services even more affordable. There is a myth amongst writers in the digital age that if they take time off from creating content they will slip into the realm of forgotten people simply because the demand for new material is so high, but it is incredibly important that writers set aside time to carve out their own, professionally-focused corner of the internet. You need a place where people who are interested in working with you can find links to your work, as well as a resume, bio, contact information, and whatever else you feel obliged to share about yourself with the world. If you want an example, click here to see the portfolio of yours truly (Haulix James).

Whatever this summer, remember this: No one notices the aspiring professional who keeps to themselves and does the same thing every day. The people who makes big moves in this industry find the strength and courage within to make a change long before anyone else ever takes notice. Make this summer the time when you take life by the reigns and begin to truly leave your mark on this industry. The world is yours.
