PRO TIP: Fake album announcements are risky business

Last weekend was a wild one. Between the leaked Trump tapes and the second presidential debate it was hard for anything unrelated to politics to grab headlines, even in smaller markets. The one exception to this may have been Nicki Minaj, who surprised fans around the globe with the announcement she would be releasing her long-awaited third studio album at Midnight on Saturday, October 8. The rap star turned pop phenom told her Twitter followers the record would be titled Pick My Fruit and that every song was named after a fruit she loved. The tweets still exist, so here they are as evidence:

Considering the fact Minaj last released an album in 2014, fans were understandably excited to learn their favorite rapper would soon be gracing them with new music. Word of Nicki’s plans for the record spread like wildfire, with blogs and publications of all sizes posting the news before the above track list was even posted online. Everyone thought the next day would be filled with hot takes regarding the new record, but as midnight came and went in various places around the planet people slowly realized they were being played:

Minaj never made an official statement regarding her late night social media prank, but much has been written in the days since the incident questioning whether or not the troll was the best idea as it relates to business. 2016 has seen a surge in ‘surprise’ releases announced at the very last minute, and considering that Minaj has only released one song since her last album (the “Pinkprint Freestyle” dropped on September 4) the idea she might release an album out of the blue made a lot of sense.

Everyone enjoys a good joke, but lying to your incredibly patient fans about the existence of a new record in an age where everyone is champing at the bit for new content pretty much 24/7 is an incredibly risky move. While it would appear that many of Minaj’s fans found some humor in the troll there was also quite a bit of disappointment as well. Everyone has the ability to be patient, especially when it comes to waiting on a new creation from an artist they believe in, but everyone also has their limits.

If I had to guess I would say Minaj will more than likely release something, be it an album or just another single, in the coming weeks. Her fans may be trying to laugh off the Fruit incident in hopes something substantial is coming soon, but if nothing surfaces I am certain some will begin to look for other artists to support. Minaj may not be your favorite artist, but her words have impacted the lives of millions, and there are many looking to her for support or entertainment with bated breathe. Their excitement should be cherished, supported, and leveraged to urge others to feel the same, but in instances like this it is challenged. Instead of feeling like their adoration inspires their favorite artists they’re told it’s something to be used for amusement/humor. That’s not a good look for anyone, regardless of their popularity at Top 40 radio.

All this said, I am not expecting Nicki Minaj to fall out of the public eye anytime soon. Her career has propelled her far enough into the cultural conversation that one or two PR misfires are only going to have a minimal impact on her fanbase as a whole. The same cannot be said for other, smaller artist who may think teasing new material is a good idea. Those on the come up need to recognize that honesty and integrity go a long way towards securing lifelong fans, and pranks like the one being pulled with Pick My Fruit can potentially do far more harm than good.

Don’t be like Nicki Minaj. Maintain an open dialogue with fans through honesty and they will follow you anywhere. Leverage their faith in you for your own amusement and they will find someone else to support.

Journalism 101: Coverage Confirmations

If the first goal of every young music writer is to gain access to albums from their favorite artists before those records arrive in stores, then the second goal is usually to see those artists in concert without paying the cover charge. Yes, free admission to concerts and festivals is one of the perks of writing about music, but just like advance access to music it’s a perk that doesn’t necessarily have to be extended to you.

No show or event is truly free to writers. Your currency in these exchanges is your voice and whatever audience (aka reach) you have through the outlet that shares your work. Upon receiving confirmation that you have been added to the list of any event you are entering into an agreement that you both will attend said event and that you will write about that event in a timely manner. For example, if you attend Van’s Warped Tour on Monday after promising a review to PR then it should not take a week or more to post that review online. If it does you will risk straining your relationship with the PR that granted you access in the first place. More importantly, you will develop a reputation that extends beyond that one relationship and follows you where you go in music. The industry may seem large to outsiders, but it’s actually quite small, and everyone who knows anyone will come to learn of your lack of follow through.

This is about good business as much as it is respect. People will get upset if publicists do not reply to their requests in a timely manner, but see no problem dragging their feet to complete content that was promised in advance of receiving a coverage confirmation. Those who respect others and their time/work will in turn receive the same respect.

Rey Roldan, founder of Reybee Inc., recently wrote the following on coverage requests and confirmations from the perspective of a publicist:

If you request music or tickets from a publicist and promise or confirm coverage, it’s your duty to make good on it… and if, for some reason or another, you can’t keep your side of the deal, it’s only respectful to let the publicist know. Don’t ghost them.

It’s understandable if you hated the show or the music and you don’t want to cover it because of that reason. But let the publicist know, so they don’t constantly hound you for the link.

If you confirm an interview date and time but something comes up and you can’t make it, let the publicist know ASAP. Don’t wait for the time of your interview to tell them that it’s a no-go. It only makes the publicist look bad and could create tension in your relationship moving forward.

If you get confirmation of guest list or photopasses to a show (especially the bigger, higher profile shows) and can’t make it, let the publicist know as soon as your can. There’s a chance that the publicist can use your spot to give to another writer/photographer who was cut from the list. We publicists do sometimes check guest lists after the show to see who showed up and who didn’t.

If you are requesting tickets to a show with multiple artists, either send one email with all the publicists on copy or make sure if you get confirmed on one list to let the other publicists know you’re all set. If you are on multiple lists for the same show, it can prevent other writers/photographers from covering that show. Or if we publicists cross-check our lists and see you on it more than once (or worse yet, see multiple names for the same outlet on different lists), it looks bad for you and/or your outlet.

Making relationships in this industry can be difficult. Maintaining them is easy. Just don’t fuck them up.

Respect and follow-through are everything in this business. Do your best to follow the golden rule (treat others as you want to be treated) and you’ll do just fine.

Facebook changed its feed formula again, and it’s only getting worse for musicians

Just when you thought you could maybe sometimes consider relying on Facebook’s complicated feed algorithm to possibly show your posts to 5% of your total fan base (if that), the company built by Mark Zuckerberg has once again announced changes to its feed formula that appears to make it harder than ever for musicians and those who promote music to reach their audience.

Earlier this week, Facebook made changes to how it ranks the content that appears in users news feeds. The big upgrade is an improved focus on content from “the friends you care about,” such as photos, videos, status updates or links. These posts will now appear higher in your feed, which means other posts – mainly those from Pages you like, such as bands and brands – will be given even less attention/exposure than before.

Here’s how Facebook explained the change and its impact on the reach of various Pages:

“…we anticipate that this update may cause reach and referral traffic to declinefor some Pages. The specific impact on your Page’s distribution and other metrics may vary depending on the composition of your audience. For example, if a lot of your referral traffic is the result of people sharing your content and their friends liking and commenting on it, there will be less of an impact than if the majority of your traffic comes directly through Page posts. We encourage Pages to post things that their audience are likely to share with their friends. ”

Now what am I supposed to do?

The hard truth of the matter is that Facebook is a massive online community that all brands and bands need to be a part of despite how difficult the company makes it for your content to be found by those who have selected to receive your news and updates. The best thing you can do to help increase reach is to try and create quality content that fans will want to share. This means videos, important news (tour dates/album releases) shared with eye-catching imagery, etc. Post the highest quality content you are able to create and ask your fans to share it if it somehow makes their day a bit better.

You’ve Signed The Contract, Now What?! – 5 Things to Remember During Your PR Campaign

The following is the latest post in an ongoing collaboration with the team at Catalyst Publicity Group. If you have a question related to Music PR that you would like us to tackle in an upcoming column, email james@haulix.com and we’ll do our best to give you a timely response.

QUESTION: My band recently signed a contract with a publicist. What should we be doing to ensure we get the most out of our money (and their time)?

Good question. There are five things you need to remember when starting a new PR campaign…

1. Return press to publicist in a timely fashion

Many artists don’t understand how swiftly press moves. Social media mentions, blog posts, and online features go as fast as they come in. In order to keep your campaign moving fluidly, you need to be turning over press quickly and in a timely manner. This means it is within your best interest to return all written interviews and schedule all phoners as soon as possible – within a few days (if not within 24 hours!). If you have a lot – get it to your publicist anyway or provide them with an update. He or she can coordinate posting with the editors to ensure not too many features run the same day, or reschedule the feature according to their editorial calendar. Editorial calendars fill up, journalists work against tight deadlines, and writers lose interest fast. You don’t want to keep press waiting, and you don’t want to burn bridges with the people who are going to define your image. This is what a publicist is working against. It’s important to make sure that press is taken care of first and foremost, and that you communicate with your publicist every day.

2. Professionalism during interviews

Yes, you are in a band. Yes, being in a band is fun. We get it. You are allowed to have fun and be yourself, but don’t be disrespectful or unprofessional. That’s when you just look silly or immature, and the media will not want to waste their time talking with an artist who doesn’t know how to show them respect. Not to mention, the writers have every right to tell the world about your sloppy demeanor, overuse of swearing, or inappropriate gestures while you were talking to them.

Be sure to show up to an interview on time or call-in to phoners on-time (and on-time does not mean 5 minutes late! Sometimes phoners are radio interviews and you only have a short time between commercial breaks to get your story across!). Dress as you would for a show, acknowledge the interviewer, thank them. Don’t show up to an interview drunk or on drugs, and most importantly, always keep your hands to yourself (and keep it in your pants! – this isn’t Rock of Ages).

3. Produce content while on the road

As mentioned before press moves fast, and people lose interest fast. Just because you are on the road doesn’t mean your job with the media is over. Continue to produce interesting, unique content while you are on the road to keep yourself buzzing and keep your fans hooked. Tour diaries, studio updates, behind-the-scenes and beyond-the-stage videos, cover songs, remixes, etc. The list goes on. Produce enough content to keep your publicist busy while you’re out playing shows. It’s okay, we like that!

4. Continue being creative and offer story angles to publicist throughout campaign

This one we couldn’t stress more. The one thing that makes you stand out against other artist is – SURPRISE! – not your music. It’s your personality, your background, and your story. Contrary to popular belief, this is not something your publicist will “make up” for you. No one can tell you who you are but YOU. Are you a war veteran? Do you support LGBT rights? Are you speaking at a domestic violence event in a few weeks? How did you get your start in music (and please don’t say my dad bought me a guitar when I was 5 – everyone says that – see where we’re going here? Be original).

What groundbreaking and unique stories can you share that will tell the press who YOU are? What makes you stand out beyond your music?

5. Trust your Publicist! And be respectful…

Leave it up to your publicist to handle PR matters and more. You hired your publicist for their professionalism and expertise, and they will never work against your best interest. Your publicist should be considered one of your best friends, your most trusted teammates – after all, they are the ones who will highlight your best assets, cheerlead you on, and even clean up your messes. If you have an emergency that requires a public statement or other remedy, notify your publicist before anyone else – even your best friend. They will advise you on how to move forward with the best intentions.

Also:

Your publicist is your cheerleader always looking out for your best interests. Don’t forget to show them respect. Be kind and remember to thank them for their time and hard work. If you have a non-emergency late at night or on the weekend (i.e. you want their opinion on your new song or video), email them. Don’t hit them up on their personal social media pages or blow up their cell phones to review your content, brainstorm, or any other work after hours. Your publicist has a life too (and even though he/she is probably working anyway, after hours is our “quiet time” to get extra work done – email us and we will get back when we can). Be courteous, and trust that we will get the job done as swiftly and painlessly as possible.
