Choosing to live (and think) differently

Some of you may have noticed a lot of changes taking place at Haulix over the past seven months. Since the beginning of 2017 our team has carefully combed through every page of our platform, both public and private, in hopes of finding ways to improve our system without seeking outside help. Haulix was the brainchild of one person, and since launch we have taken great pride in the fact we’ve developed (almost) everything on our own. What users see is what we saw long before coding began, and there is something really special about that.

We tried to change everything all at once in 2016 and literally broke out website. As an online company, this means we literally broke our business. It was the first time we ever tried such a change, and instead of approaching our goals at a reasonable pace we tried to do everything all at once. It was a disastrous decision.

This year, we used a similar approach to development as we did with our research. We are going through every page, one at a time, making updates big and small as we find them. Instead of rolling everything out all at once we are rolling updates out as they are completed. We started with our homepage, arguably the easiest of them all, and we have built from there.

The same approach we took to development can easily be applied to any area of life. Your next big life change begins with a single decision to change. It’s not about doing everything all at once, but committing to life tomorrow differently than you did today.

Let’s use a universal example:

If you want to get into the habit of jogging you cannot expect to complete a three mile course on your first day out. It would be great if you could, but it’s not likely. No one says you have to run any further than you can right now if you’re just starting out, yet as humans we tend to set goals for ourselves that do not always align with reality. When we try to do something for the first time and our expectations for ourselves are not met we tend to not try again because we tell ourselves we’re not good enough.

Of course you’re not good. You haven’t done this thing before, so why would you be proficient at it?

Your only expectations going into anything new is to do your best, whatever that may be, and to be happy with that. As long as you’re working on your skills you are finding success, in some small way, any time you do work.

Don’t push yourself too hard. You can – and will – break.

Choose to live differently and stick to it. That is enough.

One successful musician explains what it takes to ‘make it’ today

Everyone working in music believes they know a thing or two about what it takes for someone or some group to ‘make it’ in music today, including the people behind this blog. We believe – just like everyone else – that our advice will help you get new fans, engage with those already following, and build a career worthy of your talent.

You know what most of those people, including those working on this blog, have not done? Lead a successful career as a musician.

Brian Burkheiser is another story altogether. One-part of popular alternative rock group I Prevail, Burkheiser recently took to Facebook to shed some light on how he and his bandmates found success in this crazy industry on their own terms. We hung on every word and believe you will (should) too. Enjoy:

So a lot of people always ask me how I Prevail grew so quickly. Here’s my response.

If you want your band to grow and get big, you need to be involved in every aspect of your business and constantly be looking to improve your craft.

Songwriting, performing, social media, marketing, merch, finances, etc. If it’s your baby and you really have a vision, you need to be 100% involved in everything your band is doing. There are a lot of distractions in this music scene and it’s very easy to lose sight of what your initial dreams were when you started your project if you get to caught up in all the outside commotion.

A lot of people will sneak their way in as you grow and get bigger. They’ll tell you what you want to hear in the moment, but then ultimately try to get you to follow their vision instead of yours. Don’t be bullied, if you feel strongly about something, fight for it. The biggest lesson I’ve learned in the industry is that if you don’t fight for your way, you’ll get walked all over. Industry people who are used to pushing artist around will do so if you don’t stop them. Your job is to speak up if you’re not in agreement with something.

At the end of the day, it’s your band. Sure, there are a lot of amazing people you will work with that will help grow your career. But it’s your job to separate the good guys from the bullshiters. Don’t let anyone gain too much control of your business if you don’t feel absolutely confident in them. All it takes is a couple bad moves to bring your band down in an instant.

If you want to continue to grow, never lose your work ethic and continue to grind. There will be a lot of days when you think, “is this worth it anymore?” Well, just know if you can get past those thoughts and keep fighting, you WILL succeed in this industry. Quite a bit I feel mentally and physically fried, especially when I’m out on a long tour. Touring can be a grind, especially when your trying to run a buisness at the same time. That’s where your drive will really get put to the test. How much time are you willing to dedicate to your band?

I’m not saying you can’t have fun and enjoy yourself a lot while on the road, it’s just about finding the right balance. If you are too caught up in the party lifestyle you’ll forget what got you here, but at the same time if you never give yourself a break from the business side and being a perfectionist, you’ll drive yourself mad. It will take some time, but eventually you’ll find the right balance for you.

Now the most important thing about this whole post. Your fans. Always treat your fans right. They made you. They’re giving you a chance to live your dream. Do right by them, and they will always do right by you. I’ve had so many incredible interactions with so many people the past few years and it’s absolutely what keeps me going. I get emotional thinking about how many stories I’ve been told, and how happy it makes me that someone can relate with the same stories that I’ve relayed through my music. Even on your darkest days, just know that your fans will always be by your side. Always be thankful for that.

So yeah, I know that was a novel. I just wanted to get out some advice I feel like I would have loved to have been given when starting my band.

I Prevail can be found on Vans Warped Tour all summer long. You can get a taste for their music below:

Introducing our new ‘My Promos’ screen

If you’re a member of the media who has logged onto Haulix today you may have noticed a few major changes to our platform. On Saturday afternoon our team rolled out a completely overhauled version of our MyPromos and Profile screens. These updates changed the look and feel of these pages, as well as the overall speed of our platform. Here’s a quick breakdown of everything new:

1. All your promos are now organized by sender. Click on any sender from the left column and the promos available to you from them will appear on the screen.

2. If the sender has organized their promos by a specific label/genre/etc. that categorization will appear to you as well.

3. If you hide any promo(s) those records will be sorted into a new ‘Hidden Promos’ category that will appear on the left side of the page. It looks like this:

In the weeks and months ahead we will be adding additional functionality to this page, including the ability to view all the albums you’ve sent that are scheduled to be released within the next month.

If you have any questions about this update, or if you have a suggestion for a future Haulix change, please email help@haulix.com and our team will respond as soon as we are able.

James and Stephen could not help addressing the events of the day, with Stephen briefly reflecting on the time he spent touring alongside the deceased frontman just a few short years ago. If you or anyone you know is suffering from depression, please – seek help.

The song you hear in this episode is “Gloria,” the lead single off Stephen’s upcoming album. You can find the full song on YouTube, Spotify, or anywhere else you legally stream music.

Tear it down. Start again.

Not long ago, my life fell apart. In a matter of weeks I found myself with no relationship, no office, no apartment, and no real plan of what I was going to do next. I moved back in with my parents, who were thrilled to see their son for more than two days in a row for the first time in years, and setup a desk in the back of their living room. I’m sitting in that same place now as I write this post.

I could not have anticipated most of the changes that came my way, and I certainly could not have guessed how many would seemingly happen all at once. Depression came knocking, but I refused to answer the door. It never has anything productive to offer anyways.

Deep down I knew if there were a way to keep my life and career in tact it would have to come from within, even if I did not know where to find it.

To focus, I stopped…..

-Talking to people who didn’t help me create value.

-Opening Facebook/Twitter.

-Paying attention to politics 24/7.

-Watching T.V. and Netflix.

-Going out to eat.

-Making excuses to spend money just so I had something to do

-Writing about things I knew I did not care about

The first few days were the hardest. Instead of thinking about my situation or the work in front of me I wanted to check in with the rest of the world. The news makes things seem so terrible right now, and to some extent they legitimately are, but I found a sense of escape in occupying my time with the woes of the planet. I escaped further by engaging in conversations about these things, all of which would inevitably amount to nothing more than me agreeing with people who agree with me on things we’ve likely always agreed on. I wasn’t helping them or the planet, and I certainly wasn’t helping myself.

Then I heard a song. I would share it now, but the truth is that the particular track doesn’t matter nearly as much as the spark it ignited within me. I couldn’t shake the song. I couldn’t shake the band. I wanted to know everything about the music and I wanted to tell people everything I was able to learn. Passion had found me while I was busy trying to run from it and here I was, back where I always wanted to be.

When I wrote about that song I felt the freedom that only comes from doing the thing you love for no reason other than your love of doing it. That is what really matters, after all. Money, fame, popularity, even jobs will eventually disappear. The only real reason anyone has to pursue something is because it makes them feel alive. It gives them purpose.

As this realization sat in I began to evaluate how I came to such a conclusion. I thought about my fight with myself to avoid work and the mounting personal problems that needed addressing, as well as why I fought so hard to ignore them. That inner monologue then turned into a post about that subject, which gave way to another, and another, and now to this post.

I had made a classic mistake that many of us encounter when things go awry in our lives: I lost focus of what made me feel alive. Instead of running from that fact I chose to write about it, which in turn helped me find my way back to the thing that first ignited my passion for music and writing in the first place. All the chaos that had kept me up at night stressing over what the future might hold had transformed – through no one’s doing other than my own – into material that would serve as the path I followed back to finding my center in life once more.

There is a great country song that features the hook, “If you’re going through hell, keep on goin’”. That may sound simple to many of you reading this now, but in reality it is not. Keeping on, or in other words moving forward when life gets tough is one of the hardest things we as people must learn to do. If we fail to do so life has a way of consuming us and making us feel small, insignificant, and even stupid, but believe me when I tell you that is not the case with you or I. We are better than that. YOU are better than that. Believe in yourself and stay true to what you know. The rest will still need to be sorted, but as long as you maintain personal your course in life things will inevitably work out. Choose to move forward and wake up every day with the goal of doing just that. After all, what is the alternative?

Haters are only as powerful as you allow them to be

In a time where everyone who wants to communicate with the world at large can do so without needing to give a name or photo that accurately depicts who they really are, life can be strange. Just this morning a friend notified me of a message they received from a since deleted anonymous Facebook account urging them to consider a career change. Other friends have shown me similar screenshots from Twitter, Instagram, and similar platforms with similar interactions. Some of these engagements contain word usage that is downright mean, while others are filled with lies so cleverly pieced together the individual receiving them begins to question themselves.

The same thing happens to me. Just last week I received an email from an anonymous account insulting me for a review I wrote in the summer of 2013. I’ve also received countless messages telling me to kill myself or quit my career. They have become commonplace, or at least as commonplace as anonymous hate and rage can be, but I would be lying if I said it ever gets easier to see.

In fact, it is increasingly hard for me to not reply to these anonymous people and enter into what I know to be an argument I cannot win. I want so very badly to tell them that they are wrong about me, my work, my friends, and whatever else they choose to sling hate upon. If I could find their true identities I imagine my response would be very similar to that of Jay and Silent Bob at the end of Kevin Smith’s classic comedy Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back. If you’ve never seen the film in question, watch the clip below to see what I mean:

Wouldn’t that feel great? To confront the anonymous commenters of the internet and give them a taste of their medicine? The sweet relief that one might feel from unleashing a firestorm of rage upon someone who has made them feel small would probably incredibly refreshing.

But then again, maybe not.

The older I get the more I realize how closed off we become with age. Children are often able to welcome any new person with open arms and minds, as if everyone they encounter might be their next best friend. Adults don’t do that. We’ve all been through our fair share of ups and downs, which have inevitably given us a view of people that is vastly different from the perspective we had in our youth. This is often for better and worse, as it makes us cautious in a way we never thought we would be. The internet, or rather the ability to remain anonymous online, only makes this worse because we often rack our brains trying to understand who could possibly be so mean to us. Even if we don’t actually know the person we often cannot shake the idea it might be our friend, or lover, or neighbor, or maybe even a parent. As the hate continues, paranoia starts to mount, and the cycle of worry and fear continues in perpetuity until we snap or stop what we’re doing altogether.

I have had more than my fair share of blowouts with anonymous internet personalities and in my experience nothing beneficial ever comes from such efforts. You exhaust yourself defending something you don’t feel should need defending while the person the other end does nothing. If they do respond, which is not entirely unusual, it is to double down on what they have told you before. They don’t like you or something you do for reasons that only make sense to them. Maybe they like you too much, which again is something that happens without proper explanation or rationale. This is because their behavior is not rational, and nothing you – a rational person – can say will change that fact.

So you want to work in the music business…

Here’s something you don’t want to read: Your dreams might not come true. In fact, it has famously been said that many live lives of quiet desperation, longing to be the things they never got the chance to be. I have tried and tried to understand why things don’t always work out, but the reasons many fall short of their goals are as varied as the people themselves. There is no one way to find success, just like there is no one way to fail.

If everyone got their way all the time the music industry would look nothing like it does today, and I mean that both for better and worse. Those who find success are able to shape the industry for future generations. Those who do not are left to attend shows, stream music, and remain lifelong fans. What separates those two groups is often their willingness to fight, and make no mistake – if you want a career in this industry you will have to fight for it.

People often ask me what it takes to make it. I often respond by saying it’s as simple and as difficult as being yourself. You never know for sure how others will react, but you have to believe in yourself before you can expect anyone else to do the same. After the person talking to me replies that such a vague response does not offer much help, I follow-up my thoughts with these words:

Everyone is fighting this battle in their own way.

Everyone hoping to do anything in this business wakes up with the prospects of going to war. It doesn’t matter whether it should or shouldn’t be like this because the fact of the matter is it is the way things are at this point in time. The boom of access through technology and the internet happened much faster than the music industry was able to adapt. Even if the industry were able to see the changes the internet would present in advance and had ample time to prepare it’s hard to imagine a world where there are anywhere near enough reliable full-time jobs in the creative area you want to work in to allow everyone a place of there own guaranteed. That’s not how life works and it’s not how music works.

The best you can do is to wake up every day and put action to your dreams. Start today. If you want to write the next song that is going to change the world, it’s probably time to take mastering your instrument and songwriting seriously. If you want to manage the next big band, find a band you give a damn about and do whatever it takes to make sure me and everyone else feels the same way this time next year. If you want to pitch Rolling Stone, Alternative Press, XXL, or anyone else, learn how to form a good pitch and start sending emails. If you want to be a publicist, find an artist you believe in and make the rest of us feel the same through any means necessary. I could go on and on, but I think you get the point.

You’re going to fail, but there’s another upside: Everyone Fails.

Everyone fails a lot, in fact. More bad songs are written every day than future classics, just like more bad press releases are sent than those that make people who receive hundreds of press releases a week actually read what they wrote. It’s not about a single try and it’s not about a single day, week, or month. Building a career of any kind in any field in the music business is an ongoing series of trial and error where you and everyone you know hopes to succeed in some way more often than not. We take our chances and we take our bruises. We complain about the way corporations have devalued music while making billions of the art that musicians create while hoping streaming payouts really do lead to the bright future we were told would come. We claim we found the next best band in the world when we really just heard a good song on the internet. We put our faith in people that turn out to be nothing like we expected and we in turn sometimes surprise ourselves.

Some failures hurt more than others, but that’s okay. You learn to take the good with the bad because you remember that hope only gets you as far as you’re willing to fight in this business and that everyone else has ups and downs too.

Be honest with yourself and others. You cannot do everything. In fact, some things you probably shouldn’t do, and that’s perfectly okay.

To attempt anything is to accept the fact you may fail. Everyone fails, as we mentioned above, but if you find yourself failing again and again without ever finding a sliver of success you may need to take a hard look at your goal and ask yourself whether or not they can be achieved. The hard truth of the matter is that only a very small amount of those who dream and strive to work in music every actually make a career for themselves in this business. If you are not one of them it does not mean you are a failure. You rose above being a failure the moment you decided to try and chase your dreams. You wouldn’t believe how many people never even take the first step towards getting what they want. If things are not working out after a long enough period of time you need to consider the possibility that there may be other fields and areas of expertise where your particular set of skills could be of value. The world needs motivated souls, and you are one. Find a way to make existence a bit better for others and do that thing. Music will always be here, and you will always have it in your life, even if it isn’t what pays the bills.

You are never alone, though it’s going to feel like that sometimes.

When you’re working with others in any capacity you begin to realize your individual performance really does influence their ability to pay their student loans and cover their share of rent in the apartments they more than likely share with anywhere from one to six, seven, or even eight people depending on the metropolis they were forced to move to in order to take their time in this business ‘seriously.’ (You don’t have to do that, by the way. Be the biggest thing you come out of your spot on the map, and don’t forget to thank the internet – and this author – for your success down the line.) You, like them, were once just a kid who really loved a particular band or sound and that somehow turned into a career where you’re now responsible for doing something (or more than likely, many things) in exchange for money. Compared to the way most people approach finding a career in something, that’s crazy! We’re all a little crazy and we many of us deal with the same stresses and bouts of self doubt that you may experience from time to time. We’re strongest when we work together, and that means being open and honest with one another. Recognize that we are all crazy fans deep down inside and we all know of the power music has to impact lives. We are all working toward the same thing, and that is to lift up the art that gives us the ability to wake up every day and fight.

There is power in numbers. Work together.

As much as my individual drive and talent has helped me make a way in this industry, all my greatest accomplishments were the direct result of projects I worked on with people I believed in. Surround yourself with like-minded people who fight for the things they want and understand that real work that lies ahead. This may be the friends you know now or it may be a group of strangers you meet only after you take it upon yourself to start chasing whatever it is you want to do. The bonds you form with these people will last a lifetime, and they will come to mean more than any paycheck possibly could.

Commit.

There is no denying that finding a career in music is often driven by networking, but even the best connections still require commitment. Music is considered one of the easiest industries to get your foot in, but no one ever stops to tell you everyone and their brother currently has a foot in the door of this business. It takes nothing to do the bare necessities required to claim to have a presence in music and that is a beautiful thing. It’s also a litmus test of sorts to separate the truly driven from those who will eventually turn to a more reliable and suitable (and arguably sane) career. If you want to do anything you have to make yourself known, and it’s both as easy and as hard as committing to working towards your goals every single day. To borrow from Nike, “just do it,” and soon things will begin to fall into place.
