Happy Holidays from Haulix!

It’s that time of year again. Regardless of your beliefs or chosen celebrations, December has a way of bringing people together. It is when we reconnect with the most essential thing in life, those we love and the people who love us, all while (hopefully) shutting out the chaotic world around us. It is when we catch our breath, rest, and prepare for the next twelve months ahead.

We wanted to take a moment before heading out to thank each and every one of you for continuing to support our company. Haulix was launched with the goal of creating a secure, cost-effective way for artists and their representatives to discreetly share music. We take pride in achieving that goal, but we celebrate the fact we’ve become something much more over time. We’ve helped artists find management, get record deals, and create albums that changed the way people think. We’ve also engaged with several generations of music professionals and aspiring minds alike, all of whom have helped us better understand this ever-changing business.

Moving forward, our goals remain the same. We want to create the best software possible. We also want to help educate and develop the next wave of music professionals so that they might make this business their own.

None of this is possible without your support and friendship. So again, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you. We cannot wait to continue working together in the new year.

Music piracy more popular than ever, according to new report

Music piracy in 2017 rose 14.7 percent over that of 2016, with 73.9 billion visits to music piracy sites worldwide, according to piracy data insight tracker MUSO’s 2017 Global Piracy Report. The annual report measures piracy from over 30,000 of the highest traffic sites for all formats – including web streaming, download and torrenting.

The report also found there were 300.2 billion visits to piracy sites last year, up 1.6 percent from 2016 when accounting for each sector, and the United States is the leading perpetrator.

Billboard highlights the facts that the music category’s 73.9 billion visits, MUSO’s data separates sites into five different distinctions: web streaming sites (30.5 billion); web download sites (21.2 billion); streaming ripping sites (15.7 billion); public torrent sites (6 billion) and private torrent sites (500 million). Notably, music piracy is heavily skewed toward mobile users: 87.13 percent of those visits overall were accessed via mobile, compared to just 52 percent for TV piracy.

“There is a belief that the rise in popularity of on-demand services such as Netflix and Spotify have solved piracy, but that theory simply doesn’t stack up,“ MUSO co-founder/CEO Andy Chatterly said in a statement accompanying the report. “Our data suggests that piracy is more popular than ever.”

The findings of the MUSO report support other reports on piracy in recent years. If you recall, a report posted on this blog a little under two years ago cited the piracy in 2015 as being the worse of all-time. That report respected the total rate of piracy to double by 2020 and – at least based on this report from MUSO – that appears to be what will happen.

Introducing the new ‘My Promo’ and ‘My Profile’ screens

We just launched brand new, completely overhauled ‘My Promos’ and ‘My Profile’ screens. These screens are used by every Haulix media contact to manage their promos and account. They are optimized for desktop and mobile devices.

As you can see in the screenshot below, when a contact views this screen, they have the ability to browse or search every promo sent to them through our system. By clicking menu options in the left column, they can filter results by Haulix customer or promos releasing in the next 30 days. Contacts can also hide promos they have already covered.

As a promo sender, you can control how your section of this page is arranged by using the public promo groups option found in your ‘Promos’ screen. Example in the screenshot, the customer groups his promos by record label.

You can find a complete breakdown of the new ‘My Promos’ screen and all it has to offer on our help site.

The ‘My Profile’ screen, which you can view below, has also been completely remodeled. Media contacts can use this screen to update their passcode and unsubscribe from promo senders.

These changes are the latest in a series of updates we have been working on in 2017. Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter for additional development updates, company news, and more.

What we have learned thus far in 2017

The end of June is upon us, which means we are already halfway through 2017. Can you believe it? We set high goals for ourselves this year, many of which we detailed in a length post that ran on this very blog back at the beginning of January. We promised we would be better, smarter company. We promised changes both big and small. We told everyone we knew that we would not let the setbacks of 2016 continue to make us afraid of change moving forward.

We are happy to report that we have stuck to our commitments and as a result have seen some growth in 2017. This growth falls in line with the growth our industry as a whole has experienced lately, but it is not something we ever take for granted. We have also – and perhaps far more importantly – succeeded in pleasing new and longtime clients through our development efforts. We have made good on promises that we may have let slip in the past, and through doing so improved our relationship with users.

If you told us we would be here back in December we might of told you it was all wishful thinking. We were never truly in dire straits, but after a platform relaunch failed spectacularly in the middle of August 2016 we tucked our tails between our legs and laid low. We did not talk about developing things further as much as we did better marketing what we had, what we knew worked and what we knew people wanted. “Why change?” We thought. “People like us just the way we are.”

Around the end of the year we had a change of heart. People may have liked us as we were, but we were not happy. We wanted a better platform, and we knew what needed to be done to get there. We could not afford to hire more development. We also could not afford to wait to pay the bills hanging over our heads of before making changes. If we wanted something done we had to do what we had always done, which meant doing it on our own.

Beginning in January we made lists of every update we felt our services needed. These items were pulled from conversations and emails with customers from the last five years, and we used the frequency they were requested to make a list of our top priorities. From there, we discussed the logistics of each update and tried to arrange them on a timeline that allowed us to make frequent updates throughout 2017 and beyond. We were no longer thinking about a single overhaul, but rather dozens of tiny updates spread out over time so that no one could ever feel as if the system they loved changed overnight.

We started small. The first few updates we made were not even noticeable to the average consumer, but the upgraded critical elements of our backend that we had been meaning to attend to for some time. Then we turned our vision to our site, our presentation, and even the layout of our help pages. We revisited every single page on our platform and made note of everything we knew could be better. We don’t have a final tally as to changes desired, but we know it to be in the dozens.

Most recently, our team began taking aim at the MyPromos and Profile pages. These elements of Haulix are some of the most important in our system. We don’t know when various elements of our planned changes will go into effect so we won’t detail too much right now, but do know changes will begin to appear in this section of our platform in early July.

It’s unclear if we have learned something new this year or if we just remembered what lead us to success in the first place. Haulix was never the result of hired gun developers coding a system they would never use or need. Haulix was built by members of the music industry for members of the music industry with security, ease of use, and customization in mind. Before last year we had done everything ourselves because we knew we could fulfill our dreams better than anyone could interpret them for us, but for some reason we lost our way. We tried to do something different that removed an element of authenticity from what we do. That might not be the sole cause of our relaunch failure, but it certainly contributed to it.

This year we have learned that we can – and should – do things ourselves. We have always promoted those who take it upon themselves to make a positive change in their lives because we know deep down that is the only true way to succeed. Maybe we forgot that at one point, or perhaps we thought we knew a better, more efficient way. Whatever the case, we know now we were wrong, and thankfully we are able to look back on this past year as a learning experience instead of something that nearly broke us.

Moving forward, every change and update made to Haulix will come through the work and input of the Haulix community. We are going to continue to serve our audience as we always have, making changes that fall in line with their needs, and we hope they continue to growth with us. For the first time in a year we can say the future truly looks bright, and we thank you for joining us on this journey.

How to get more streams on Haulix

One common complaint we receive from people accessing our promos is that certain releases come with a limited stream allotment. This number, which is set by the sender, restricts the listener to only hearing each track a certain number of times – typically 5 or less.

The reasons people set limits on streams are numerous. Some, for example, believe there is a lower likelihood of piracy if the material can only be accessed a finite amount of times. Others want to ensure an album is streamed strictly for professional purposes and not, for example, to entertain someone’s friends.

When you encounter a stream limit you should email the contact who sent you the promo directly and request additional streams. That person may or may not grant your request.

We (Haulix) cannot grant additional streams without permission from the sender.

3 Month Check-In

We have reached the end of March, which means 2017 is already one-fourth complete. Time moves fast.

2017 is the year of accountability and progress, so we are here to keep our end of the agreement we made way back in January.

The last three months have been a learning experience for the Haulix team. As we prepare for our next round of development we have been thinking a lot about the future of the music business and our evolving role within it. We have asked clients and users alike what they want from us, and so far a few themes have emerged:

Mobile. A lot of people access Haulix on the go, and we expect more will do the same in the years ahead. Perfecting mobile has been a priority for some time now, and we are constantly looking for ways to improve further.

Speed. Everyone wants everything as fast as possible, and we are no exception. We recently made improvements to download speeds for all promos, and our site has never been faster.

Security. We pride ourselves in having the most secure platform in the world of digital music promotion. Our team has had a number of discussions with Fraunhoffer, the team behind both the MP3 and watermark technology, about ways to advance our efforts in preventing leaks. Some positive outcomes have already surface, and we export more will come to pass in time.

Another big goal for our team in 2017 has been updating our messaging and marketing. So far we’ve completely altered our approach to advertising online and launched our company newsletter. Response to both changes have been positive.

This may make it sound like we’re finding a lot of success in 2017. While that is true, none of it would be possible without trial and error. We internal test countless variations of things we plan to do before making any decisions. Every ad we create comes at the cost of several dozen ideas we left on the cutting floor. Every platform development was chosen as a priority over other, similarly beneficial changes.

One week into 2017, where do you stand?

Can you believe we have already reached the first Friday in 2017? We may not technically be a full week into the year just yet, but businesses are back and life has more or less begun to return to normal.

Remember that passion you felt for the new year back at the end of November? We ran post after post encouraging you to make plans and set goals for the year ahead, but did you?

We told you we wanted to bring you into our journey this year and we want to be a part of yours. We will hold you accountable and you can do the same for us.

Here at HQ, this week was spent chatting with users about the changes they want to see from us in 2017. We maintain a running list of user suggestions, which we then prioritize based on demand and the timeframe needed for creation. We probably have about twenty-five ideas in front of us right now, and we are talking to our development team in hopes of solidifying an update timeline for the next few months.

Beyond these discussions we’ve also been pouring over data from the past year to better understand the ebb and flow of our industry. Traditionally speaking, the ‘busy season’ for album releases starts in early summer and remains steady through the end of October. December, January, and February are usually quiet, but this year we already have a number of large releases from notable artists being promoted through our system.

Next week, part of our team is headed to Los Angeles for a presentation at the inaugural IMI Music Conference. If you’re in the area and would like to attend tickets are still available online.

That’s where we at nearly six days into the new year, and we’re pretty happy with the progress being made. Where do you stand? Send us a tweet or respond below.
