How Music’s Biggest Names Reach Influencers And Press

There are countless ways to contact influential people, but only one affordable platform for music promotion is trusted by labels and artists worldwide.

The music business has undergone countless evolutions over the last century, but one thing that remains the same is the importance of relationships. Success is rarely a matter of who writes the best song or creates the best press kit. The talent that rises through the underground and becomes household names do so because of their ability to network. They put themselves out into the ether, making their talent and personality known, and they connect with like-minded individuals searching for an opportunity to build something that stands out from the competition.

There are no tricks or cheatsheets that can manufacture the power of honest relationships, and without them, there is no tool or advice we can offer that will make you a star. If you don’t have contacts yourself, hire someone that does, and make sure to check their credentials.

The biggest names in music understand that music promotion is a crowded field wherever everyone is essentially selling the same thing. They have songs, artwork, press photos, artist bios, and personality. You can package these items in a billion different ways. Still, the core elements are the same, and the influencers who shape culture wake every day to a seemingly endless number of requests for their limited attention.

What separates breakout stars from overlooked talent lies in how they present their material. Soundcloud, Dropbox, and Google Drive may make sharing content easy, but each service severely limits an artist’s ability to express themselves. Most Soundcloud landing pages, for example, include large branding and ads for Soundcloud services. Google Drive and Dropbox offer a more straightforward UI. However, the appearance is so bland that the only reason anyone would click on the links on said pages is because of a pre-existing familiarity with the material.

The best way to cut through the clutter and make a lasting impression on influencers is Haulix, the industry’s leading promotional distribution platform. Haulix makes it easy for professionals at every entertainment level to create eye-catching promotional emails and landing pages that emphasize an artist’s brand and music. BMG, Concord, Rise Records, Metal Blade Records, Pure Noise Records, and many other labels, independent artists, and publicists already trust Haulix. There are multiple affordable plans to choose from, and each comes with a one-month risk-free trial.

Haulix promos are great whether or not users choose to customize the default template. Each promo pages makes it easy to share the artist, album title, label, release date, cover art, record description, promo photos, music videos, and music. Here is one example of a promo with no customization:

If users do choose to customize their promo pages, great designs are just a few clicks away. Here is an album promo put together for You, Me, And Everyone We Know’s recent live album. As you can see, the page is customized to match the artwork’s colors, and a banner is present to emphasize the band’s branding.

Haulix also makes it easy to create engaging promo invitations that provide your contacts with unique links to your music. Each contact has a personal link, which allows you to track each person’s engagement with your music. You can view email opens, song streams, and downloads.

But the offerings don’t stop there! Haulix also has tools to generate reports, manage teams, and watermark your music. You can learn about all of this and more on the company’s website.

Production Begins on High Notes Season 2

Less than two months after the launch of season one, Haulix has an exciting announcement to share regarding the future of High Notes.

Haulix.com began production today, September 3, on the second season of its critically-acclaimed podcast, High Notes. The show, which explores addiction and recovery in the music business, is produced in partnership with heartsupport and The Global Recovery Initiatives Foundation. No release date was given, but the show is expected to return in December 2020.

“We believe that it’s time for the music industry to de-stigmatize addiction and mental health struggles,” host and series creator James Shotwell says. “We’ve lost too many people in music whose struggles with addiction were either ignored or downplayed for the sake of not making others uncomfortable. Our goal with this series is to help people take the first steps toward leading better, healthier lives, by bringing those topics to light using examples from the musicians they listen to.”

The first season of High Notes premiered on July 28. The eight-episode season featured Brian “Head” Welch of KoRn, Tommy Vext of Bad Wolves, Bert McCracken of The Used, Anthony Green of Circa Survive, Haley Butters of Absinthe Father, Nick Martin of Sleeping With Sirens, Ronnie Winter of The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, and Justin Furstenfeld of Blue October. Each episode delves into a different guest’s journey to sobriety and the role the music business played in helping (or hurting) their recovery.

“It’s hard to express how we feel about the response to season one,” Shotwell adds. “Rarely does a day go by without someone from some part of the world reaching out to share how the show has impacted their lives and given them hope. Our goal is continue to provide inspiration through season two, and we’re doing everything in our power to make these episodes great.”

Joining the High Notes team for season two is award-winning radio personality and industry veteran Laura Haggard, who will serve as a programming consultant for the series moving forward. Shotwell says, “Laura is very supportive of our work. She was present throughout production on season one, but we are excited to see her take on a more involved role with the new episodes. We couldn’t be more excited to have someone with her talent and ear for entertainment on board.”

High Notes released a special audio announcement to subscribers earlier today. Listen below:

Five Benefits of Campaign Scheduling

Haulix now allows users to schedule their promotional campaigns up to two weeks in advance, and there are many reasons to celebrate.

Promotional campaigns are the heart and soul of album rollouts. Everything, from the first single, to the final review, relies on good emails reaching the right tastemakers at the right moment in time. A poorly planned campaign can result in coverage opportunities being rushed or missed altogether, and in a market flooded with talent, there is no good reason to risk such a fate falling on your next release.

Haulix is built for promotion. Our customizable album promo screens enable artists and labels at every level to reinforce their brand and aesthetic while securing sharing their latest releases with tastemakers. In April, we took these efforts further by adding a scheduling feature that allows users to schedule their promotional campaigns up to two weeks in advance. You can try the system for yourself by signing up today on our official website.

But what are the benefits to scheduling your emails? That’s a good question:

Time zones

Tastemakers in New York City are usually up and working before the those on the West Coast. Tastemakers in London are eight hours ahead of Tastemakers in Chicago. Any influencer living in Australia is working sixteen-hours ahead of those living in Colorado. Confused? Us too.

Campaign scheduling empowers users to easily reach their contacts at the best times for those tastemakers. In a matter of minutes, a Haulix user can schedule campaigns for connections in different time zones.

Staggered Campaign Schedules

Not all tastemakers are the same, and they shouldn’t be treated as such. Instead of sending everyone a campaign at once, Haulix users schedule their campaigns to roll out based on the needs of their contacts and the preferences of their clients. High-priority contacts may get an album a month from release, but contacts with lower reach/importance may not be serviced an album until a week or two later.

Premieres

Great artists publicists know that the demand for access to the material they are promoting will spike immediately following a single release. If your new single is going to premiere at noon on a popular blog, then scheduling the advance to roll out to high-priority contacts a few minutes later can increase the likelihood of immediate engagement.

The problem is, the moments following a major premiere are hectic. Artists and publicists have to promote the release through their social media channels, monitor conversations, and engage with fans in real time. Campaign scheduling solves this problem, and even allows for creative subject lines to help further the narrative. For example, “Pup’s new single is out now, and here is the album!”

Campaign summaries

As an added bonus, the rollout of campaign scheduling also marked the debut of Haulix Campaign Summaries. Now, every campaign sent through Haulix generates a standalone activity page where users can view email engagement and promo engagement in a matter of clicks. Users are also empowered to easily send follow-up emails and direct links to their promos.

Look busy, even if you’re not

The music industry is a 24/7 business that does not care whether or not professionals have healthy personal lives beyond the office. Work comes first no matter what, but scheduling allows you to get ahead, if only long enough for a quiet lunch or a stroll around the block. Let’s face it: Everyone deserves a few minutes to relax, including you, but that doesn’t mean you campaigning has to stop. You just have to be more creative the competition!

Haulix Weekly Update #146: “Why was I programmed to feel pain?”

Hello, everyone. Thank you for finding a little time in your busy schedules to browse our blog and read up on the latest industry tips and tricks. We have been working hard to plan the remainder of our year, as well as what we will accomplish in 2017. It’s crazy to think 2016 is nearly over, right? No matter what comes in the weeks ahead we will remember this year as one riddled with great music, including this new release we cannot shake:

Each and every weekend we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

Development news:

This fall is going to be a relatively chill time for our development team. While there is a lot of work still to be done on the forthcoming platform overhaul we have scheduled for release in mid-2017 we are doing our best to not rush our work. If we have learned anything from the events of the last two months it is that pushing development to grind out products before they have been properly refined is a move that begs for complications. There are no shortcuts in the world of business, and there are certainly no shortcuts when it comes to ensuring the security and ease of access our platform is able to provide. Instead of forcing strict deadlines we are currently allowing our devs to rest and reconfigure their plan of attack for the new site. Once we have a plan in place we will move forward, but right now we are happy just exploring the options for growth you have made possible through your continued support.

Blog news:

As many of you probably noticed, our podcast was absent this week. We actually had two different guests scheduled, but both interviews had to be delayed due to circumstances beyond our control. We expect Inside Music to return to its regular day (Wednesday) in the coming week, and we are currently planning to release two episodes back-to-back in the near future in order to get back on track for the release of episode #100 this November.

In other blog news, our team has been churning out a number of articles as of late. The growing need to incorporate video into music blogs, the challenges of getting on the radar of music influencers, and more important topics were covered in the last week alone. If you missed anything as of late, especially our podcasts, please head over to our archive and catch up ASAP.

That’s all we have for this week. Tune in next week for a new job board, a very long podcast, and much more.

XOXOX

New Haulix Preview

Hello Everyone:

It’s been a year and a half in development and we are ready to launch the new version of our system!  Over the last few years, we have listened to your requests and this new version comes with quite a few new features and enhancements.

The launch will start Friday August 5 at 6PM CST and continue for the entire weekend.  We will be back up and running Monday morning August 8.

Monday, we will have customer support people available to answer questions or walk you through new features.

Promo Designs

Promos will be easier to customize. Upload a large background image and set a few colors and we’ll make everything come together and look professional.

Screens Fit Multiple Devices

Promos and almost all of the other system screens will be more responsive and adjust to fit desktop, mobile and tablet devices.

All press screens have been rebuilt, including their profile and ‘my promos’ screens.

Email Designer

All mailouts will be organized as campaigns. Send out promo invitations just like you do now AND press releases (NEW).

We built a drag and drop email designer that starts out as a blank canvas. You can add any combination of text or image blocks, upload images, re-use promo images already uploaded and change colors. You will have total control over how your emails look!

Campaign Statistics

All campaigns will have their own statistics pages.  We will track deliveries, opens, clicks (NEW), bounces and unsubscribes.

Promo invitations will have campaign specific statistics and global statistics across all campaigns.

This is just a small preview…  too much to include in one update!

Haulix Weekly Update #133: “You traded my soul for pogs?”

Hello, everyone! Welcome to another Haulix Weekly Update. Have you had a good week in the office? It has been unsurprisingly hot in Minneapolis, but our team has been making the best of it with long hours spend in cool offices plugging away at our next big release. We have a few important news items to share, but before we get there we wanted to show you this:

As I mentioned above, each and every weekend we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

Development updates:

We know you are anxious to see the new version of Haulix, and we’re incredibly excited to share it with you, but unfortunately the wait has just been extended a bit longer. Developing a game-changing platform is no easy task, and unfortunately this week we realized we needed a few extra days to ensure everything is as good as it can possibly be. Our plan is to have the updated platform out by the end of June, so please stay tuned!

Blog updates:

With all the planning and work being put into the next phase of product development we have admittedly put our blog efforts on the back burner a bit. That said, we are still churning out 5-10 original columns every week, including our podcast (Inside Music). We may not be hitting the same quantity we did three months back, but we believe the quality of what we create is better now than ever before. Don’t believe us? Head over to the archives and see for yourself.

That is all the news we have to share this week. Have a wonderful weekend and be sure to check back tomorrow for a brand new Job Board.

Best,

Team Haulix

Haulix Weekly Update #132: “Remember when I said I’d eat you last? I lied.”

Hello, everyone! We hope this update finds you staying cool as the summer temperatures begin to roll in. It is currently 93 degree in Minneapolis as we write this post, which for midwesterners like ourselves feels like the surface of the sun. Thankfully, there are a number of crazy good album releases arriving in stores today, and we’re going to try and keep our minds off the heat by enjoying those works. If you need a recommendation, check this out:

As I mentioned above, each and every weekend we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

Development updates:

We told you last week that we were finally prepping for the release of our long-awaited platform overhaul, and we are happy to report we are still on track to meet our desired deadline. We don’t want to jinx ourselves by putting an exact date out into the world just yet, but know that we are within 2 weeks of seeing our vision for the future of Haulix (and really – promotional distribution as a whole) realized. More news on that will appear on this blog in the days ahead.

Blog updates:

If you have been following our daily posts you’ll have no doubt recognized a lot of content being produced as of late. This is admittedly part of a two-fold plan. On one hand, we want to provide you with everything you need to navigate the modern music business. On the other hand, we know as we near the launch of the new Haulix we will not have time for content creation, so we’re shoveling out a lot of posts now to hold you over until we can return to business as usual. If you missed anything as of late, especially our podcasts, please head over to our archive and catch up ASAP.

That’s all we have for this week. Check back Sunday for an all-new music industry job board.

XOXO

Haulix Weekly Update #125: “200 channels, and nothing but cats.”

Hello, everyone! Thank you for finding a little time in your surely hectic lives to spend a few minutes browsing our company blog. Easter is this weekend, and we’re looking forward to spending some much needed time with family. Before we get there however, we want to share a little insight into everything happening right now at HQ, including this track which we have had on repeat all week long:

As I mentioned above, each and every weekend we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

WEEKEND SERVER WORK:

We will be doing a small server upgrade this weekend.  There will only be about 5-10 minutes of downtime, but we wanted to make you aware just in case you encountered any issues using our platform. As always you can tweet any questions or concerns you may have to @Haulix.

DEVELOPMENT NEWS:

Work continues on the long-awaited and long-teased Haulix remodel. We have more than 75% of the coding complete, and we expect to begin testing the updates as early as next week. Our goal is to have the revamped platform ready for release by the end of April, but we are not committing to a specific date at this time. As soon as we feel it’s as good as it can be it will be available to you.

BLOG NEWS:

You may have noticed there was no weekly update last week because our team was busy promoting Haulix in Texas at SXSW. We had a blast on the streets of Austin, and we used our experiences there to fuel the content we’ve created over the last week, including the release of 3 brand new podcast episodes. Head over to our Archives page to see everything you might have missed!

That is all the news and updates we have to share this week. Have a great holiday weekend and be sure to stop back on Sunday for a brand new job board.

Best,

Team Haulix

Haulix Weekly Update #102 – “Freedom! Horrible, horrible freedom!“

Hey there, everyone. Thank you for taking a few minutes to explore our blog. If you’re reading this post on the day it goes live then you are likely waiting for the weekend to arrive. We’re in the same boat as you, and to be honest we all have some wild plans for the days ahead. Before we get there however, we want to take a few minutes to reflect on all that has happened at HQ in recent days. We also wanted to share thing song with you, which a few of us plan to have on repeat all weekend long:

As I mentioned above, each and every weekend we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

DEVELOPMENT NEWS:

We actually have some news to reveal this week, though it is admittedly not the type of thing we are excited to share. Due to a few minor setbacks over the last week, we are now expecting our updated platform to be ready for public consumption during the last half of October. This means you might have to wait a week or two longer than originally anticipated, but I can assure you it’s worth it.

BLOG NEWS:

There is not a lot of news to share on the blog front. We have been busy planning the relaunch of Haulix, so most of our time outside of content creation has been dedicated to that. We are thrilled to finally have Inside Music back on a regular basis, and we appreciate those of you who continued to support and/or request the show during its absence.

Haulix Weekly Update #100 – “Don’t you even know dignity when you see it?”

Hello and welcome to the 100th Haulix Weekly Update. Can you believe it? We have spent over two years writing this blog, and every Friday for the majority of it we have had these recaps. It’s amazing we haven’t repeated a Simpsons quote yet, to be honest. I thought that shtick would die early on, but so many of you recognized the quotes we just kept using them. Why fix what isn’t broken, right?

As I mentioned above, each and every weekend we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

DEVELOPMENT NEWS:

Work on our impending relaunch continues, but at this point we have no new information to share on the development front.

That said, we have begun planning a series of online learning sessions to help introduce clients, as well as members of the press, to the new version of Haulix. Signups for these courses will begin in early September.

BLOG NEWS

The blog was very busy this week, but we don’t actually have many announcements to share. Our goal right now is to simply offer the best content we can while doing what we can to recruit new clients for Haulix. If you have yet to start your free 30-day trial of our promotional distribution platform and want to, please email james@haulix.com for details.

We have been messing around with more podcast stuff, but we’ll have more on that next week.
