Spotify now offers a playlist submission tool

Playlists are the new mixtapes.

Actually, that’s not entirely true. Very few people, if anyone, ever made good money off a mixtape. Playlist placement, however, can be life-changing. As more and more people turn to premium streaming services to access and discover music, curated playlists have become increasingly important in the overall ecosystem of the industry. Playlists can make people household names, and it can also encourage consumers to seek out “deep cuts” they may not have previously considered playing.

But how do you get on these lists? For the most part, the answer has long been to know the right people. If you know someone with a popular playlist or know someone who knows someone, then maybe — just maybe — you can get your song considered for inclusion. It’s a historically messy process with no clear path to results.

That is, until now.

Spotify’s new playlist submission feature aims to demystify the curation process for some of the world’s most popular playlists by creating a portal for consideration any artist can access. The new feature is part of its Spotify for Artists and Spotify Analytics tools, but it is still in beta and therefore not perfect.

If you’re an artist, label or manager with access to these tools, you’ll be able to choose one song to submit. That may seem strict, but the company tried to offer as much info as possible about the decision and tool with a recent statement:

“It’s important to give us as much information about the track as possible — genre, mood, and other data points all help us make decisions about where it may fit. You can note the instruments on it, whether it’s a cover, and the cultures you or the song belong to. The data you share will be complemented by what we already know about you — what else your fans listen to, what other playlists you’ve appeared on, etc. Editors will be searching through submissions based on the information you share to find unreleased music to consider for their playlists.”

Later in the release, Spotify notes that “as long as you tag and submit your track seven days in advance, the song you select will automatically appear in every one of your followers’ Release Radar playlists. This way you have control over which single you’re promoting to your fans.”

It’s unclear how well this last bit well function, especially for artists whose followers follow dozens of artists (or more), but the concept is definitely an alluring one. That power would allow artists to control the conversation around their music as it relates to discovery in a manner no other streaming service allows.

Music piracy more popular than ever, according to new report

Music piracy in 2017 rose 14.7 percent over that of 2016, with 73.9 billion visits to music piracy sites worldwide, according to piracy data insight tracker MUSO’s 2017 Global Piracy Report. The annual report measures piracy from over 30,000 of the highest traffic sites for all formats – including web streaming, download and torrenting.

The report also found there were 300.2 billion visits to piracy sites last year, up 1.6 percent from 2016 when accounting for each sector, and the United States is the leading perpetrator.

Billboard highlights the facts that the music category’s 73.9 billion visits, MUSO’s data separates sites into five different distinctions: web streaming sites (30.5 billion); web download sites (21.2 billion); streaming ripping sites (15.7 billion); public torrent sites (6 billion) and private torrent sites (500 million). Notably, music piracy is heavily skewed toward mobile users: 87.13 percent of those visits overall were accessed via mobile, compared to just 52 percent for TV piracy.

“There is a belief that the rise in popularity of on-demand services such as Netflix and Spotify have solved piracy, but that theory simply doesn’t stack up,“ MUSO co-founder/CEO Andy Chatterly said in a statement accompanying the report. “Our data suggests that piracy is more popular than ever.”

The findings of the MUSO report support other reports on piracy in recent years. If you recall, a report posted on this blog a little under two years ago cited the piracy in 2015 as being the worse of all-time. That report respected the total rate of piracy to double by 2020 and – at least based on this report from MUSO – that appears to be what will happen.

Another infamous leaker is going to prison

A California man has been sentenced to five years in prison for operating what prosecutors believe to be some of the most successful illegal music sharing sites in the world.

Artur Sargsyan, 30, owned and operated Sharebeast.com, AlbumJams, and other websites. Prosecutors say his file-sharing infrastructure allowed the illegal download of about a billion copyrighted musical works from at least 2012 through 2015.

Prosecutors say Sargsyan received more than one-hundred RIAA takedown requests for content hosted and promoted through his sites but chose to ignore the claims. Sargsyan pleaded guilty in September to criminal copyright infringement for private financial gain. In addition to the prison term, the judge ordered him to pay $458,200 in restitution and to forfeit nearly $185,000.

There was a period when the Haulix team would regularly catch pirates attempting to share leaked music through sites owned by Sargsyan. This story is further proof that MUSIC PIRACY DOES NOT PAY. In fact, it hurts everyone involved.

4 Ways to Improve Your Chances of Being Heard

Today it is both simpler and more difficult than ever before to be heard. On the one hand, music is now digital, which makes accessing millions of songs and albums incredibly simple no matter where you happen to be. At the same time, however, more artists are vying for the attention of music fans and professionals than at any other point in recorded history.

This is the ultimate catch-22 in the streaming age. Music is incredibly easy to access pretty much anywhere around the globe, but influencing people to listen to something they don’t already know is as hard – if not harder – than it was when you had to mail physical promotional copies of new releases to press, labels, etc.

Some artists may take comfort in knowing every other aspiring talent is facing this exact challenge, but if that is not enough to soothe your worried mind we have some advice that may help you get ahead of the competition:

Start by saying hello

You would not believe the number of artists who blindly send links to new/unreleased music to hundreds of industry professionals every single day without as much as an introductory email. These releases, by and large, go unheard. Industry professionals are always looking for the next big thing, but if an artist cannot be bothered to introduce themselves before seeking a deal/exposure, then many in the music business take that as a sign the artist may not be that professional after all. People prefer to work with people they know and believe in, so make yourself known and give them a reason to believe in you.

Never attach song files to an email

The average industry influencer receives well over 100 emails a day, and those working in artist discovery tend to receive countless more. As a result, inbox space is very limited. The only thing attaching song files to an email will accomplish is guaranteeing your letter has a one-way ticket to the recipient’s trash can.

Comparisons can be enticing

Artists like to believe they are the only person/group on the planet making the kind of music they create. While that may be true to an extent, there are undoubtedly some other, more popular artists who sound similar enough that people who enjoy those acts may enjoy what you — the new artist/group — has to offer. By using smart comparisons, you make it quicker for industry professionals to understand the type of music you’re creating and whether or not it may be something their audience/customers would want to experience.

Use a promotional distribution platform

There are numerous ways to send music to industry professionals. You can use file-sharing services or streaming platforms, but if you want to present your art in a way customized to reflect who you are as creator, then you need a company a promotional distribution service.

Haulix offers a secure way to share streams and downloads of your latest release through email invitations and promotional web pages customized to reflect your talent. Not only will you be sharing your music using a service that is recognized and praised throughout the industry, but you will be doing so in a way that places the focus squarely on your talent. Your promotional page will have no third party ads and minimal Haulix branding. You can add cover art, background images, embedded videos, tour dates, bios, and more – all while ensuring your music will be protected from piracy with Haulix’s unique watermarking system.

Haulix FAQ: What is a passcode?

Why you need a promotional distribution platform

With the ease of access to recording equipment and the internet, it is now easier than ever for anyone who possesses an interest in music to market themselves as a musician. Click on almost any tag on a streaming service like Soundcloud or Audiomack and you will find page after page of aspiring stars from all walks of life. Technology has lowered the bar for what it takes to be a musician to the ground floor, and as a result, the fight for attention of any kind is harder than ever.

There are many approaches to getting heard, but one time-tested strategy of the digital age is to first appeal to the influential bloggers and digital voices whose opinion on new music will reach consumers your boosted Facebook posts can only dream of. Algorithms may create great playlists, but the digital age has yet to produce a better platform for discovering artists than trusted sources with a vast knowledge of music most consumers simply do not have the time to research or enjoy.

You need the press and the press, as crazy as it may sound, needs you. Music writers are ALWAYS on the lookout for the next song that will change their lives so that they can then change the lives of their audience (who, in turn, become your audience).

You also need to protect your music, which is why services like Haulix exist to make promoting your new and unreleased songs to the entertainment industry at large a simple and secure process. Haulix makes it easy to send unique, watermarked links to your new and unreleased music to everyone on your press list in a matter of minutes. You can even customize the email invitation and the streaming page itself to better reflect your personal brand.

But why do you need a unique link for every writers and industry professional when a private Soundcloud link has worked for so many others in the past? While it’s true Soundcloud makes it possible to hide streams from the general public, there is a myriad of ways people can still access and download your music. If that happens and your music winds up leaking you will have no way to uncover who

is responsible for the leak. Someone you never intended your unreleased music to reach may have gained access through a writer you thought you could trust and within minutes your hard work could be available, for free, in perpetuity.

By using Haulix you can send as many links as you need, all at once, in the same amount of time it would take for you to generate and distribute an insecure streaming link. If anything happens we will help you find the person responsible and do what we are able to ensure they never leak music again.

3 ways independent artists use Haulix

Getting the attention of the media as an independent artist in 2017 can be incredibly difficult. Getting the attention of a management company, record label, or booking agent may be even harder. We at Haulix have not yet discovered a secret path to success in this business, but we have developed a popular platform for promotion that saves both time and money without risking the security of unreleased music.

Many people believe Haulix is a platform intended for publicists and record labels, but over the last eight years we have also helped hundreds of independent artists and groups from all over the world further their careers through use of our platform. Here are just three example of how we make it possible for up and coming talent to raise their industry profile:

Press Coverage

There are dozens of promotional distribution platforms in existence, but none have received more recommendations from members of the media than Haulix. Journalists and radio personalities alike use our service every day to stream, download, and discover the next big record. Our promo tools make it easy for anyone to upload music and share it with the industry at large using a fully customizable template in a matter of minutes. Just take a look at these recent promos:

Custom EPK

Not long ago, artists hoping to secure a record deal, manager, or booking agent would have to physically mail their contacts a package containing information about their music. These packages often included a bio, music, photos, tour information, and all sorts of artist-related branding. Artists would pour effort into these packages, which in turn left them with less time to focus on their craft.

With Haulix, independent artists can recreate the EPK experience using our fully customizable promos and email invitations. Our platform has zero third party advertising, meaning your music and branding is all anyone will see. Use this to your advantage and create messaging that not only tells your story, but showcases where you plan to go in the future as well.

Fight piracy

Music pirates are worse than ever in 2017. In fact, studies have shown that music piracy has more than doubled in the last ten years, and it is expected to double once more by 2020. With Haulix, independent artists can watermark their new and unreleased music. This video explains how the process works:

If you have yet to sign up for your free month of Haulix, what are you waiting for?! Pick a plan that suits your needs and get started using the global leader in digital promotional distribution. If you have any questions, email help@haulix.com and someone will assist you within an hour or less.
