The near-mythical power of cutting yourself some slack

Time. It’s the one thing we all want that is always fleeting and impossible to replenish. The luckiest among us realize the value of time in their teen years, but most don’t appreciate it’s true nature until some great loss occurs in the mid to late twenties. Whatever the case may be for you, it’s likely you feel your time to quote/unquote ‘make it’ in music is constantly slipping through your fingers. Every day it seems there is a new, younger hitmaker finding success. That yodeling kid from Wal-Mart went from viral fame to releasing a (really freaking good) hit single distributed by a major label in under a month — all before he’s old enough to take a driver’s education course.

Here’s the thing you have to remember: You don’t have to find success at a young age to become successful in life. There are no age restrictions on happiness. The digital age has presented new opportunities for overnight success, as has reality television, but that kind of exposure the associated success comes from chance, and you cannot rely on luck to get you through this life. At the risk of sounding pessimistic, it just doesn’t make sense. The universe cares not for your flights of fancy and the things you wish you were, nor will it ever bend over backward to assist you in the day to day struggles of being a functional human being.

So, if viral success isn’t the ideal path, then the only one that remains is the same one traveled by every person working in music today. Success in this industry is, by and large, earned through years of handwork and dedication to your craft. It’s the result of treating others well and always doing your part, regardless of whether or not others did the same. Success, for lack of a better description, is the sum of everything you’ve done over the entirety of your time in music.

With this in mind, you may think you need to work harder than ever. We’ve been conditioned to believe that any waking hour not spent working on something that helps us inch closer to our goals is time wasted. After all, someone somewhere is no doubt chasing the same dream as you or I and they’re probably working on something incredible, right? That’s what my brain tells me.

The fact of the matter is that whether you pull an all-nighter tomorrow or not isn’t nearly as important as your longterm commitment to this field. Success in music, especially the kind of success that leads to a legitimate career (with benefits, etc.), takes time. There is no way around it. There is also no rush because there is no endpoint. There will never be a day when you reach a professional peak, and the sky suddenly disappears. There will always be another thing to make, pitch, sell, or whatever it is you wish to do with your life. Always.

Do not be afraid to rest. Take the night off if you need it. Heck, unless you’re getting paid to do something feel free to take as much time as you need whenever you need it. Those who are indeed called to this industry can never stay away for long, and in time you’ll feel that passion you’ve been searching for return. This journey we are on lasts a lifetime if you want it to, but you have to take care of yourself. No one else can do that for you.

Who reads your music blog?

Search the name of virtually any artist or group on social media, and you are bound to find people discussing that act. Opinions on music are a dime a dozen, and when it comes to bands, everyone already knows their value is even less. Still, young music writers around the globe cut corners on a daily basis to be among the first to cover the latest news about the biggest acts in their area of interest. It doesn’t matter if their site has few to no visitors or if much larger publications beat them to the punch, they want to ensure that their readers learn the latest breaking news directly from them.

But who is the audience for the average blog, and who visits websites for news before scrolling social media?

Music publications, especially those lacking funding, rarely build their audience through coverage of talent that is covered by every other zine, blog, or Twitter feed in the world. Music publications gain readers by delivering the stories no one else can. They earn trust through curating a profoundly entertaining and highly engaging conversation around music that they believe deserves recognition.

Covering everything that is popular in music will satisfy people, but it won’t captivate them. If you want people to continue coming back, you need to seek out the stories no one is telling about the musicians that everyone will want to know six months from now. Your job is to hook people with music made by others. There is a finite amount of people who read music sites, and the vast majority are using the same hook to lure readers. Why do that when you can stand out? Why offer what everyone else offers when you can be the alternative?

When you align yourself with artists on the rise, you align yourself with dreamers, and that is – in many ways – your audience. You want people who listen to music and dream of lives not yet lead. You want to provide the soundtrack to their next great escape, and you want to tell them why it’s going to change their lives before they even realize what is happening to them. You want to be a source of discovery, not regurgitation, which continually introduces new sounds and ideas into someone’s life. If you can accomplish one or both of those things, you can make a reader for life. Better yet, you’ll create an ambassador for your work that helps carry word of your writing to places you’ve yet to reach.

So, who reads music blogs? People just like you. People who think the radio is dead and the music they hear everyone else enjoying is stupid, dull, or just plain awful. Be yourself and readers will find you. Do what everyone else is doing, and they will pass you by in search of a more authentic voice.

Ask yourself: What does my audience want?

I’ve been emailing with a few up and coming artists about their summer and fall plans. In every exchange, I make it a point to ask artists what they’d like to be doing in the three months, six months, and one year from the end of our conversation. I don’t expect a detailed answer, but whenever someone tells me their goals without mentioning their audience, I get worried.

There are a limitless number of paths to success in life and music, but if you are thinking about the future without first considering the demands of your audience, you are a blind captain steering a lost ship. We live in the age of on-demand entertainment for every taste, meaning there is always something to meet the needs of consumers. To build the following you need to make a career out of music, you need to be taking the demands of your audience into account.

Is there enough demand to support a tour through the midwest? What should our setlist be? Should we continue pursuing this new sound? What kind of merchandise should we be printing? If we were to sign with a label, what label rosters would be a good fit for us?

All of these questions are important decisions, and they should not be made without considering what you audiences wants/expects from you.

Social media has made gauging your audience’s interest easier than ever before. On Twitter, for example, you can run custom polls asking your audience to weigh in on virtually anything.

You don’t have to do what your audience demands. Your music is an expression of yourself, and only you can determine what that means for your craft. If you need to make a bold change, do so with confidence. Your audience will believe in you as long as you believe in yourself.

That said, where business is concerned, the smart plays are always in listening to those still invested in your product. The people who love your music have heard it and talked about it as much – if not more – than you have, and they know a thing or two about it. Listen to them.

Making the most of an idea

Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler recently appeared on Joe Rogan’s popular podcast to promote a new documentary. During the conversation, Tyler began to describe the early days of Aerosmith, and how guitarist Joe Perry would sit around at night playing whatever came to his mind on guitar. Tyler recognized the potential for the material and soon purchased a cassette recorder to capture the ideas as they made themselves known.

“That’s where we got some of our biggest songs,” he told Rogan. “But just think about the material we never got on tape. The ideas we never got to explore.”

Think about that for a second. For nearly half a century now, Aerosmith has been considered one of the biggest and most influential groups of all-time, yet the members cannot help thinking about what could have been. There is a fire in their gut that years to discover the next song, the next chord progression, the next melody, the next whatever it is that leads them to something new. For Aerosmith, success is secondary to feeling fulfilled creatively, and even decades worth of work cannot quench their thirst for whatever comes next.

If all of Aerosmith’s accomplishments have been unable to replace their desire to create it is probably safe to assume the same would apply to you. The journey of creativity is not one where the goal is the destination because there is no end. To create is to embark on one adventure after another with little to no idea where things will end up. It’s about taking chances and accepting the outcome, whether good or bad, as something that will not stop you from continuing your work.

With this in mind, take a moment to think about your development process. Are you pulling out the metaphorical tape recorder to capture all your ideas as soon as they come into your head, or are you allowing potentially great thoughts to be lost in the ether of life just as quickly as they were discovered? Do you pursue your ideas until they are fully realized, or do you play with them until the next best thing comes along? If so, why?

Ask any creative and they will tell you that they hate when being creative feels like work. Ask any creative who has made a career out of their creativity, and they will tell you it’s always been work. You have to put in the work to get the most out of your ideas, and that begins by not letting them slip through your fingers in a fit of spontaneous creation. You don’t have to save everything because not all things you think up will be great, but you should see them through long enough to know whether or not you’re onto something potentially massive. Refining those senses takes time, but it’s worth the effort.

Don’t let great ideas go to waste. Take notes. Record your thoughts. Do whatever you need to do to ensure those moments of brilliance that strike like lightning coursing through your veins are not gone just as soon as they arrive. Wring every ounce of possibility out of each idea and, in time, you will find yourself creating things that change the world.

Nine Inch Nails is trolling the ticketing industry (and you should too)

You have to love Trent Reznor. Thirty years into his career as Nine Inch Nails the iconic frontman continues to find new ways to subvert the norm. This time, his rebellious actions come in the form of a (much-needed) jab at the modern ticketing industry. Before being released online, tickets for Nine Inch Nails’ upcoming US tour will only be available at select ticket booths across the country. You can read a brief explanation from the band below:

WHAT?  WHY?  PHYSICAL WORLD PRESALE?

THE PROMISE OF A WORLD MADE BETTER BY COMPUTERS AND ONLINE CONNECTIVITY HAS FAILED US IN MANY WAYS, PARTICULARLY WHEN IT COMES TO TICKETING.  EVERYTHING ABOUT THE PROCESS SUCKS AND EVERYONE LOSES EXCEPT THE RESELLER. WE’VE DECIDED TO TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT THAT WILL ALSO LIKELY SUCK, BUT IN A DIFFERENT WAY.  WE’RE HOPING MANY OF YOU WILL BE HAPPY WITH THE RESULTS, WHILE SOME MAY DO WHAT THEY ALWAYS DO AND BITCH ABOUT IT.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS:

YOU (AN ACTUAL HUMAN BEING) SHOW UP AT THE BOX OFFICE, INTERACT WITH THE TICKET SELLER (ANOTHER ACTUAL HUMAN BEING) AND PURCHASE UP TO FOUR TICKETS THAT WILL ACTUALLY BE HANDED TO YOU ON THE SPOT.  THE TICKETS WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE ONLINE OR ANYWHERE ELSE BEFORE OR DURING THAT DAY.  ALL SEATS (INCLUDING THE BEST SEATS) WILL BE AVAILABLE FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE.  YOU MAY ACTUALLY ENCOUNTER OTHER ACTUAL HUMAN BEINGS WITH SIMILAR INTERESTS LIKELY WEARING BLACK CLOTHING DURING THE PROCESS AND POTENTIALLY INTERACT WITH THEM.  THE EXPERIENCE HAS THE POTENTIAL* TO BE ENJOYABLE.  NINE INCH NAILS HAS ALWAYS BEEN ABOUT BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER, LIVING LIFE TO THE FULLEST AND GOOD TIMES.**

ANY REMAINING TICKETS WILL BE SOLD AT A LATER DATE.

*NOT GUARANTEED

**NOT ENTIRELY TRUE

Fans of music worldwide know the pains of ticket purchasing being referred to above. Knowing the day and time tickets go on sale is no longer enough, nor is it any guarantee you will even be able to purchase them when they’re officially available to the public. Most tours now have presales, and more prominent artists can have several presales that are exclusive to fan clubs or corporations (American Express, Spotify, etc.). Then you have the resurgence of VIP seating, which makes the seats closest to the performers out of reach for man, as well as Platinum Seats, ticketing bots, fees, and a ruthless secondary market that is growing by the week.

In short, ticketing is complicated and expensive. Furthermore, the increased competition for seats has only served to drive a wedge between fans. Concerts are no longer a communal experience, but a challenge to see who can find the quickest way to claim a desirable seat.

You also never see or interact with other fans until the night of, which limits the amount of interaction you’re likely to have with other concertgoers. That may not seem like a big deal, but that is likely because you do not recall any different experience. Previous generations literally camped outside venues for days, even weeks to get tickets. They recognized their shared fandom, and as a result, they found a deeper meaning in the live experience. They were less alone.

Nine Inch Nails’ new campaign may not kickstart a full-on ticketing revolution, but it should renew interest in the conversation around how tickets are acquired. The process of making tickets available to everyone reasonably is a complicated one, but it is necessary one all the same. The current ticketing market pits consumers against one another for the benefit of corporations. Change is needed, but it won’t come easy.  If you have ideas, share them with us on Twitter.

Tips for photographing Warped Tour

Vans Warped Tour, the summer camp of punk rock. Every year many people get their start shooting shows by covering Warped Tour. I didn’t get my start shooting Warped, but covering it did prepare me for how to handle shooting an all-day music festival in the scorching heat without water. It’s an experience unlike any other and sort of a right of passage for music photographers, especially for those in the punk/alternative field. I’ve decided that not doing a tutorial guide on how to shoot warped tour would be irresponsible, so here are some of my tips (I know Todd Owyoung has a great article on the same thing and I purposely haven’t read to avoid any plagiarism).

Gear (Technical and Professional):

You can shoot warped tour with almost anybody and any glass. You’re shooting outside, and your equipment doesn’t need to be top notch. Afraid of using your kit lens because of its aperture limitations? Bust it out! You’re shooting in daylight!

Remember to bring extra cards, and batteries. It’s an all-day event. Sometimes we all need a reminder to bring extra cards and batteries.

Warped tour is an all-day event. Make sure you have sunscreen, comfortable sneakers, and appropriate clothing. And please wear deodorant, your pits will smell at the end of the day when you’re shooting verticals

Check out smaller bands:

The reason for this is simple – the little bands are the ones that are going to get big next year. Imagine having photos of Katy Perry from that one summer she spent sweating it out with the best punk had to offer on Warped Tour. I wish I did!

Last, but not least, be creative.

If you shoot vigorously like I do, then you can shoot 10+ bands at Warped. Do something different. Yeah, that jump shot is great, but the only way to separate warped photos from you and every other person shooting Warped is to be creative and different.
