Happy Holidays from Haulix!

It’s that time of year again. Regardless of your beliefs or chosen celebrations, December has a way of bringing people together. It is when we reconnect with the most essential thing in life, those we love and the people who love us, all while (hopefully) shutting out the chaotic world around us. It is when we catch our breath, rest, and prepare for the next twelve months ahead.

We wanted to take a moment before heading out to thank each and every one of you for continuing to support our company. Haulix was launched with the goal of creating a secure, cost-effective way for artists and their representatives to discreetly share music. We take pride in achieving that goal, but we celebrate the fact we’ve become something much more over time. We’ve helped artists find management, get record deals, and create albums that changed the way people think. We’ve also engaged with several generations of music professionals and aspiring minds alike, all of whom have helped us better understand this ever-changing business.

Moving forward, our goals remain the same. We want to create the best software possible. We also want to help educate and develop the next wave of music professionals so that they might make this business their own.

None of this is possible without your support and friendship. So again, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you. We cannot wait to continue working together in the new year.

Music piracy more popular than ever, according to new report

Music piracy in 2017 rose 14.7 percent over that of 2016, with 73.9 billion visits to music piracy sites worldwide, according to piracy data insight tracker MUSO’s 2017 Global Piracy Report. The annual report measures piracy from over 30,000 of the highest traffic sites for all formats – including web streaming, download and torrenting.

The report also found there were 300.2 billion visits to piracy sites last year, up 1.6 percent from 2016 when accounting for each sector, and the United States is the leading perpetrator.

Billboard highlights the facts that the music category’s 73.9 billion visits, MUSO’s data separates sites into five different distinctions: web streaming sites (30.5 billion); web download sites (21.2 billion); streaming ripping sites (15.7 billion); public torrent sites (6 billion) and private torrent sites (500 million). Notably, music piracy is heavily skewed toward mobile users: 87.13 percent of those visits overall were accessed via mobile, compared to just 52 percent for TV piracy.

“There is a belief that the rise in popularity of on-demand services such as Netflix and Spotify have solved piracy, but that theory simply doesn’t stack up,“ MUSO co-founder/CEO Andy Chatterly said in a statement accompanying the report. “Our data suggests that piracy is more popular than ever.”

The findings of the MUSO report support other reports on piracy in recent years. If you recall, a report posted on this blog a little under two years ago cited the piracy in 2015 as being the worse of all-time. That report respected the total rate of piracy to double by 2020 and – at least based on this report from MUSO – that appears to be what will happen.

Introducing our new ‘My Promos’ screen

If you’re a member of the media who has logged onto Haulix today you may have noticed a few major changes to our platform. On Saturday afternoon our team rolled out a completely overhauled version of our MyPromos and Profile screens. These updates changed the look and feel of these pages, as well as the overall speed of our platform. Here’s a quick breakdown of everything new:

1. All your promos are now organized by sender. Click on any sender from the left column and the promos available to you from them will appear on the screen.

2. If the sender has organized their promos by a specific label/genre/etc. that categorization will appear to you as well.

3. If you hide any promo(s) those records will be sorted into a new ‘Hidden Promos’ category that will appear on the left side of the page. It looks like this:

In the weeks and months ahead we will be adding additional functionality to this page, including the ability to view all the albums you’ve sent that are scheduled to be released within the next month.

If you have any questions about this update, or if you have a suggestion for a future Haulix change, please email help@haulix.com and our team will respond as soon as we are able.

We are more than 10% through 2017, so where do you (and we) stand?

Believe it or not, 2017 is already 12.5% complete.

We are a little over a month and a half into the year, which seems like as good a time as any to check-in on the goals we have set for ourselves. If you recall, we started this year by asking readers to set goals and work towards bettering themselves through simple, incremental changes to their daily routine. We also set some goals for ourselves.

So, where do you stand? Have you made any progress toward becoming the person, professional, group, company, etc. you aspire to be? Do you lay awake at night and continue to tell yourself that tomorrow will be different? If so, why?

For our part, change has been admittedly slow. A big goal of ours for 2017 is to expand our customer base while quietly working to develop the next version of our platform. We recently launched a bi-weekly newsletter to help these efforts, which you can sign up for here. We also brought back our podcast following a brief holiday hiatus, and we expanded the number of potential new clients we approach week to week. Some things we have done better than others, but engagement is up and we hope to see conversion follow.

I will say, and this is not a cop-out, that the music business is traditionally slow right now. There are not a lot of big releases in the immediate future, so there is not as much interest in promotional distribution as there tends to be closer to summer or in early fall. We see the ebb and flow of traffic repeat year over year, but we refuse to let that trend deter us from growing our customer base.

But what about you?

If you’re anything like us, then you probably have at least a few to-do items that you have managed to avoid until now. Maybe they are simply things that require more emotional effort than you’re prepared for, or perhaps they are something small that will inevitably lead to a much bigger commitment (such as healthy eating or fitness).

Whatever the case may be, just know it is not to late to start the next journey that will change your life. We try to approach business and life with fresh eyes and open minds every day. We take calculated risks and plan for the distant future at the same time. We, like you, are making it up as we go and doing the best we can in the meantime. That’s life.

Make this week the one where you finally get going. Take the first step, just one, and you will discover how easy the second will be. The third will follow, and so on.

One month into 2017, where do you stand?

January does not officially end until next Tuesday, but this Friday marks the end of the last full week in the first month of 2017. To say the last several weeks have been busy for us would be an understatement, but what about you?

If you recall, we told you at the beginning of the month that this year was one of progress and accountability. We’re going to keep you in check and we have asked you to do the same of us. Some of you have even gone so far as to email or tweet at us regarding promised updates. For that, we thank you.

Our month has been spent planning not only the rest of 2017, but also where we want to go in 2018. We have been doing a lot of research into how the industry has evolved in recent years in hopes of better understanding where things are headed. Our prime reason for existing has always been to fill the need people have for secure way to share unreleased music, but will that always be a need people have? There is no way to know the answer, but we can guess from past trends that things are going to continue evolving and we need to be aware of how those changes impact the industry’s needs. If we can predict that, which is a big if, then we can stay ahead of the game.

But what about you? Some of you have told us about albums you hope to record and companies you hope to launch, but how far have you actually gotten toward achieving those goals? If you are still dragging your feet at the starting line, it’s okay. Be honest with yourself about your progress, or lack thereof, and ask yourself what simple steps you can take to accomplish more in the month ahead than you have in recent weeks.

There is a lot of 2017 left, but unless you make changes now you are going to struggle to achieve your goals in a timely manner. If you need help, just ask. We are always here for you.

Haulix Weekly Update #144: “Look, just give me some inner peace or I’ll mop the floor with ya!”

Hello, everyone! There are grey skies hanging over Minneapolis today, and because of this the temperature has fallen from the mid-70s to somewhere in the mid-60s. We consider this a blessing of sorts, as our entire team lives for Fall weather. The leaves are changing, cider mills are popping up, and a wealth of fantastic releases are beginning to trickle into record stores across the nation. One of our favorite albums of the year arrived in stores this morning, and to celebrate we thought we’d share a video for one of the album cuts we are currently obsessing over:

Each and every weekend we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

Development news:

If you look closely at the Haulix website you will notice a few cosmetic/aesthetic changes occurring in the weeks ahead. While we do not have any plans to bring the updated platform to the public before 2017 we are actively working to improve the way our platform looks and feels, especially for those who may have never interacted with our brand before. If you like what you see, feel free to tell us. If you hate what you see, please tell us so we can make any necessary changes.

Blog news:

With our platform overhaul taking a breather for the remainder of the year you can expect to see a lot of content and change coming to our blog. You may have noticed a new layout this week, but we are not ready to say this is the look we are sticking with for the foreseeable future. Like with our company website, we want this blog to more accurately reflect the quality product and services we offer industry professionals around the globe. That said, we are not going to stop publishing content 6 days a week or recording new episodes of our podcast. In fact, we are actually quite proud of everything we have going on right now.  If you missed anything as of late, especially our podcasts, please head over to our archive and catch up ASAP.

That’s all we have for this week. Tune in next week for a new job board, a very long podcast, and much more.

XOXOX

Haulix Weekly Update #142: “You will be called…Stitchface”

Hello, everyone! Welcome to the first weekend of September and one of the last true holiday weekends of 2016. Our entire staff is itching to get our and enjoy the final hours of summer, but there is still a lot of work to do in order to be the best service we can possibly be. We know all you hard worker know what we mean, and to celebrate our mutual dedication to success we wanted to share this song that we’ve had on repeat all week long:

Each and every weekend we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

Development news:

After much consideration and recalibration we have come to the conclusion that new version of Haulix will remain offline for the foreseeable future. Our goal is to retool the updated platform, making changes based on clients’ suggestions as we are able, and then reintroduce the overhauled UI sometime in the latter half of 2017. We know that is long time from now, but this industry moves fast. Before you know it we will be celebrating the new year, and not long after that we will begin teasing the changes we have planned. For now, we thank you for your patience and support. Haulix is what it is because of you.

Blog news:

As you may have noticed, our blog has recently found a renewed sense of purpose. Our return to the Blogger Spotlight series has provided a wealth of new readers, as well as pitches from up and coming sites looking to be featured. We hope to get to everyone in time, but we do ask that those awaiting a response be patient. We have SO MUCH good stuff on the horizon, and we just need a little time to get on top of everything. If you missed anything as of late, especially our podcasts, please head over to our archive and catch up ASAP.

That’s all we have for this week.

Check back here on Sunday for an all-new music industry job board.

XOXO

Haulix Weekly Update #134: “Scanning for sarcasm…”

Hello, everyone! It’s the beginning of July and things are really starting to heat up at Haulix HQ. Everything we have been working towards for the better part of a year is so close to being ready for public consumption that we can hardly contain our excitement. That said, there is still a lot of work to be done, and we’ll most likely spend a good portion of our holiday weekend grinding away at our computers. It’s worth it though, because we know you’re going to love what we have in store. For now, watch this:

As I mentioned above, each and every weekend we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

Development news:

We know we have spent the last few months promising the June launch of our completely overhauled platform, but unfortunately that is a promise we have to break. It’s now July, and we are still a couple weeks away from being entirely satisfied with the latest version of Haulix. Most of the coding work is done, but we have a lot of testing and Q/A work to do before we will feel confident in sharing our latest creation with the world. That said, we have made several screenshots of the new platform available online, and we are continuing to add new images on a regular basis. Click here to catch a glimpse of the future.

Blog news:

If you have been following our daily posts you’ll have no doubt recognized a lot of content being produced as of late. This is admittedly part of a two-fold plan. On one hand, we want to provide you with everything you need to navigate the modern music business. On the other hand, we know as we near the launch of the new Haulix we will not have time for content creation, so we’re shoveling out a lot of posts now to hold you over until we can return to business as usual. If you missed anything as of late, especially our podcasts, please head over to our archive and catch up ASAP.

That’s all we have for this week. Check back Sunday for an all-new music industry job board.

XOXO

Haulix Weekly Update #131: “This better be about pizza”

Hello, everyone! We’re a day late posting this update, but rest assured that all is well at Haulix HQ. We have some big changes on the horizon, and starting with this post we are going to reveal some of what lies in store. Before we get there however, we would like to begin this recap with a song we have had on repeat all week long. Check this out:

As I mentioned above, each and every weekend we like to take a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming to update and reflect on everything happening at Haulix HQ. We are far more than a music blog, as many of you already know, and posts like this give us an opportunity to share more our efforts with all of you.

Development news:

The long-teased Haulix platform update is so close. In fact, by the end of this month we will all be enjoying what we have dubbed ‘Project Falcon’ in full. We don’t want to give away the exact launch date just yet, but know it’s coming much sooner than you think.

Blog news:

Activity on the blog was up this week, but content creation is still taking a back seat to work on the new platform. We are quite proud of the material shared as of late, so please take a few moments to experience everything we have prepared for you. The best way to do that, at least in our opinion, is by scrolling through our archives. Enjoy.

That is all the news we have to share this week. Have a safe and productive weekend. We will see you back here on Sunday for a brand new job board.

Best,

Haulix
